TOKYO (AP).- Polka dots are Japanese avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama's lifelong inspiration, obsession and passion. And so they're everywhere — not only on canvases but on installations shaped like gnarled tentacles and oversized yellow pumpkins. As part of her retrospective on exhibit at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, they also sparkle as "firefly" light bulbs reflected on water and mirrors. Kusama's signature splash of dots has now arrived in the realm of fashion in a new collection from French luxury brand Louis Vuitton — bags, sunglasses, shoes and coats. "Polka dots are fabulous," Kusama said in a recent interview with The Associated Press, looking much younger than her 83 years in a bright red wig, a polka dot dress she designed herself and one of the new Louis Vuitton polka ... Kneeling Luohan. White Marble, China, Northern Song dynasty (AD 960 – 1127). Height: 62 cm.

PARIS.- The Song dynasty is the founding period of the modern Chinese culture. Inventions such as gunpowder, paper currency and the printing technique are all attributed to the Chinese community, as well as developed irrigation techniques and important reforms which stimulated the development of agriculture.
In the arts, classical painting displaying the fusion of poetry and calligraphy reached its peak during this period. In the temples of Shanxi, Buddhist sculpture evolved from the Romanesque period and blossomed into a gothic style, privileging wood over stone. For the 26th Biennale des Antiquaires, the Jacques Barrère Gallery presents an important collection of Chinese Buddhist sculptures from the Song dynasty. Three large standing Bodhisattvas will form the heart of this selection. Destined to decorate the temples in Shanxi, these graceful sculptures reveal a proud yet gracious presence, icons ... More

Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe, Necklace, c. 1950. Brass, wood and bone. Photo: Linn Ahlgren/Nationalmuseum.

STOCKHOLM.- Nationalmuseum has acquired an elegant necklace by silversmith and artist Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe. In the mid-20th century, she transformed the way jewellery was made and appreciated through her design language and her choice of materials. Dating from the beginning of the 1950s, the necklace has a brass neck ring with a pendant in various woods and ivory. Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe (1927-2004) was a pioneer of Swedish jewellery in the mid-20th century, in terms of design, use of materials and attitudes towards the art. To most people, jewellery was a prestigious object that women were given by their husbands and that indicated his wealth and status. The larger the stones in the wife’s jewellery, the more successful her husband was deemed to be. It was this attitude to jewellery that Bülow-Hübe revolutionised when she started to design and make jewellery from more modest materials for her circle ... More

MILAN (AP).- Fashion journalist Anna Piaggi, who provided inspiration for designer Karl Lagerfeld and was celebrated for her own eccentric style, died Tuesday. She was 81. Vogue Italia said on its website that she died in Milan. No cause of death was given. For years, Piaggi's vibrant dress sense — including funky hats and theatrical makeup — made her stand out on the front rows of Milan and Paris runway shows. Piaggi started her career as a translator for Mondadori publishing company, and went on to write for, among others, Vogue Italia. She provided inspiration for Lagerfeld, who published a sketchbook of her creations and once wrote "Anna invents fashion." The Victoria and Albert Museum in London held an exhibition in 2006 of her extensive wardrobe collection, including thousands of dresses and hundreds of pairs of shoes. Master milliner Stephen Jones paid tribute to Piaggi, saying she had served as his "guiding light and an inspiration" and praising her for her "e ... More
