LONDON.- In London this June, Sotheby's will offer for sale a magnificent and encompassing assembly of Post-war & Contemporary art. Headlining the auction, Francis Bacon?s Study for Self-Portrait is the penultimate self-portrayal in the artist's pivotal corpus of intimately scaled portrait heads. Executed in 1980, this deeply reflective painting delivers a remarkable exemplification of the principle engagement of Francis Bacon?s oeuvre: the Self-Portrait. This work is accompanied by an extraordinary group of paintings by Frank Auerbach. Dedicated to portraying the likeness of Ruth Bromberg, these magnificent eight paintings span the entire seventeen years of Ruth?s stalwart dedication as a sitter. Striking an intriguing parity to these works is Glenn Brown?s pivotal Atom Age Vampire from 1991. Appropriating yet flattening Auerbach?s signature impasto ... More

Hyde Collection opens concurrent exhibitions featuring the work by Stephen Knapp and Tiffany Studios   Celebrating its 25th anniversary, 20/21 British Art Fair will take place from 12-16 September   Museum Tinguely dedicates exhibition to one of the most important figures of the Russian Avant-garde

Stephen Knapp, Studio Assemby.

GLENS FALLS, NY.- Stephen Knapp has been creating art for over thirty years that interacts with, and is transformed by light. Combining art and science Knapp creates innovative and engaging works that are formed at the intersection of painting, sculpture, and architecture. Dispensing with traditional media and narrative content, Knapp’s “lightpaintings,” a word he coined to describe his light-based installations, are both innovative and invigorating: transposing artistic tradition into the hyper-stimulated world of the twenty–first century. He creates his lightpaintings using a special glass treated with layers of metallic coatings that act as a selective prism to separate focused light into different wavelengths of the color spectrum. Knapp cuts, shapes, and polishes the glass in his studio to create a palette that he uses to refract and reflect light onto a surface and surrounding space. The artist’s unique ability to harness the power of light represe ... More

LONDON.- The 20/21 British Art Fair, the only Fair which specialises exclusively in Modern British art, will take place from 12 – 16 September at the Royal College of Art, Kensington Gore, London. This year is a landmark year as the fair is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Founded in 1988 as The 20th Century British Art Fair (it became the 20/21 British Art Fair in 2000) at the Cumberland Hotel, it moved to the Royal College of Art, arguably ‘the spiritual home of British art’, in 1991. At that time Modern British art, with the exception of Moore, Bacon, Freud and Nicholson, was much undervalued and needed a flagship. Having survived the depths of the recession in the early 90’s, the Fair thrived but few people could have foreseen the meteoric rise of interest in art which has occurred since then. Attitudes to buying have also changed dramatically; whereas in the late 1980‘s, it w ... More

BASEL.- This year the Museum Tinguely in Basel is dedicating its large summer exhibition to one of the most important figures of the Russian avantgarde: Vladimir Tatlin (1885–1953). It is now almost twenty years since the last comprehensive retrospective to be devoted to this radically innovative artist. The presented works will include early paintings, counter-reliefs that reach out into the surrounding space, reconstructions of his revolutionary tower, and the flying machine Letatlin. The exhibition is rounded off with examples of his work for the theatre. The oeuvre of this outstanding artist from the watershed period at the beginning of the twentieth century will be represented in over one hundred masterpieces, mostly on loan from major collections in Moscow and St Petersburg. Vladimir Tatlin began his career as a seaman. Until 1913 his artistic ... More

Arcade/Arcadia, an installation by Ellen Harvey on view at Locks Gallery in Philadelphia   Penumbra: A new exhibition by Danja Akulin opens at Erarta Galleries London   Institute of Contemporary Arts presents the UK premiere of Bruce Nauman's Days, a sound installation

Ellen Harvey, Arcade/Arcadia, 2011-12. Mixed media installation, 34 hand-engraved Plexiglas panels, lighting, wood. Dimensions variable.

PHILADELPHIA, PA.- Locks Gallery presents Arcade/Arcadia, an installation by Ellen Harvey, on view June 1st through July 13th, 2012. Ellen Harvey is known for her use of traditional media or aesthetics to create situations that call into question our expectations and desires for art. In Arcade/Arcadia (2011–12) an amusement arcade collides with a gallery to create an unsettling embodiment of how easily the desire for the sublime can collapse into an acceptance of commercial spectacle. From the outside, the viewer sees an old-fashioned aluminum fairground sign spelling out the word “ARCADIA” in six foot high lights leaning against an open framework wood shack. The inside of the structure is filled with the artist’s characteristic hand-engraved mirrors mounted on light boxes, offering a 360-degree view of a derelict seaside resort. The engravings appear as lines of light floating on the mirrored ... More

LONDON.- Erarta Galleries London presents Penumbra, a new exhibition by Danja Akulin. The word penumbra is often rendered "half-light," but the Latin origin paene umbra literally means "almost shadow." In between the shadow and the light there is a zone through which we may see what is in the penumbra, but we see it with a darkened hue, and it is problematic to say whether it is illuminated or not. In his work Danja Akulin is able to cast light into what is but a partially illuminated landscape. In the way he masters the light he is able to visually translate emotions and thoughts within the duality of darkness and brightness. The more obscure the landscape, the less light is needed for the mysteries that are either hidden or obvious to our eyes, and vice versa. This metaphor accounts for the fact that weak and unimportant feelings might easily resurface, while other strong ones might live in perpetual obscurity: ... More

LONDON.- From 19 June 2012 the ICA presents the UK premiere of Bruce Nauman’s Days, a sound installation consisting of a continuous stream of seven voices reciting the days of the week in random order. Fourteen flat panel speakers will be installed with one voice emanating from each pair of speakers as the visitor passes between them. The work invokes both the banality and the profundity of the passing of each day and invites reflection on how we measure, differentiate and commemorate time. In conjunction with the exhibition of Nauman’s Days, the ICA presents a series of sound commissions by over a hundred international artists. Selected by the ICA and institutions worldwide, the artists have been invited to submit a sound work taking its stimulus from the themes evoked in Nauman’s Days. SOUNDWORKS aims to take a broader look at the range of work being ... More

Exhibition of moving 3D images by Jeff Robb on view at Hay Hill Gallery

He is one of very few artists who has set out to explore the aesthetic and technical possibilities of ‘lenticular’ photography in his fine art practice. This arresting exhibition of moving 3D images at Hay Hill Gallery, Cork St, London will be the artist’s largest exhibition in London, his home city. ‘Liminal State’ is an exhibition of two parts. The upper gallery features a selection of nude studies and figurative works, never previously seen. Colourful semi-abstract works from Robb’s latest series ‘Eidolon’ and underwater lenticular photographs from the ‘Aerial’ series are shown alongside striking monochrome singular nudes and complex compositions from the ‘Unnatural Causes’ series, featuring multiple moving figures in complex cellular structures made by Robb himself. Of his pioneering figurative work, Robb ... More

Architect Moshe Safdie selected to design tallest residential building in Colombo
BOSTON, MASS.- Safdie Architects announced that the firm has been selected to design a new mixed-use development in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The project will be the first for Moshe Safdie in Sri Lanka, and is slated to be the tallest residential building in Colombo when it is completed. The 69-storey mixed-use development is in the city center and will face Beira Lake, with pedestrian accessible retail outlets at the ground level. The design includes expansive family and community space amenities such as community gardens, shared outdoor spaces within the upper levels of the building, and individual roof gardens or terraces for every residence, a hallmark of Safdie’s design philosophy to provide access to outdoor spaces in high density urban housing. South Carolina library shows 'Catch-22' author's writing tools
COLUMBIA (AP).- Students more accustomed to computer screens than manual typewriters are getting a chance to sit at author Joseph Heller's stained wooden desk and type on the battered Smith-Corona he used to compose his acclaimed novel "Catch-22." A small exhibit at a University of South Carolina library displays the desk, typewriter and lamp used by Heller as he wrote many of his major works. The university library has one of the largest collections of his papers, manuscripts and other memorabilia available to researchers, library officials said. "We acquired this with the expectation that students would type on the typewriter and experience sitting at his desk," said Elizabeth Suddeth, director of the Irvin Department of Rare Books and Special Collections at the Ernest F. Hollings Library on the Columbia campus, where the display is located. The display is available for ... More

Artist faces wreckage of sandy NY tall ship
By: Verena Dobnik, Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP).- Artist Matthew Long spent days carving 23 tons of sand into a sculpture of a tall ship to display on New York City's waterfront. Then, in seconds, it suffered the fate of sand castles everywhere. Long, a 57-year-old sand sculptor, arrived at Manhattan's South Street Seaport on Saturday morning to find his creation partially demolished and covered in boot prints, "about a size nine." "There were footprints all over the sand, and I was cursing under my breath," he said. "It was devastating — such a hard, sinking feeling after days of carving in the hot sun." Laughing at his own cheesy humor, the Staten Island resident added, "It took the wind out of my sails." He said he'd worried about leaving his work sitting outside on a Friday night near the ... Most extensive exhibition to date of works by the British artist Hilary Lloyd at Kunstmuseum Basel
BASEL.- The Museum für Gegenwartskunst presents the most extensive exhibition to date of works by the British artist Hilary Lloyd (b. 1964; lives in London). On two floors, the numerous works selected—and in some instances, created—for the show not only offer an impression of Hilary Lloyd’s enormous productivity; the synoptic arrangement also marks an important moment in her career as an artist. In her earlier installations from the 1990s, Lloyd primarily trained the camera’s eye on people involved in their everyday rituals and on the interdependency between humans and the city they inhabit. Her more recent works, by contrast, chiefly focus on architecture, surfaces, and light effects. Lloyd gradually abandoned the vantage points that used to be characteristic of her work, now pursuing her motifs with the camera or turning them upside down in order to generate ... More
