CANNES.- Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) “painted the way some people write their autobiography.” And thus his work seems intimately linked to those places where the evolving artist chose to spend his time. Nostalgic for the brilliance of Spanish summers, as early as 1919 he began frequenting the “paths of the south” and in 1946 settled permanently in the Mediterranean-suffused landscape of the CĂ´te d'Azur. During the twenty-seven years of this particularly prolific sojourn, the painter lived successively in the towns of Vallauris, at the Villa la Galloise and later at his studios Le Fournas and Madoura, then in Cannes at the Villa la Californie and finally in Mougins at his farmhouse at Notre-Dame-de-Vie. This exceptional exhibition organized by the MusĂ©e National Picasso, which is on view at the Centre d’art La Malmaison, is a snapshot of this creative period. Paintings and ... More

Autumn sales at Koller Zurich to offer a spectacular rediscovery of an early painting by Goya   Exhibition at the Menil Collection explores the realm of silence in modern and contemporary art   MoMA presents first examination of childhood as a source for modern design thinking in the 20th century

Francisco de Goya (Fuentedodos 1746-1828 Bordeaux), Loth and his daughters (detail). Oil on canvas. 91.5x125 cm. CHF 600 000 / 800 000.

ZURICH.- In the week of 17 - 22 September 2012 Koller will offer at auction old masters, important furniture and applied arts, jewellery and wristwatches, as well as rare manuscripts and books. The most spectacular lot is a painting by the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya, which hung for over 80 years unrecognised in a private collection and has now been rediscovered. The main lot at Koller’s Old Master auction in Zurich on 21 September will be an early work by the important Spanish painter Francisco de Goya. The 91.5x125 cm painting depicts the biblical scene “Lot and his daughters”. The sky is coloured red by the flames from Sodom burning in the valley behind the trees. In the literature on the celebrated Spanish painter the work is usually dated to the second half of the 1770s. Goya, who was born in 1746, returned to Spain in 1771 after his Italian journey. In Spain he was occupied with commissions for churches and monasteries amongst other things and, from 177 ... More

HOUSTON, TX.- –Whether experienced as a source of inspiration, enigmatic force, or unsettling limbo zone, silence is elusive in today’s world. Inspired by John Cage’s 1952 groundbreaking composition 4’33” (and the 100th anniversary of the composer’s birth), Silence – co-organized by the Menil Collection and the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAM/PFA) – offers a thorough and stirring exploration of the exhibition’s subject. Conceived by Toby Kamps, Menil curator of modern and contemporary art, the exhibition means to “examine a few of the many attempts in which artists have employed the absence of sound or speech over the last century.” These attempts, Kamps added, have embraced silence as phenomenon, metaphor, force − and as an environmental state expressed in performance. Silence can also possess and convey powerful political ... More

WASHINGTON, DC.- India’s Mughal emperors, who reigned over a vast and wealthy empire that extended over most of the South Asian subcontinent between the 16th and 19th centuries, were passionate about lavish manuscripts and paintings. Between 1556 and 1657, the greatest Mughal patrons—the emperors Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan—formed grand workshops that brought together and nurtured India’s leading painters, calligraphers and illuminators. This remarkable artistic legacy is on view in “Worlds within Worlds: Imperial Paintings from India and Iran” at the Sackler July 28 through Sept. 16. The exhibition brings 50 of the finest folios and paintings from the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery collections, which together form one of the world’s most important repositories of Mughal and Persian painting. The exhibition’s title, “Worlds within Worlds,” refers to the ... NEW YORK, NY.- Spiders Alive!, a new exhibition on view at the American Museum of Natural History from July 28, 2012, through December 2, 2012, features approximately 20 species of live spiders and highlights this intriguing animal group‘s anatomy, behavior, and unique characteristics. The Museum, which has the world‘s largest research collection of spiders, has been at the forefront of studying spider diversity for over 75 years. For centuries, spiders have inspired mythmakers from Ovid to E. B. White to the creators of the eponymous superhero, but their actual role in diverse ecosystems around the globe is just as captivating. Among the most versatile animals on the planet, spiders inhabit every continent but Antarctica and are able to survive in environments that range from deserts to rainforests to crowded cities. They can be easy to miss, in part because many are secretive or too tiny to catch human eyes, but spide ... More

"This is more than a 45% increase over last year and almost double what we raised two years ago," says Managing Director Larry Wright. "We're immensely grateful for the community's support." Over the years, BAM has exponentially increased support through its annual fundraiser, affirming the Museum's role as a vibrant cultural institution with a growing national reputation.
