Mexican archaeologists discover the burial of a high-ranking Zapotec individual

OAXACA.- The burial of a high ranked individual of the ancient zapotecan society, accompanied by an offering, was discovered by archaeologists of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH – Conaculta), on the third tomb of the Aztompa Archaeological Zone in Oaxaca. After the three-month old finding of a hitherto unheard of funerary complex which is composed of three funerary chambers, investigators were finally able to enter the third prehispanic sepulcher where, among other objects, they found a red vase with a human face estimated to date back to between 650 – 850 d. BROOKLYN, NY.- Jean-Michel Othoniel: My Way, a mid-career retrospective of the work of Jean-Michel Othoniel, one of France’s most prominent contemporary artists, features sixty-seven pieces that trace the artist’s career over the past twenty-five years. It is the artist’s first museum exhibition in the United States. My Way presents Othoniel’s early works from the 1980s, rendered in sulfur, phosphorus, and wax, that touch upon sexual identity and suffering, and his more recent large-scale works made with colorful Murano glass from Italy, a medium that combines strength and fragility. His organic and geometrical glass sculptures conjure historical and popular references while also evoking the fantasy universe of the fairytale. NEW YORK, NY.- London Street Photography, an exhibition created by the Museum of London, traveled to the Museum of the City of New York opening alongside a smaller new companion exhibition City Scenes: Highlights of New York Street Photography. Both exhibitions coincide with the the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. First on display at the Museum of London in 2010, London Street Photography, has attracted over 125,000 visitors, making it the Museum’s most popular temporary exhibition to date. BALTIMORE, MD.- Doreen Bolger, Director of The Baltimore Museum of Art, has announced the appointment of Kathryn Wysocki Gunsch, Ph.D. as Associate Curator and Department Head of the Department of the Arts of Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Pacific Islands. Gunsch comes to the BMA after having held a variety of curatorial and teaching positions. Over the past several years, she worked as a Graduate Intern at Grey Gallery at New York University during the exhibition Poetics of Cloth: African Textiles/Recent Art and taught as an Adjunct Instructor of art history at Marymount Manhattan College, Montclair State University, and New York University. COLUMBUS, GA.- The Columbus Museum announced today the acquisition of a pair of extraordinary portraits of George and Martha Washington by the important American artist Rembrandt Peale. The portraits are a gift from Dan and Kathelen Amos. “From the moment we found these portraits, still in shipping crates in a New York gallery, we knew they belonged in a museum, in order to be fully appreciated,” the Amoses said. “In our hearts, there was a strong desire to give them a permanent home in the Columbus Museum.” The Amoses cited the historical significance of the portraits and their educational value, particularly for children. LIVERPOOL.- The full programme of international commissions, major exhibitions and special events for Liverpool Biennial 2012, which will take place from 15 September – 25 November 2012, was announced today by the Biennial’s new Director, Sally Tallant. Liverpool Biennial is the largest contemporary art festival in the UK. For ten weeks every two years it commissions the most exciting artists from around the world, attracting over 600,000 visitors in 2010 and contributing £27m to Liverpool’s economy. NEW YORK, NY.- Seldom seen eighth century sutras, a highly unusual collaboration between two important 17th century artists, and paintings never previously exhibited in New York are among the myriad works of Japanese art that will be exhibited this September by leading galleries of Japanese Art. LONDON.- Set up in 2005 as a curatorial collective, Green Cardamom is a visual arts organisation that presents a view of the international centred on the Indian Ocean. Rare World War II naval dispatch brings $20K at auction
MILLVILLE, PA (AP).- A rare military cable heralding the end of World War II has fetched more than $20,000 at auction. The naval dispatch announced the end of hostilities with Japan. It was received aboard the USS Holland on Aug. 15, 1945, days after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and was kept in a crewman's shoebox for more than 60 years. Northeastern Pennsylvania auctioneer Kirk Williams sold the historic 8-inch-by-6.5-inch dispatch to a buyer from Nevada on Wednesday — the 67th anniversary of V-J Day. The lot included other World War II-era documents and photographs taken by Navy veteran Bob York, who died in February at age 91. Williams said the unidentified buyer purchased the dispatch as an investment and gift for his 31-year-old daughter. Art Gallery of Ontario extends hours due to popular demand for Picasso exhibition
TORONTO.- Time is running out to see the Art Gallery of Ontario’s hot summer exhibition, Picasso: Masterpieces from the Musée National Picasso, Paris before it concludes its only Canadian appearance on Aug. 26, 2012. The AGO is responding to popular demand by significantly extending its hours next week. Normally closed on Mondays, the AGO is making a special exception on Aug. 20 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., allowing even greater access to the exhibition during its final days. This Monday, both the AGO’s permanent collection and the Picasso exhibition will be open to visitors.
