ROME (AP).- Two Italian art historians claim to have discovered as many as 100 works, most of them drawings, by a very young Caravaggio in a collection long attributed to a master Milanese artist he studied under while a boy in the late 1500s. It was not possible to immediately evaluate the claim Thursday by Maurizio Bernardelli Curuz and Adriana Conconi Fedrigolli on the eve of the publication of two ebooks laying out their case. But one expert familiar with the collection said it was unlikely that more than a few at most were actually done by Caravaggio and that none show the mature hand of the temperamental artist — who was famed for his dramatic chiaroscuro effect of dark space contrasting with light, vivid still life and the ... Brooklyn Museum acquires extremely rare secular painting from colonial Peru   New 007 exhibition at London's Barbican Centre looks at screen spy as style icon   Swann Galleries to offer a complete set of Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian

A Merry Company on the Banks of the Rímac River. Peru, Lima school, circa 1780-1805. Oil on canvas, 25 x 34 in. (63.5 x 86.4 cm). Brooklyn Museum, Gift of Lilla Brown in memory of her husband, John W. Brown, by exchange, 2012.41.

BROOKLYN, NY.- An extremely rare genre painting from the viceroyalty of Peru and formerly in the collection of a descendant of the Peruvian counts of Guagui has been purchased by the Brooklyn Museum. The work, A Merry Company along the Banks of the Rimac River was painted in Lima in the late eighteenth century for conspicuous display in an elite home, where it would have served as a visible demonstration of the owner's power and privilege within the Spanish empire. The painting was officially accessioned by the Museum's Board of Trustees on June 21, 2012, acquired with funds from the proceeds of the sale of Vasily Vereshchagin's Crucifixion by the Romans (1887), which was sold last November at auction to benefit the Brooklyn Museum's Acquisitions Fund. LONDON (AP).- If there's one thing James Bond has taught us it's that behind every great spy is a great tailor. A new exhibition at London's Barbican Centre explores the style of the suave secret agent, displaying costumes, props, set pieces and design drawings from half a century of 007 films. Assembled with help from the films' producers — who have a new Bond movie to promote in the fall — the exhibition includes the spy's tuxedos, Bond girl ballgowns and villains' vestments, as well as a selection of props and gadgets. There are also sketches by the films' influential set designer, Ken Adam, whose cavernous lairs and sleek space stations did much to create the movies' modernist luster. The show is both a reflection of the remarkable staying power of Ian Fleming's fictional secret agent and a ... More

PARIS.- Born in 1961, Marc Maison embraced the antiques dealer profession in 1979 and opened a stand at the Saint-Ouen Flea Market. Soon thereafter, he specialized in the elements of monumental architecture, an area often neglected by hiscolleagues. As a man of challenge with a drive to excel, Marc Maison is unimpressed by the technical constraints of these rare pieces of unusual sizes. As a result, he acquired the Tourny Fountain of Bordeaux in 2005, the very one that currently stands in front of the Parliament of Québec. It is a fountain of prominence as it originates from the premiere gardens at the Versailles Castle, which Marc Maison then retrieved and resold to the castle in 2009. London unveils Europe's tallest building - for now
LONDON (AP).- Europe's tallest building has been officially unveiled in London, but its tenure as the continent's highest skyscraper will be brief. The Shard, a 95-story tower which stands at 310 meter (1,016 feet), dwarfs almost everything around it, including nearby Tower Bridge and St Paul's Cathedral. It was officially named Thursday as the highest tower in Europe, in a ceremony carried out by Britain's Prince Andrew, the Duke of York. However, it is expected to be surpassed before the end of the year by Russia's planned 332 meter (1,089 feet) Mercury City Tower. Named for its resemblance to a sliver of glass, The Shard is to include apartments, offices, restaurants and a five-star hotel. Developer Irvine Sellar says the giant building will prove to be a success, despite Britain's sluggish economy. ... More
