Driving Miles & Miles for Flowers

Holiday Hydrangeas and Rose Hips is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, the fruit of my latest sojourn to the Central Market *insert sound of trumpets* flower shop. This trip, I had an absolutely perfectly legitimate reason to be buying dozens of new flowers, since I had a student coming to the studio the very next day.

I was on my way to the cash register with my arms loaded with lovely blossoms when I caught sight of a bunch of winter white hydrangeas and red rose hips a customer had wrapped in brown paper on the counter. My heart went pitty pat as I quickly exchanged a few selections for this new bunch of flowers, with some nice greenery for holiday backup. My treasures didn't even raise an eyebrow on the checkout gal at Central Market *insert sound of trumpets*, where the staff is accustomed to elite clientele unlike yours truly, who happily digs through the Used Flower Bin every week at Tom Thumb.

A Stroll Down Memory Lane

I've been hard at work in the studio on a new series of paintings at the Dallas Arboretum. People ask where I find inspiration to paint flowers in the dreary Texas winter months - when I'm not loading my shopping cart with store bought blossoms, a trip to the Dallas Arboretum always wakes up the muses.

Crepe Myrtle Lane was fun to create, and began with transparent oils in a watercolor type wash. When I began painting in earnest, I worked exclusively in water color. I love when opportunities to intersect painting styles happen like this. Back then, I traded my paintings to help pay rent and buy furniture and other necessities while trying to make ends meet with a $32,000 per year job in Santa Barbara, California. Paintings, a full time magazine job, and four roommates were usually just enough to make sure my soul dog Buddy and I had enough to eat and a roof over our heads. We didn't need much, besides groceries and paints - the beautiful thing about Southern California is the beach is free!

Paint With Me in the Texas Hill Country!

Registration is now open for my new workshop in the Texas Hill Country. My April 2012 workshop in Fredericksburg, Texas, has been moved back a few weeks since the original dates fell on Easter weekend (thanks for mentioning this Deb!). I have an important date with Mom for Easter, and I am sure you want to spend time with family, too. Join me for the new dates, three full days of painting April 27, 28 and 29, 2012, from 8 am to 4 pm daily at the Good Art Company Art School.

We will focus on loosening the approach to still life and on enjoying the spontaneity of nature. Working from fresh flowers, I'll teach the basics of composition and how to create brilliant color while working from a transparent background. I'll share some simple methods for making your flower paintings look authentic and beautiful.

Registration is now open for the workshop and you can find details about how to sign up on my Web Site. I hope you will join me in this beautiful Hill Country town. Besides the historic buildings, the shopping, the restaurants and golfing, there is a great pastry shop I can direct you to for oven fresh raspberry creme cheese danish!
