Tennessee Workshop is Almost Full! Put a little joy in your brush and join me for my first Tennessee workshop September 21-23 in Germantown-Memphis, Tennessee. Using a loose, fresh approach and working with a transparent underpainting, we will paint from real flowers from 9 am to 4 pm each day. Open for beginners to those experienced in oils, as well as those who have only used other mediums in the past, we will learn to loosen the approach to the floral still life. I will limit the class to no more than 12, so students will get plenty of one on one time with the instructor. Click here to register! I'll share all my favorite tips with you for creating brilliant color on a transparent background, and methods for making your flowers look authentic and beautiful. Students are encouraged to take lots of photos and ask many questions, so you will take home the tools you need to create flowers paintings you will enjoy for years to come. I will begin class each day with a thorough and well explained demonstration. In the afternoons we will paint your favorite flowers together. Demo paintings from my Irving, TX, workshop last weekend. |

By painting flowers from life... I paint almost exclusively from fresh flowers. When I began painting I had the good fortune to have a fabulous teacher who shared my passion for florals and fruits. What I loved about her work was the way she embraced the faults and realities of what she painted. Her pears had tiny brown spots, her sunflowers always had a few wilted petals, her geranium leaves had tiny holes where hungry caterpillars had enjoyed brunch. All of her works were glorious with color and had a fresh from the garden feel. The lesson I took from her classes has never faded. Painting from reality is key if you want your viewer to make that instant connection with what is authentic. Mother Nature loves earth hues and grays and warm blends. Mother Nature grows her beautiful blossoms in dirt. Her roses bloom on knarled stems and are framed at times by withered and spotted leaves. Avoid perfection, but celebrate color, in your flower paintings. And always paint from life. The Challenge I challenge you to do two paintings of the same flower, one from a photo of that flower, and one from the real flower. Use any medium you like. Compare your two paintings and you will see that you have captured a bit more reality from your live model. The Prize Send me images of both of your paintings by August 30, clearly labeling which was from life, and which from a photo, with your name. In a few sentences, let me know what you learned. I will announce one winning submission on September 1. The prize will be attendance at one of my upcoming three day workshops - absolutely free, a $350 value! Be sure to include your name and address, and what medium you used to paint your image. Email both your images to: nancy@nancymedina.com I will share the best entries in my next newsletter!

Howie by Carlos Carlos created this portrait of Howard yesterday evening on the IPad while they sat on the couch together watching the Puglympics. I thought he did a particularly great job on those eyelashes. All four of them. On each eye. |
