New logo for the Rijksmuseum: Irma Boom designs new Rijksmuseum house style

The design is clear and powerful and anchors the museum in the present.

AMSTERDAM.- The new logo of the Rijksmuseum was today unveiled at the museum. The logo forms part of the new house style for the Rijksmuseum, which has been designed by the internationally known Dutch designer Irma Boom. With this the Rijksmuseum bids a fond farewell to the old logo that was designed 32 years ago. The presentation of the new house style is taking place as a prelude to the reopening of the Rijksmuseum in April 2013. Irma Boom: My starting point was the fact that the Rijksmuseum is a national museum with international appeal. The design is clear and powerful and anchors the museum in the present. New house style In addition to the new logo, the new Rijksmuseum house style incorporates a newly designed typeface and colour palette. The new typeface, named de Rijksmuseum, was specially developed for the Rijksmuseum by typographic ... More

The Best Photos of the Day
BORJA.- A combination of three documents provided by the Centre de Estudios Borjanos on August 22, 2012 shows the original version of the painting Ecce Homo (L) by 19th-century painter Elias Garcia Martinez, the deteriorated version (C) and the restored version by an elderly woman in Spain. An elderly woman?s catastrophic attempt to ?restore? a century-old oil painting of Christ in a Spanish church has provoked popular uproar, and amusement. Titled ?Ecce Homo? (Behold the Man), the original was no masterpiece, painted in two hours in 1910 by a certain Elias Garcia Martinez directly on a column in the church at Borja, northeastern Spain. The well-intentioned but ham-fisted amateur artist, in her 80s, took it upon herself to fill in the patches and paint over the original work, which depicted Christ crowned with thorns, his sorrowful gaze lifted to heaven. STOCKHOLM.- Last month, during routine functional performance testing of the mutibeam mapping echosounders on the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s flagship R/V Falkor, the team aboard—including researchers from the University of New Hampshire, Ifremer, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution—discovered the S.S. Terra Nova, a whaler, sealer and polar exploration ship that sunk off the southern coast of Greenland in September, 1943, after being damaged by ice. The performance verification of R/V Falkor’s scientific echo sounders precedes oceanographic research cruises set to begin in 2013. The tests included a shallow water survey off the southern coast of Greenland to assess the Kongsberg EM710 multibeam mapping echo sounder’s performance in complex topography. The testing took place on July 11, ... More

Artist rendering released by the Public Art Fund in New York, scaffolding surrounds the exterior of the statue of Christopher Columbus. AP Photo/Tatzu Nishi.

By: Ula Ilnytzky, Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP).- A Japanese artist is inviting the public to have an intimate view of Christopher Columbus high above a hectic intersection in midtown Manhattan. Tatzu Nishi is constructing a contemporary living room on top of the Columbus Monument in Columbus Circle, where a 13-foot statue of Columbus is perched on a six-story column in the middle of a plaza where five busy streets intersect. Some Italian-Americans say the art project makes a mockery of the great explorer and trivializes history. "Discovering Columbus," commissioned by the nonprofit Public Art Fund, is a free exhibition that will run from Sept. 20 to Nov. 18. Nishi has encased the 70-foot-tall column in scaffolding and is in the process of erecting the living room — complete with couch, coffee table and lamps — around the figure of Columbus. Visitors will climb stairs to reach the living room, where they will have a bird's-eye view ... More

MOSCOW.- The exhibition gives viewers a unique opportunity to follow the transformation of portrait and landscape art from the 16th century to the modern age through works from the magnificent collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts (Museum of Fine Arts) in Nantes, France. The Museum’s history began in September 1801 when the government issued a decree authorizing the creation of 15 museums in a number of French cities. The «Chaptal Decree» delivered «treasures won from the enemies of the Republic» to these museums. Since 1838 the museum has adhered to the policy defined by a decision of the City Council, which was above all to acquire works by modern masters (of the respective periods). For example, the Museum’s collection includes more than 2,000 works created from 1950 to 2010. The goal of the exhibition is to show the transformation that traditional genres like portrait and landscape art have undergone by discovering their «traces» in the art ... More

PORT-AU-PRINCE (AP).- The nonprofit aid group founded by Hollywood star Sean Penn in the aftermath of Haiti's deadly 2010 earthquake will oversee demolition of the wrecked National Palace, the Haitian government said Tuesday. Government spokesman Lucien Jura told The Associated Press that Penn's J/P HRO group will begin the demolition in the next 10 days. The group is not charging for the work, which is expected to take about two months, Jura said in an email. "Amb. Penn mentioned that his organization (J/P HRO) could provide the engineers and equipment to do the demolition at no cost to the government," Jura wrote in an email, referring to the position that Penn holds as ambassador-at-large for Haiti. The earthquake toppled hundreds of buildings in the capital of Port-au-Prince and in other cities to the south. The National Palace was among them, its white dome and the rest of the structure slowly falling into itself. The ... More

Highlights of the exhibition include an enlarged set of houses from the game Monopoly cast in nickel plated steel and a folded polished stainless steel paper airplane. Discussing the origins of the Objects series the artist states, “two rather dirty, tarnished truck springs were found in a cow field behind the house I rented while in architecture school at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, California. Washington Monument didn't sink after earthquake
WASHINGTON (AP).- The Washington Monument did not sink any further into the ground as a result of last year's 5.8-magnitude earthquake, government surveyors said in a report released Tuesday. The upper portion of the monument sustained several large cracks during the quake on Aug. 23, 2011, and the iconic obelisk will likely be closed for repairs until 2014. The repairs, estimated to cost at least $15 million, will require a massive scaffolding to be built around the 555-foot monument. The monument was built on land that used to be underwater and has sunk about 2.2 inches since 1901. Surveyors expected at least some modest settling as a result of the earthquake, but in a report released Tuesday, the National Geodetic Survey said the quake had made no discernible difference. Dave Doyle, the project manager for the survey, said he was surprised and pleased by its findings. "We're ... More

"Bios - Concepts of Life in Contemporary Sculpture" opens at Georg-Kolbe-Museum
BERLIN.- The exhibition Bios – Concepts of Life in Contemporary Sculpture brings international artists together in terms of their involvement with the living, in particular concerning the upheavals in modern life sciences by the progressive developments in microbiology and genetic engineering. As an artistic genre, sculpture is intertwined with concepts of vitality since time immemorial, as expressed in one of its origin myths. Ovid’s story of the sculptor Pygmalion tells the tale of the divine transformation of an ivory statue that he created into a living woman. At the symbolic level, this text refers to the summoning of matter through the sculptural act, marking a peculiar perimeter between the artificial and the living at least since antiquity. In the hands of the sculptor, raw material is transformed to a form that does not claim the place of the living from the outset, but does indeed raise the ... More
