The exhibition features a brand new series of large-scale photographs by Brigitte Lacombe of more than 50 Arab sportswomen, from beginners to Olympians, from 20 different Arab countries, shown alongside videos by her sister, Marian Lacombe, which situate the images within the women’s personal histories and a wider –often unspoken – discourse of gender, culture and sport in the Arab world. The project, shot over a period of seven months, began in December 2011, in the Athletes Village at the Arab Games in Doha, where Brigitte and Marian Lacombe set up their own outdoor studio, working side by side. MADRID.- Artists and gallery owners protest outside the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid Tuesday July 24, 2012. The protest is against a tax on art and is part of the government?s steep hike in Spain?s sales tax and a reduction of funds to the arts. While one out of every four Spaniards are unemployed, the rate for job-seekers under 25 stands at 52 percent. Emigration by young adults is on the rise, and companies are taking advantage of new labor reforms that make it cheaper to fire workers. The country is in its second recession in three years. First solo UK exhibition of the Iranian artist Mehran Elminia's large-scale abstract paintings opens
LONDON.- Rosenfeld Porcini presents Revealing Harmonies by the emerging Iranian artist Mehran Elminia. This will be the first solo UK exhibition of Elminia’s work and will include oil and mixed media works on canvas displayed over both floors of the gallery. Elminia works on a canvas attached to the wall but his improvisation does not contain any of the violence found in works by artists such as Jackson Pollock. Working no more than 1 metre from the large canvas throughout, he eschews any idea of figuration; figures can appear, but the artist is oblivious until he steps back to look at the finished work. His purely emotional response to his art and the total oneness he achieves between body, brush and canvas has the capacity to create works of great emotional intensity. Sometimes doing 24 hours continual painting, the artist’s brush becomes a complete extension of his inner ... More
