LOS ANGELES (AP).- There is a career after death, at least if while alive you wielded star power like Marilyn Monroe. The bombshell actress continues to be a successful celebrity brand even 50 years after she died on Aug. 5, 1962, with a new digital emphasis to complement the wealth of photos, fashion, films and other cultural touchstones she left behind. Monroe ranked third last year in Forbes' annual list of top deceased celebrity earners, generating $27 million and coming in behind Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley. It was a comeback for the actress, who had fallen off the list the previous two years. When the list is updated in the fall, it will likely show it has been another lucrative year for the actress' estate, which was purchased in 2010 by Authentic Brands Group and its partner, NECA. The company is in the midst of upgrading Monroe offerings from trinkets to cosmetic lines, spas, salons and apparel. From beyond the grave, Monroe tweets ... More

HAMBURG.- For almost 150 years, one of the greatest literary inventions has fascinated children and adults alike: Lewis Carroll’s tale of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Carroll’s stories continue to captivate an audience of millions, whether as novels or as film adaptations. Now, for the first time, an exhibition is being dedicated to Alice and the many different ways in which she has inspired and influenced visual artists. Alice in the Wonderland of Art at the Hamburger Kunsthalle brings together around 200 works from 150 years of art history, including paintings, sculptures, book illustrations, photographs, drawings, films and ... HAMBURG.- On the first floor of its premises in Hamburg, Kunstverein Hamburg is presenting the first institutional solo exhibition of works by Cologne-based artist Alexandra Bircken, who was born in 1967. The show primarily features recent works produced between 2010 and 2012. The title of the exhibition, Hausrat, meaning “household assets” or “household objects”, can be taken literally. The assortment of objects filling the exhibition space all have to do with household and home in one way or another. Many are plucked straight from the domestic environment – such as ironing boards, sledge runners and carpets – while others play on associations of domesticity or convey the sense of “home” as something offering cover and shelter. Detritus that would generally be regarded as refuse is given a new, modified form: Sweepings are permanently preserved ... More

Demuth Museum exhibition features the work of renowned photographer Victoria Sambunari
LANCASTER, PA.- The Demuth Museum’s new exhibition features the work of nationally renowned contemporary photographer and Lancaster native Victoria Sambunaris. The large-scale photographs on view, in her first solo exhibition in her hometown, are products of ten years worth of yearly journeys across America. On her trips across the vast landscape of America, Sambunaris is intrigued by national parks, mines and our country’s border with Mexico. Her focus on the American landscape began in Lancaster, where Sambunaris was preoccupied with how we as humans transform the American landscape by manipulating it and situating ourselves within it. These photographs, astounding in their physical scale, also make a point of illustrating the important effects humans have on these vast landscapes. This dichotomy is at the heart of her work and differentiates it from earlier landscape photographers such as ... More

Wild West town for sale in Utah for $3.9 million
By: Ivan Moreno, Associated Press
SALT LAKE CITY (AP).- The real estate listing reads like a Wild West exhibit: An old gold mine, a geyser, and a supposed hideout of famed outlaws. It's all in a middle-of-nowhere ghost town for sale three hours southeast of Salt Lake City. Listing price? $3.9 million. Woodside once bustled with about 300 residents in the early 1900s when it was a water stop for steam engines. Now the town sits empty — of people, that is. Two free-range llamas come with the deal. There's a geyser, too, but it no longer shoots high after being jammed by vandals. Once, the cold-water spout shot up 75 feet and was a popular tourist attraction known as the Roadside Geyser. No entry fee required. Even though the town has seen better days, real estate agent Mike Metzger ... More

Painter Ard Berge paints dreamlike depictions of landscape and portrait
NEW YORK, NY.- Through an admixture of academic naturalism and whimsical surrealism, artist Ard Berge examines themes of American experience, identity, and history. Works such as Conquest of the West, Pegasus Reborn, and Uncle Cincinnatus Hitches Up the Plow center on motifs of rural Americana while exploring the disjuncture between national ideals and contemporary reality. By means of the artist's meticulous aesthetic, Berge renders his figures and environments with a combination of uncanny precision and wry social commentary. Berge received his B.F.A. in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995 and his M.F.A. from The New York Academy of Art in 1997. Between 1990 and 1998, he studied at The Art League at the Torpedo Factory in Virginia, the Centro Lorenzo de Medici in Florence, the Patrick Devonas Studio in New York, and the Water ... More
