Cleveland Museum of Art acquires two stellar Classical and Pre-Columbian objects

CLEVELAND, OH.- The Cleveland Museum of Art is a collecting institution and has been acquiring antiquities since it was founded in 1913. These latest acquisitions highlight an ongoing commitment to enhancing the museum’s permanent holdings across the full scope of its collections with outstanding works of art. LONDON.- The Art Fund today announced its support of the Fitzwilliam Museum’s Public Appeal to acquire Nicolas Poussin’s masterpiece Extreme Unction (c. 1638-40). The painting, the value of which has been agreed at £14m, has been made available to the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, for just under £3.9m, thanks to H.M. Government’s Acceptance-in-Lieu scheme. Thus far, nearly 10% of this target has been pledged, and the Art Fund and the Fitzwilliam Museum have today begun their campaign to raise the rest of the money. One of the surviving Seven Sacraments painted in Rome for the renowned scholar and connoisseur Cassiano dal Pozzo, Extreme Unction (‘Final Anointing’) has long been considered by critics to be the finest work from one of the most remarkable series of paintings ever conceived. NEW YORK, NY.- Gagosian Gallery announced four monumental sculptures by the late John Chamberlain, on view at the Park Avenue plaza outside the historic Seagram Building in Manhattan from August 10 through November 16, 2012. PINEAPPLESURPRISE (2010), MERMAIDSMISCHIEF (2009), ROBUSTFAGOTTO (2008), and FROSTYDICKFANTASY (2008) are among the later sculptures that Chamberlain produced during his sixty-year career. Up to fifteen feet in height, the works on view are constructed from silver, green, or copper-colored industrial aluminum, which has been looped and flexed into whimsical, biomorphic forms. LONDON.- The sale of The Opulent Eye - 500 Years: Decorative Arts Europe which will take place at Christie's on 20 September 2012 is led by an important private collection of 19th century marble sculpture. Comprising twenty lots the collection is expected to realise in excess of £400,000. The group focuses upon belle époque marble statuary and genre figures and was assembled by a discerning private collector, who was attracted to marble statuary by the skill of the sculptor in carving such intricately detailed and lifelike figures. Highlights of the collection include a Belgian art nouveau marble regulateur (estimate: £50,000 – 100,000). Leading the sale is a unique and magnificent medal “Order of Blue Sky and White Sun” awarded to Chiang Kai-shek in 1930, estimated at HK$3-5 million. It is the first time this precious medal in exceptional condition has ever appeared at auction and is expected to generate enormous interest amongst collectors. According to a book on this medal written by respected collector and scholar Chuk Hong Ming, the “Order of Blue Sky and White Sun” was instituted in 1929 after the Nationalist government was established in Nanking (Nanjing). It was the highest military decoration awarded to any military personnel for their distinguished achievements in defending the country against the enemy. NEW YORK, NY.- Word Symbol Space, a selection of works by six contemporary artists, will be on view at The Jewish Museum in the final gallery of its permanent exhibition, Culture and Continuity: The Jewish Journey, from August 11 through October 7, 2012. These post-1970 works from the Museum's collection all respond to mid-twentieth-century modernism. Each uses the language of abstraction - areas of pure color, geometric shapes, and gestural brushwork - and adds to it, incorporating words and symbols with specific personal, historical, and cultural meanings. Artists represented include William Anastasi, Ross Bleckner, Dana Frankfort, Alain Kirili, Brigitte NaHoN and Frank Stella. Simply entitled Qing porcelain from a private collection, it comprises twenty superb imperial pieces which will be on show at Eskenazi Ltd., 10 Clifford Street , London W1 from Thursday 1 to Friday 23 November 2012. LOS ANGELES, CA.- Experimental filmmaker Alia Syed makes her West Coast debut at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art with an installation of her film Eating Grass (2003), on view from August 11, 2012–July 28, 2013. Filmed in Karachi, Lahore, and London, Eating Grass comprises five overlapping narratives, each representing different emotional states experienced throughout the day that are marked by the Muslim tradition of the five daily prayers. The film’s title references a remark made by Pakistan’s Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in 1974 amid the nuclear arms race with India, who said his people would have their own nuclear weapon even if it meant “eating grass.” While the title evokes a particular moment in Pakistan’s history, the film itself captures the ebb and flow of urban ... Famous street artists inspired by Klimt in live art show
LONDON.- Nine internationally-renowned street artists will produce Klimt-inspired masterpieces in front of a live audience in London’s Grosvenor Gardens, on Tuesday 21st August. Situated upon plinths, the artists will create new works resonant with the influence of Klimt in the square format, as part of the Vienna Tourist Board’s campaign to celebrate the 150th birthday of the famous Viennese artist. Groundbreaking comic artist, educator Kubert dies
NEWARK (AP).- Joe Kubert, a groundbreaking comic artist and educator best known for co-creating DC Comics' iconic Sgt. Rock character, has died. He was 85. Kubert died Sunday, according to the Kubert School in Dover, N.J., which he founded in 1976 to train and teach illustrators and artists. The school did not disclose a location or cause of death. Kubert co-created Sgt. Frank Rock, a World War II hero with a dangerously accurate shot, an uncanny ability to survive numerous war rounds and who led his patrols with a fierce sense of duty and courage. Kubert also co-created Tor, a prehistoric strongman, and reinvigorated Hawkman, who flew above New York City, fighting crime with a mace. 4 dead, about 20 injured in big Seoul fire near a 600-year-old palace
SEOUL (AP).- Fire officials in the South Korean capital say a large blaze at a construction site near a 600-year-old palace has killed at least four workers and injured about 20. They say Gyeongbok palace wasn't damaged by Monday's fire, which filled Seoul's central district with smoke. Seoul Metropolitan Fire and Disaster official Kim Byung-ro says the workers died after inhaling toxic smoke. One of the injured is in critical condition. Kim says the blaze may have started when a spark from construction at the site of a national art museum landed in combustible material. About 170 firefighters extinguished the fire in about an hour.
