| Tips for summer parties | Independence Day Posted: 02 Jul 2012 04:00 AM PDT
I think Buster Poindexter must have written the lyrics for Hot, Hot, Hot during a summer heat wave. Well, maybe not, but when the weather is sizzling I search for a diversion, like a party. If no one else is having one, I pony up and start planning. Do you ever think about the elements that go into a great … |

Mary Corbet‘s instructional videos make even complicated embroidery stitches doable. Her latest is basque stitch. She says, “You can think of the Basque stitch as a combination of twisted chain stitch and buttonhole stitch, upside down.” It’s easier than it sounds!
Just in time for Independence Day in the USA, here’s a patriotic doodle for your embroidery pleasure, thanks to Primitives by the Light of the Moon.
Leslie of Leslie’s Art and Sew has been meeting the challenge of stitching a heart every day for a year by creating sweet embroidered felt scissor fobs. Each one is different; each is utterly charming.
I’m loving Abby Glassenberg‘s update of a classic kids’ craft. She says she spotted the instructions for a yarn octopus in a 1966 magazine. (I remember making one in Brownies about 1960–one of my first crafts!) You can get the nostalgic look with lots more cuddly-ness by making it from fleece. The project is still no-sew–kids could glue google …

I’ve seen quite a few organization boards, and they are all great, but so many of them look the same. This one caught my eye because of the fun fonts, shapes and colors that were incorporated. You can see the tutorial over at THE MARRIED LIFE:

I love the look of these eye charts that spell out fun phrases. They make for great conversation pieces and are a lovely design element that you can add to any room. There’s a tutorial over at Design, Dining + Diapers, so head over there now to have a look —

This pretty side table was made using those pretty flat backed marbles that you buy at the craft store and some resin. Shannon over at Madigan Made will show you exactly what you need to do to create this pretty look in your home —

Still need some ideas for the 4th? Having a barbecue and just aren’t sure what that final element will be to add pizzazz to your table? Try these red, white and blue mason jars to snazz things up a bit! Head to Big Bear’s Wife for the scoop —

OK, OK, no more red, white and blue. After this one, for at least a few hours. This one is from yours truly, and I promise they are pretty darn easy to make. I created these 4th of July star sandwich cookie pops (with a fireworks-inspired surprise in the middle… Pop Rocks) for
Figures the genius of creative sweets (scratch that, genius of all things crafty in food) would come up with a super duper easy dessert for you to make last minute for the 4th of July: “Kaboom Cakes,” aka, store-bought cakes turned into firecrackers. Find the how-tos
As one in my current state, forbidden to enjoy a lovely cocktail (more on that later), I’m thankful for some alternatives. Like these oh so pretty layered drinks from
Still a few more of the red, white and blue to go! Next up, some festive madeleines from the queen-of-holiday-madeleines,
… made with cleverly dyed marshmallows, too, so you get a new technique snuck in there as well. Make marshmallow popcorn sparklers for the 4th of July
And now for something completely healthy: Make a fruit flag from apples and blueberries
I have a few more 4th of July in a row to bring you, then on the 5th you’ll all get a break from the red, white and blue. Upon reflection, it occurs to me, I’ve never made a trifle, a travesty that needs to be corrected. Make a trifle for the 4th
There are star-shaped marshmallows out there? How have I not seen these? I better talk to my supermarket manager. Because look what you can make with them for the 4th. Find the how-tos for sparkly star marshmallow straws
Anyone who knows anything about me knows what a fan of marshmallow pops I am. I’ve been making them for years now (see? check out
