Five museums in the Netherlands and Belgium launch the online video channel ARTtube   Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam acquires iconic Dan Flavin installation for reopening   Pinakothek der Moderne sets up a temporary pavilion to house its collections

The website www.arttube.nl includes exceptional interviews with and fascinating portraits of renowned artists and designers.

AMSTERDAM.- ARTube, a collective video channel for art and design in the Netherlands and Belgium, was launched on July 5. The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, M HKA in Antwerp, Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, De Pont in Tilburg and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam will publish programs of high quality, largely produced by the museums themselves based on each institution’s specialties. The website www.arttube.nl includes exceptional interviews with and fascinating portraits of renowned artists and designers. Through the online channel the museums offer glimpses behind the scenes―such as during exhibition installations or restoration of artworks―and give voice to curators and restorers. Programs of fiction and experimentation are also included, for example the Boijmans’ TV series as well as a number of unusual animation films. The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, built in 1895, is the largest museum for modern ... More

AMSTERDAM.- The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam announced the purchase of an iconic installation created in 1986 by Dan Flavin especially for the museum's historic building. Reinstalled in 2011 and presented as part of Temporary Stedelijk 2, the installation will be on view next as part of the reopening of the Stedelijk Museum on September 23, 2012. This major acquisition has been made possible by support from a private donor, Mondriaan Fonds and the Titus Circle of the Vereniging Rembrandt. A special digital publication produced by the Stedelijk Museum in conjunction with the acquisition will be available online on the museum's website. In 1986, Stedelijk Museum director Wim Beeren invited American artist Dan Flavin (1933–1996) to create a large-scale installation for the upper hallway surrounding the grand staircase of the museum. MUNICH.- The Pinakothek der Moderne is due to close for renovations in February 2013 and is scheduled to reopen in September 2013. The closure of the world-renowned museum building, with four museums under one roof, is being seized on as an unmissable opportunity. A makeshift exhibition pavilion, named the Schaustelle or ‘show site’, is to be set up by the four collections at the Pinakothek der Moderne for the duration of the renovations, providing them with a temporary platform to hold exhibitions, workshops, talks, performances, film screenings and video installations and much more besides. The project has been initiated by the Stiftung Pinakothek der Moderne. With its four separate collections dedicated to modern art, the graphic arts, architecture and design, the Pinakothek der Moderne is one of the best-loved and most-visited museums on the local, national and even international cultural circuit. CINCINNATI.- Neil Armstrong was a soft-spoken engineer who became a global hero when as a steely-nerved pilot he made "one giant leap for mankind" with a small step onto the moon. The modest man, who had people on Earth entranced and awed from almost a quarter-million miles away, but credited others for the feat, died Saturday. He was 82. Armstrong died following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures, his family said in a statement. Armstrong had had a bypass operation this month, according to NASA. His family didn't say where he died; he had lived in suburban Cincinnati. Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon July 20, 1969, capping the most daring of the 20th century's scientific expeditions. His first words after becoming the first person to set foot on the surface are etched in history books and the ... More

WASHINGTON, DC.- Wielding large portfolios under their arms, Political History Curators Larry Bird and Harry Rubenstein of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History will wind their way through the crowds at the Republican and Democratic National Conventions, not to find a better vantage, but to scout out the best political memorabilia. Since the late 1980s, the duo have been attending party primaries and conventions to collect signs, buttons, posters, hats, sunglasses and other novelties for the museum. It is just one step in the ongoing effort to preserve materials for future generations to study the American political movements. Every four years “Harry and Larry,” as they are known, attend both conventions to speak with delegates, volunteers, vendors, supporters and protestors about the ways they personally engage in the political process. The curators’ goal is to bring back material th ... More

PARIS.- The Satellite project intervenes in the interstitial spaces of the Jeu de Paume, meaning that it appropriates existing areas in the museum that were not created for exhibition proposes. Since it is not a simple sealed white cube, artists need to think not only about the specific work they would like to do but also, and very importantly, to consider the challenges presented by the space itself. This was for Rosa Barba the onset of the concept of her exhibition for Satellite. If the available spaces were unconventional, then the exhibition itself should be unconventional, challenging it as well as the conventions of presenting artworks. Starting in the hall and stretching out to the auditorium, Barba transformed the whole area into one continuous work in which, as the spectator passes through, several episodes unfold through filmic and sculptural installations. The title of the exhibition “back stage ... More

FRANKFURT.- Nine years after the exhibition deutschemalereizweitausenddrei (2003), which drew large audiences, in the summer of 2012 the Frankfurter Kunstverein is once again presenting an exhibition solely dedicated to painting. Under the title Painting from Uncertain Places the show includes the work of Tilo Baumgärtel (Leipzig), Susanne Kühn (Freiburg), Antje Majewski (Berlin), and Hannes Michanek (Frankfurt), four artists who are well aware of the fetish-like character that figurative painting is presumed to have—and of its ambivalent relationship to the art market, the reproach of it being decorative, and how readily it can be appropriated for purposes of representation. The exhibition at the Frankfurter Kunstverein demonstrates how open and layered figurative painting can be, when artists are conscious of the illusionary potential of the medium. It reveals the inherent capacity of these works to create ... More

HAMILTON.- The Art Gallery of Hamilton opened the eagerly-anticipated AGH Design Annex, its satellite location in the heart of the James Street North Arts District. The new facility, which opened in July, enables the AGH to introduce new and different types of programming to Hamilton. “The Design Annex is a vital new branch of the Art Gallery of Hamilton,” said Louise Dompierre, President and CEO, Art Gallery of Hamilton. “Here, people will be able to see experimental exhibitions, and discover new products, many of which will be made by local artists and artisans. And, people and organizations will be able to enjoy the space as a backdrop to their own functions.” The Design Annex is best defined as a creativity lab where experimental exhibitions are mounted and small, intimate performances are held. KARLSRUHE.- As a medium, the newspaper has been an object of art since the mid-nineteenth century. Whether as tool for enlightenment or as an instrument of manipulation, artists have drawn on the medium in a number of ways and for several reasons, and to which they ascribe varying degrees of meaning. The exhibition “ARTandPRESS. Art. Truth. Reality.” presents around 50 artistic approaches, illustrating the network of links between journalism and art, and the ways in which artists draw on media for their creative production. A brief glance at the art history of the foregoing 200 years shows a close-knit relationship between art and press. Art and the newspaper share common features in their intention to enquire, to clarify ... More

John CRASH Matos.

NEW YORK, NY.- Antiquorum announced it will host “CRASH: Back on the Block,” an exhibit of new works by celebrated graffiti artist and avid watch collector John CRASH Matos. The show will be held September 13 through October 6 at Antiquorum’s Gallery space on 57th Street and Madison Avenue in New York City and will feature approximately 12 new large-scale works, as well as a “pop-up shop” of watches for sale by Antiquorum. For the first time since he famously painted English guitarist and singer-songwriter Eric Clapton’s five guitars, one of which sold at auction for over $321,000 in 2004, CRASH will hand paint another special object — this time, a Patek Philippe clock. “I’ll be using pop-inspired colors to paint the clock, something a little ‘street’, but keeping some of the refined elements intact,” said CRASH. The proceeds will be ... More

Artists of the North Korean Mansudae Art Studio open exhibition at galerie son
BERLIN.- Only a few steps away from the North Korean embassy, galerie son is exhibiting from the end of August a small selection of works by some of the most renowned artists of the Mansudae Art Studio of North Korea. The paintings and prints were chosen in Pyongyang and show a variety of styles and techniques in dealing with the subject of landscape, which has become very popular with the Mansudae-artists since the Seventies. Water, be it the sea, a lake, river or waterfall, plays a central role in most of the works, as does the mountainous Korean landscape. The association of artists Mansudae should not at all be understood as a variant of the Chinese artists’ village Dafen, which produces copies of paintings on an industrial scale. Although the Mansudae Art Studio also produces “utilitarian” art – for example official sculptures and paintings that are often commissioned from ... More

Frieze Masters 2012: Talks programme announced

Frieze Masters talks brings together three leading international painters with directors and curators from some of the world’s most renowned museums, exploring the dialogue between art, past and present. Cecily Brown will reveal the thinking behind her reinterpretations of traditional imagery and subject matter with Nicholas Penny (Director, National Gallery, London); Luc Tuymans will give an insight into the decisions he makes in his ... Our Mutual Friends: A new online art project launches next week
LONDON.- Our Mutual Friends is a Film and Video Umbrella project presenting four newly commissioned online artworks that take Charles Dickens’ allegorical novel and find echoes in the present. Manifesting in locations both on and offline, Our Mutual Friends connects the contemporary phenomenon of social media with the legacy of Dickens. The project mobilises Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites and apps to consider Dickens’ satire on ‘society’, ‘celebrity’ and the superficiality of friendships in the light of our contemporary cultural moment. The new works by Gayle Chong Kwan, Graham Hudson, Thomson & Craighead and Janice Kerbel will be available online at www.ourmutualfriends.com and through various social networking sites from 30 August when London’s Jerwood Space will host a launch event. Arnolfini to explore the relationship between work, play, and resistance
BRISTOL.- Arnolfini presents a two-day event with Franco "Bifo" Berardi, Lars Bang Larsen and Federico Campagna, exploring the relationship between work, play, and resistance. The event will coincide with final days of Olivia Plender’s exhibition, Rise Early, Be Industrious, which closes on Sunday 9 September. Including talks, discussions and a film screening, the event will discuss the 1960s and 1970s as a decisive moment in contemporary understanding of subjectivity and politics. With a new emphasis on information, and an emerging global network of trade and production, a new regime of power was forming in which the meaning of ‘resistance’ was also changing. The events will highlight the role of play and pedagogy, both in relation to their function in the emancipatory thinking of the counter movements and political activism of the 1960s and 1970s, and within the contemporary culture ...
