LONDON.- Gagosian Gallery is presenting new paintings by Zeng Fanzhi, his first exhibition at the London gallery, following the Hong Kong exhibition last year. Zeng's aesthetic restlessness epitomizes the evolution of Chinese contemporary art in the post-1989 era, grappling with local history and tradition in the face of external influence and accelerated change. Since the beginning of his career, he has presented a succession of powerfully introspective subjects, from the haunting Hospital paintings to the visceral Meat paintings that juxtapose human subjects with butchered flesh; from the enigmatic Mask paintings to candid and startling close-up portraits; from intimate, existential still-lifes to depictions of pivotal Western cultural figures such as Francis Bacon, whose psychic portraits altered the status of the human figure in twentieth century art. Charged with an underlying psychological tension, Zeng's oeuvre reveals ... More

ZURICH.- Zurich’s electorate today approved the project to extend the Kunsthaus Zürich, with 53.9 percent voting in favour. From 2017, the building designed by David Chipperfield Architects will create space for a dynamic, regularly changing presentation of the collection of post-1960 art, attractive temporary exhibitions, and the new specialism of French painting and Impressionism. The result of the popular vote on 25 November 2012 is a major success for the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft – the association that runs the Kunsthaus Zürich. The voting figures – 53.9 percent for and 46.1 percent against – represent a clear majority for the idea of a museum for art and audiences in the 21st century. The extension will focus mainly on art created since the 1960s, and allows for a wide variety of exhibition formats – from new media, prints and drawings and photography to paintings, installations and sculptures & ... DALLAS (AP).- When the new Perot Museum of Nature and Science opens, visitors will be able to feel the ground shake beneath them in an earthquake simulation, program a robot to navigate a maze and even test their speed against a virtual Tyrannosaurus rex. "It's just going to be an incredible hands-on learning experience for people interested in nature and science," said Nicole G. Small, the museum's chief executive officer. The museum set to open Dec. 1 was named for billionaire former presidential candidate Ross Perot and his wife, Margot, after their five children made a $50 million gift in honor of them. Their daughter Carolyn Perot Rathjen, who chairs the museum's board of directors, said she and her siblings thought the donation would be a good way to honor their parents and say ... More

Bosco Sodi (Mexico City, 1970), Croatia I, 2011 (detail). Photo: Kevin Kunstadt, New York.

PONCE, PR.- The exhibition Bosco Sodi: Croatia opens at the Museo de Arte de Ponce on Sunday, December 2, at 5:00 pm. Artist Bosco Sodi (Mexico City, 1970) is known for his large monochromatic paintings, rich in texture, that explore materiality, color, and the beauty of raw nature. Bosco Sodi: Croatia consists of six large-format paintings whose cracked surface brings to mind a land burned by the sun and invites us to contemplate the complexities of the aesthetic experience. The exhibition is scheduled to run through March 4, 2013, and will be open to the general public from Wednesday to Monday from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm. Sodi’s work is an adventure into the unknown; it is driven by the unpredictable, the accidental, and the unique simplicity that is found in the natural landscape. With his hands, Sodi builds up layers of material endemic to nature—pigment, natural fibers, sawdust, and fragments of wood—on ... More

WIESBADEN.- In his work Naneci Yurdagül reflects, subtly and ironically, on social, cultural and political situations and their change, which always have traces of his own biography. One focus of his artistic engagement are topics on national and religious identity, migration, social exclusion, cultural appropriation and mistrust. They are constantly picked up and are treated critically, often in relation to current public debates, to intervene in the social discourse. His artistic expression includes almost all media such as performance, film, painting, photography, sculpture and installation, setting specific incentives. The Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden has organised the most complex institutional solo exhibition of the artist in Germany. For the exhibition in Wiesbaden Naneci Yurdagül conceived a round tour made up of several installations, focusing "exemplary" on the ... More

MUNICH.- Founded in 1969 by legendary producer Manfred Eicher at a moment when the status of contemporary music was being redefined across all genres, ECM (Edition of Contemporary Music) aimed to bring jazz, improvised, and written music out of the studio and into the world. Acoustically rich and transparent, ECM's productions set new standards in sonic complexity. Eicher's productions recorded some of the world's most extraordinary music and brought sound to a new dimension of spatial definition that set the label apart from its peers. ECM's enormous stable of artists includes Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Carla Bley, Meredith Monk, Marion Brown, Codona, and the Art Ensemble of Chicago, along with music from the New Series by composers from Perotin and Machaut to Arvo Pärt, György Kurtág, Giya ... Fredrik Noren, Broken Monochrome (detail).

COPENHAGEN.- The use and exploration of everyday objects have been an important foundation in Fredrik Norén’s artistic practice. By changing, distorting, adding or removing something from the ordinary, he seeks to question form and function, and how we define and value our surroundings. His works question the object, our interpretation of same and our humanity. The exhibition “Flawless Imperfections” at Galleri Lars Olsen constitutes the second part of a related exhibition exploring the broken. The first part “Break Room” is simultaneously showing at Galleri Thomas Wallner (SE) until 25 November 2012. By letting well known objects change shapes at the expense of their original function, questions are raised about how defects, scars and cracks can make something unique. The term “broken” is explored through the alteration of appearances and functions of everyday objects, thereby trans ... More

At renovated Iraq shrine, Shiites mark a holy day
KARBALA (AP).- It is the most impassioned day of the year for Shiite Muslims — Ashoura, when one of the faith's most revered figures, Imam Hussein, was martyred in battle. Hundreds of thousands of Shiites who flocked to his resplendent, gold-domed shrine to commemorate him Saturday found the site has radically changed. The shrine of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, is seeing its most extensive renovation since the 17th century. The construction is part of a push by Iraq's Shiite rulers to reinvigorate sacred shrines long neglected under former dictator Saddam Hussein, reflecting the community's steadily growing pride and power since the fall of their nemesis. Now worshippers find the shrines' minarets coated in gold and — in the most dramatic change — the sweeping plaza surrounding the mosque has been covered over with a series of domes to ... More

Olaf Rauh presents new series "Multiscan" at Galerie Richard in Paris
PARIS.- Galerie Richard opened the fourth solo exhibition of Olaf Rauh, entitled Multiscan, from the 24th November 2012 to the 12th January 2013 in Paris. Olaf Rauh, born in Leipzig in 1968, has quickly distinguished himself from the German photographers of the previous generation, because he does not use photography as an objective medium but rather to express an imaginary world in a real environment. In the new series Multiscan, we are witnesses of urban landscapes, habitats or community plazas which shine by their absence of residents, pedestrians and users. Thanks to electronic methods which differ from the previous series, Olaf Rauh introduces polychrome masses, some biomorphic, as the essence of apparent life. Other masses resembling smoke place the viewers in a dream mood. He transforms the space together with its perception. Effectively, the artist abolishes the ... More

Ipek Duben's most recent manifestations of an engagement with the female figure on view at Galeri Zilberman
ISTANBUL.- Galeri Zilberman is showing İpek Duben's solo show, titled 2012. The works in the exhibition are the most recent manifestations of an engagement with the female figure to reflect on the relationship between individual and society, which Duben has worked on since the 1980s with series such as Sherife (1981), Traces (1981), Register (1992) and Manuscript 1994. İpek Duben, a pioneer of research-based, socially engaged artistic practice with a feminist perspective, has been exploring issues of identity shaped by her experience of living in Turkey and the United States. Duben articulates a unique and layered artistic language in painting through an epistemological and ontological approach to the issues between westernization and tradition. The works in 2012 lead to a new path that open up a meditative space concerning human condition. The figure emerges as ... More

Tiffany silver jug in unidentifiable pattern could be the sleeper in Sterling's Dec. 5 auction
CLOSTER, NJ.- Sterling Associates’ outstanding first year as an auction house is in no small way attributable to owner Stephen D’Atri’s knowledge of the tri-state region, acquired from his many years as a full-time antiques dealer. Estates are D’Atri’s specialty, and six out of every seven days, he’s out on house calls, pursuing the fine and decorative art; furniture and Asian artworks for which his auctions have become well known. On Wednesday, Dec. 5, Sterling Associates will offer the finest estate consignments D’Atri and his team have secured over the past several months in a 400-lot Winter Fine Art & Antiques Auction.
