Exhibition at Carnegie Museum of Art showcases 80 rarely-seen prints and drawings   Chuck Ramirez photograph acquired by Smithsonian American Art Museum for permanent collection   Spain's cultural treasures on exclusive U.S. tour from the Prado, Madrid, to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Arrangement in Black: Portrait of Señor Pablo de Sarasate, 1884. Oil on canvas.

PITTSBURGH, PA.- 80 rarely-seen prints and drawings by James Abbot McNeill Whistler have gone on view Saturday, August 4 at Carnegie Museum of Art. Organized by associate curator of fine arts Amanda Zehnder, Whistler & Rebellion in the Art World explores Whistler's flamboyant defiance of artistic conventions, and his insistence on the importance of “art for art’s sake.” The museum holds a substantial collection of Whistler’s prints, which have not been on view since 1998. Only an artist as talented as Whistler could get away with his rebellious persona. Deliberately provocative and controversy-seeking, he maintained a contentious stance toward other artists, critics, academics, viewers, and patrons. His legacy, on the other hand, speaks for his immense ability to create exquisite works of art. Carnegie Museum of Art engaged Whistler shortly after its foundation in 1895; he served on several advisory boards for ... More

Hendrick de Keyser, ‘Screaming child’ (Schreeuwend kind), Hendrick de Keyser, c. 1615.

AMSTERDAM.- Recently, the Rijksmuseum acquired a sculpture of a screaming child created by Hendrick de Keyser (1565-1621), who is considered one of the foremost 17th-century Dutch sculptors. The sculpture, which adds a key new dimension to the oeuvre of this versatile artist, was gifted to the Rijksmuseum by an anonymous donor. The small head, which is carved in wood, is a particularly expressive depiction of a screaming child being stung by a bee on his forehead and alludes to a well-known story from the ancient classics in which Cupid, the god of love, is chased and stung by a bee after stealing honey from a beehive. The goddess of love and his mother, Venus, consoles him, but confronts him with his own contradiction: if being stung by a such small creature hurts so much, how painful must it be when Cupid’s arrows pierce someone’s heart? The moral of the story is that while love is as sweet as honey, the pangs o ... More

Fredrik Lindqvist, Kánguru, 2011. Woodcut on fabric, 250 cm x 275 cm.

COPENHAGEN.- Fredrik Lindqvist works with woodcuts. Clippings from pop music magazines, advertisements and books on animals are used as models for the underlying picture. The various clippings are set together as collages and painted over on wood panels. Afterwards, the woodprints are transferred by press onto plain-coloured, dotted or flowery fabrics. The resultant printed materials are then sewn together with a coarse black thread to form a single work. The works consist of many pictures in one and the same picture, and describe the stressed, high tempo society of today, and the constant stream of images which surround and bombard us from amongst other things, shifting TV channels. Fredrik Lindqvist mixes humour with dead seriousness. Middle age printing technique meets serious modern features, with time clash as a consequence. Fredrik Lindqvist, born 1968 in Kristianstadt, Sweden and living in Munich, has been educated at the Art Academys in Umeå Sweden and ... More

New featured acquisition: The Racine Art Museum debuts Cristina Cordova's sculpture
RACINE, WIS.- The Racine Art Museum debuts Cristina Cordova's sculpture Tiempo sin Memoria (Time without Memory), which has just entered the museum's collection. RAM thanks long-time benefactor, Karen Johnson Boyd, for continuing to donate exciting works like this to the permanent contemporary craft collection. The museum is delighted to debut this new acquisition, honoring Mrs. Boyd's wishes to share this work with its guests. Cordova has become nationally known for her large-scale figurative sculptures. Because they are representational, her works suggest to viewers some form of narrative or a literal story. However, upon closer examination, her figures express a wide range of emotions for they are much more personal in meaning and open to multiple interpretations. Cordova was a dancer throughout her youth and her figures demonstrate an understanding of stance, ... More

Orit Akta Hildesheim, recipient of the Haim Shiff Prize for Figurative-Realist Art, exhibits at Tel Aviv Museum
TEL AVIV.- Orit Akta Hildesheim's paintings are defined by a highly detailed form of realism, while their multilayered character is shaped by harmonies of subtle, translucent shades that form an almost monochromatic palette. Her work exceeds the realm of the private and the biographical, yet does not position itself as universal. Her highly precise compositions are formed through a repetitive process of drawing lines and applying tiny patches of color, which come together to form complex images. Her paintings are highly attentive to reality. At the same time, the artist's gaze is introverted and focuses on the tension between presence and absence, the visible and the invisible, and her painterly surfaces are marked by an aesthetic and poetic complexity. This exhibition's opening series of paintings presents a catalogue of female dress items ranging from a perfectly captured bridal gown to ... More

Alexandra Gibson's solo photography exhibit "For Consumption Only" opens at Skotia Gallery
CULVER CITY, CA.- On Saturday, August 4th, Los Angeles native Alexandra Gibson unveiled a closely guarded and provocative new series of photographs that has been in the making since 2008. For Consumption Only is an emotional, visceral, and confrontational display of the flesh, both dead and alive, in close interaction with each other and with the viewer in a dance of the divine and the macabre. A year after my mother unexpectedly died, I travelled with my mentor, photography legend Mary Ellen Mark, into the hidden districts of Oaxaca, Mexico. I crossed over into the corners of a city that even locals have difficulty navigating. Yearning to literally face death with my art, and consumed by my mother’s sudden passing, I found myself compelled to photograph a local slaughterhouse. To visually capture the full severity of life and death. The first series of shoots in the ... More

Clifton Truman Daniel visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park on Saturday and laid a wreath for the 140,000 people killed by the Aug. 6, 1945, bombing authorized by his grandfather. Another atomic blast in Nagasaki three days later killed 70,000 more. "I think this cenotaph says it all — to honor the dead to not forget and to make sure that we never let this happen again," Daniel said after offering a silent prayer. Daniel, 55, is in Japan to attend ceremonies next week in Hiroshima and Nagasaki marking the 67th anniversary of the bombings. Minnesota bridge collapse artifacts stay out of sight
By: Brian Bakst, Associated Press
OAKDALE, MINN (AP).- To remember the collapse of a busy Minnesota highway bridge, state historians preserved items they thought would vividly convey the chaotic scene that unfolded back in 2007: a battered Interstate 35W sign, an emergency worker's shirt, the back door of a school bus that young survivors used to escape. Five years later, most items collected from the rush-hour disaster that killed 13 people and injured scores of others remain tucked away from public view, held back partly by concern that emotions may still be too raw for a museum display. "I don't think it would be inconceivable that we would do an exhibition on the event," said Adam Scher, a collections department curator for the Minnesota Historical Society. "I think perhaps more ... More
