Bibliothèque nationale de France examines the life of the Rothschilds in the 19th century

A man looks at a painting displayed as part of the exhibition "The Rothschilds in France in the 19th century" at the Bibliotheque nationale de France (BnF) in Paris, two days ahead of the event's opening. The exhibition proposes to discover a wide variety of paintings, objets d’art, books, illustrations, photographs, documents from archives and collections of the Rothschild family, from the BnF and from several French institutions. AFP PHOTO FRANCOIS GUILLOT.

PARIS (AFP).- The exhibition focuses on the Rothschild story and the enlightened financiers of the 19th century. As the head of the family in France, James de Rothschild is at the centre of the display. Close to two hundred items are presented: manuscripts, outstanding paintings, archive photographs and documents. They illustrate the family’s way of life – their houses, works of art and vintage wines – as well as banking activities and family-owned industrial enterprises. The exhibition also shows how James de Rothschild, a philanthropist and cultural patron, also influenced economic and financial affairs in Europe. James, one of the five Rothschild brothers from Frankfurt, arrived in Paris in 1812. His talent in financial affairs soon made him one of the main protagonists in the world of high finance. Inspired by him, bankers from all over the world made Paris a financial hub and a prominent ... More

Argentine experts from the Natural Sciences Museum of La Plata find giant penguin fossils in Antarctica   Study delivers new insights into Rembrandt's etching techniques, many printed after his death   Former secretary to Imelda Marcos charged in New York with art conspiracy

Researcher Carolina Acosta poses with a model of the penguin. Photo: Natural Sciences Museum of La Plata.

BUENOS AIRES (AFP).- Argentine experts have discovered the fossils of a two-meter (6.5 foot) tall penguin that lived in Antarctica 34 million years ago. Paleontologists with the Natural Sciences Museum of La Plata province, where the capital Buenos Aires is located, said the remains were found on the icy southern continent. "This is the largest penguin known to date in terms of height and body mass," said researcher Carolina Acosta, who noted that the record had been held by emperor penguins, which reach heights of 1.2 meters (4 feet) tall. Lead researcher Marcelo Reguero added that the find, announced Tuesday, will "allow for a more intensive and complex study of the ancestors of modern penguins." In its next expedition to Antarctica, during the region's summer, the team will seek additional fossils of the newly discovered species, as well as information about its anatomy and how the giant penguin might have moved.Previous finds from prehistoric penguins indicated they ... Zelfportret met hoed met slappe rand en geborduurde mantel, Rembrandt van Rijn, 1631.

AMSTERDAM.- In January, seven new volumes will be published, showcasing the work of the most influential etcher of all time, Rembrandt van Rijn. Erik Hinterding (a curator at the Rijksmuseum) and Jaco Rutgers travelled the world to examine more than 18,000 impressions made from all 315 etchings produced by the artist between 1625 and 1665. In the course of their research, they made some unexpected discoveries about the etching techniques used by Rembrandt. As a result, we now have a much better appreciation of the master’s printing techniques, and we can determine, for example, whether an etching was made by Rembrandt himself, or in another studio much later. To mark the publication of the new Hollstein volumes, the Rijksmuseum is exhibiting 36 etchings by Rembrandt. These works offer an excellent sense of Rembrandt's etching techniques, while also helping to clarify the results of Erik Hinterding and Jaco Rutgers& ... More

NEW YORK (AP).- A former secretary to Imelda Marcos was charged Tuesday in New York with conspiracy to sell valuable artworks that disappeared during the collapse of Marcos' husband's regime in the Philippines. Vilma Bautista, 74, was indicted on charges of conspiracy, tax fraud and offering a false instrument for filing. Two of her nephews, Chaiyot Jansen Navalaksana and Pongsak Navalaksana, also were charged. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. said Bautista used false paperwork to sell a work from Claude Monet's "Water Lilies" series for $32 million in September 2010. "The integrity of the international art market must be protected," Vance said in a statement. "This indictment sheds light on what happened to major works of art missing for more than 25 years." Her attorney, Fran Hoffinger, said Bautista ... More

File photo of painter Zao Wou-ki posing in his Paris studio. Paris. AFP PHOTO FRANCOIS GUILLOT.

PARIS (AFP).- Zao Wou-ki, the abstract painter who has been described as China's greatest living artist, is at the centre of a bitter legal feud between his third wife and his son from a previous marriage. At the heart of a battle ripping the family apart lies the contested ownership of eight works worth millions of dollars. The son, Jia-Ling Zhao, also believes that Zao, who is 91 and has suffered from Alzheimer's disease since at least 2005, was moved to Switzerland in 2011 against his will. The Beijing-born artist left China for Paris before the Communist Party took over the country and has been a French citizen since 1964. "Zao had been in France since 1948, he is very attached to the country and never expressed any desire to leave it," said his son's lawyer, Jean-Philippe Hugot. His wife, Francoise Marquet, a former curator of the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, stands to inherit a greater part of the artist's estate than she would have done ... More

Zach Larsen and a local worker collect soil cores in ancient maize fields near Tikal.

PROVO, UT.- After emerging sometime before 1000 BC, the Maya rose to become the most advanced Pre-Columbian society in the Americas, thriving in jungle cities of tens of thousands of people, such as the one in Guatemala's Tikal National Park. But after reaching its peak between 250 and 900 AD, the Maya civilization began to wane and exactly why has been an enduring mystery to scientists. Writing in the Nov.-Dec. issue of the Soil Science of America Journal (SSSA-J), an interdisciplinary team led by Richard Terry, a Brigham Young University soil scientist, now describes its analysis of maize agriculture in the soils of Tikal. Not surprisingly, the study uncovered evidence for major maize production in lowland areas, where erosion is less likely and agriculture was presumably more sustainable for this community of an estimated 60,000 people. But the team also discovered evidence of erosion ... More

Brooklyn Museum acquires Neoclassical portrait by Colonial Puerto Rican master José Campeche   Auction of rare books at Ketterer Kunst in Hamburg yields 540,000% return on Die Brücke artist catalog   Local collectors donate work by acclaimed sculptor David Smith to Columbus Museum of Art

José Campeche (Puerto Rican, 1751-1809). Doña María de los Dolores Gutiérrez del Mazo y Pérez, circa 1796. Oil on canvas, 34 x 25 in. (86 x 64 cm). Brooklyn Museum, Gift of Lilla Brown in memory of her husband, John W. Brown, by exchange, 2012.45.

BROOKLYN, NY.- An extremely rare Neoclassical portrait by the mixed-race Puerto Rican painter José Campeche has been purchased by the Brooklyn Museum. Campeche painted Doña María de los Dolores Gutiérrez del Mazo y Pérez in the island's capital of San Juan about 1796 to commemorate Doña María's marriage to Don Benito Pérez, a lieutenant in the Spanish royal navy. The painting, which has never been published or publicly exhibited, remained with the sitter's descendants until 2012, when it was officially accessioned by the Museum's Board of Trustees on October 18. The work was acquired with funds from the proceeds of the sale of Vasily Vereshchagin's Crucifixion by the Romans (1887), which was sold last November at auction to benefit the Brooklyn Museum's Acquisitions Fund. Doña María de los Dolores was born in 1775 in Alicante, Spain. ... More

PHILADELPHIA (AP).- A document signed by President Abraham Lincoln ordering Union blockades of Confederate ports, marking the official start of the Civil War, is for sale. The Raab Collection in Philadelphia said Tuesday it is selling the document, which it calls one of the most important in American history. The asking price is $900,000. Lincoln's proclamation is dated April 19, 1861 — a week after the first shots of the conflict were fired at South Carolina's Fort Sumter. After the Civil War ended in 1865, the U.S. Supreme Court in an opinion ascribed Lincoln's April 19 blockade order as the official beginning of the war. "This action was bold and with great risk," said Nathan Raab, vice president of The Raab Collection. "Lincoln was aware that the blockading of ports was an act of war." Some of the president's cabinet objected ... More

New sequence of Adam Silverman's highly acclaimed pots on view at Edward Cella Art + Architecture
LOS ANGELES, CA.- Edward Cella Art + Architecture is presenting New Pots and Sculptures by Los Angeles based Adam Silverman. This exhibition features a new sequence of Silverman’s highly acclaimed pots, alongside small to medium scale sculptures. New to this body of work are a series of large format sculptural pieces intended to extend the fundamental tenets of the artist’s practice as a potter towards their plastic realization as freestanding, large scale, three dimensional works. Silverman’s experimental practice as a potter is driven by his interest in the catalytic and elemental nature of his medium. The artist seeks an unlikely marriage of the formal and the primordial, transforming raw materials through a practice that invokes both the discipline of design and the exploratory investigations of organic risk. New Pots and Sculptures represents a new chapter of material ... More

El Anatsui sculptural tapestry hung in Bloch Lobby at Nelson-Atkins Museum
KANSAS CITY, MO.- One of the largest and most complex tapestry-like sculptures ever created by Ghanian artist El Anatsui has been hung in Bloch Lobby at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The 350-pound, 39-foot-wide, 26-foot-high Dusasa I debuted at the 2007 Venice Biennale and entered the museum’s collection in early 2008. The title comes from two Ewe words, du and sasa, meaning a fusion of disparate elements on a monumental scale. “Dusasa I reminds us that for today’s African artists, the traditional and contemporary are not separate, but entwined, and that art creation cannot be dictated by the availability or lack of conventional mediums,” said Nii Quarcoopome, curator of African art. “El Anatsui’s creation epitomizes the boundless imagination and inventiveness of 21st-century Africa artists.” To construct Dusasa I, Anatsui collected thousands of recycled aluminum ...
