METZ.- This vast multidisciplinary exhibition provides an instant view of every field of creativity during this year of the First World War. It asks what such a narrow, precise context as a single year might mean for creative activity, while avoiding the pitfalls of expectations and assumptions as to the nature of wartime art. 1917 was a year of extreme diversity in artistic production. The exhibition sets out to convey this by illustrating artists' various positions relative to the battlefront and the multiple forms their work took. Alongside established artists who drew inspiration more or less directly from world affairs were the amateur artists who felt the need to respond to the trials of war through creative expression, not least in the trench art – objects made from shells and weapons – an ensemble of which is one of the highlights of the exhibition. Equally important are the war artists ... More

Kunsthaus Zürich presents first exhibition in Switzerland dedicated to the work by Adrian Zingg   Sotheby's launches gallery in Hong Kong with Modern Masters series, Corot to Monet exhibition   Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park opens exclusive Beverly Pepper retrospective

Anton Graff, Adrian Zingg, 1796/99. Oil on canvas, 160 x 98 cm. Kunstmuseum St. Gallen.

ZURICH.- From 25 May to 12 August 2012 the Kunsthaus Zürich presents Switzerland’s first museum exhibition devoted to the work of Adrian Zingg (1734-1816). Zingg is one of the most important representatives of landscape between the European Enlightenment and Pre-Romanticism in Dresden. He explored the countryside around Dresden and produced numerous views of what has since become known as the Saxon and Bohemian Switzerland. His large-format sepia plates influenced an entire generation of artists, right through to Caspar David Friedrich, while his choice of motifs and interpretation of landscape left its mark on souvenir production in the early days of tourism. Born in St. Gallen, Adrian Zingg served his apprenticeship with Johann Rudolph Holzhalb in Zurich and Johann Ludwig Aberli in Berne. After spending seven years as collaborator of Johann Georg Wille in Paris he moved to Dresden, where he remained active for five de ... More

LONDON.- A masterpiece by Swiss artist Arnold Böcklin depicting a dramatic retelling of a story from Homer’s ‘Odyssey’ is to headline Sotheby’s sale of European Paintings in London on Monday, 11 June 2012. Odysseus and Polyphemus, painted in 1896, is redolent of the fin-de-siècle spirit that enveloped Europe as a new century dawned. Estimated at £800,000-1,200,000 (€970,000-1,460,000), the oil on panel comes to the market from a European Private Collection and is being offered for sale at auction for the first time. The provenance of the work can be traced back directly to the artist, and the painting has featured in numerous exhibitions and monographs on Böcklin. Odysseus and Polyphemus depicts the climax of the story of Odysseus and Polyphemus as recounted by Homer in Book 9 of his ‘Odyssey’, when Odysseus and his men flee the enraged Cyclops they have just blinded. By: Donna Bryson, Associated Press

JOHANNESBURG (AP).- A lawyer for South Africa's president broke down in tears Thursday as he tried to convince three judges that the display of a portrait that depicts the president's genitals is unlawful. The three South Gauteng High Court judges called a recess after the emotional display. President Jacob Zuma is asking the High Court to issue an order that display of the now-defaced painting violates his constitutional right to dignity. The gallery and the artist counter that freedom of expression, also protected by the constitution, is at stake. Two men had walked into the Goodman Gallery Tuesday and defaced the portrait with paint, saying later they were acting to defend Zuma. The gallery then removed the painting and closed indefinitely. Still, the case is being closely watched because it raises important constitutional issues in a new ... More

Chinese architect Wang Shu. AP Photo.

By: Joe McDonald, AP Business Writer

BEIJING (AP).- When architect Wang Shu accepts his field's richest prize in a ceremony Friday at the seat of China's legislature, a symbolic second winner will be waiting in the background — Hyatt Hotels. The Pritzker Architecture Prize has special resonance for communist leaders who want to promote China as a global cultural power. Receiving it made Wang a celebrity in China. Until now, the 49-year-old had been little known outside architecture circles. The $100,000 prize is sponsored by the Hyatt Foundation, a separate entity from the business, Hyatt Hotels, which has no role in picking the winner. Still, the company's link to promoting Chinese culture abroad is a marketer's dream and could give the Hyatt name a boost with status-conscious government officials and some of the public. "It's bound to have a positive impact for them," said Alistair Nicholas, a specialist in corporate image who is executive vice president for Asia of public relations firm Weber Shandwick. "Ju ... Alexej von Jawlensky, Stillleben mit Heiligenbild und Blumentopf, 350,000-500,000 GBP.

LONDON.- On 27th and 30th of May MacDougall’s will offer an exceptional selection of rare Russian masterpieces, many of which have never before appeared at auction. Oil paintings by Petrov-Vodkin are exceedingly rare to appear on the market and few works of such significance as Still Life. Apples and Eggs remain in private hands. LONDON.- One of the classic works of the Bauhaus school – currently the subject of an exhibition at London’s Barbican Centre – is to be auctioned at Bonhams Prints Sale in London on 11 July. It is estimated at £70,000- 100,000 - a reflection both of its importance and rarity. ‘Meistermappe des Staatlichen Bauhauses’ (Masters' Portfolio of the Staatliches Bauhaus) consists of eight works by masters or assistant teachers at the school including Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and Lionel Feininger. Issued in 1923, it was published in an edition of 100 and sold to raise money at a time when rampant inflation in Germany had badly eroded the value of the school’s funding. Bauhaus was established in Weimar after the First World War with the express aim of using art and design to transform modern life in the post-war, post Imperial era in Germany. It is now synonymous with a particular style and look but ... More

EDINBURGH.- A spectacular timepiece designed by Dr John C Taylor OBE is going on display in the Discoveries Gallery at the National Museum of Scotland. The 3.3 metre Midsummer Chronophage, which has no hands or numbers and is inspired by the idea that everyone experiences time differently, will be on display from Thursday 24 May 2012 until Sunday 13 January 2013. Dr Taylor’s clock is controlled by a Chronophage, which is a mythical beast that eats time. It slowly opens its jaws for 59 seconds and then snaps shut on the 60th – chews the minute - swallows it. Then, you can never get it back… Dr Taylor explains: ‘It takes a dyslexic inventor to produce a clock without hands that that also plays games with you. Once you have seen the Chronophage all other clocks will seem rather boring - all they do is tell the time. This one surprises you, sometimes stopping, running fast or backwards as it tells relative t ... More

Colombian artist Doris Salcedo presents two new, large-scale works at White Cube Mason's Yard
LONDON.- For her exhibition at White Cube Mason's Yard, Colombian artist Doris Salcedo will present two new, large-scale works. 'Plegaria Muda' (2008-10), situated in the lower ground floor gallery, is a major installation consisting of a number of individual sculptures that evoke a mass memorial or collective burial site. In the ground floor gallery Salcedo will show an intensely fragile sculpture entitled 'A Flor de Piel' (2012); a shroud composed of sutured rose petals. Salcedo is well known for her politically engaged work that attempts to bear witness to specific acts of violence. Work on 'Plegaria Muda', loosely translated as 'mute prayer', began in 2004 in Los Angeles when Salcedo started researching the violent life of young people in the ghettoes of the city. Three years later, the installation took more direct shape after the bodies of 1,500 young men were found in Colombia. ... More

Highly anticipated first volume of the complete catalogue of works by John Baldessari out now
NEW YORK, NY.- The pioneering conceptual artist John Baldessari (b. 1931) began his career as a painter in the 1950s, but in the subsequent decades he expanded his practice in a new and groundbreaking direction by juxtaposing texts with found photography or appropriated images. These texts questioned the nature of art and the art-viewing experience, suggesting new meanings for the images they accompanied. This interaction of words and images remained a critical aspect of Baldessari’s work, even as he branched into other media, such as site- specific installations, drawings, video, sculpture, prints, and multiples. The first of a projected four-volume set, this lavishly illustrated book features about 500 works and chronicles an important shift in Baldessari’s thinking during these formative years. Included are such landmark works as the Cremation Project ... More

Exhibition of works by Saul Fletcher opens at Alison Jacques Gallery
LONDON.- For his second exhibition with Alison Jacques Gallery, in advance of his works being presented at the 30th Sao Paulo Biennale this autumn, Saul Fletcher has created a body of photographs that offer a glimpse into his psychological landscape. Fragments from the artist's life are pieced together through intimate images of installations meticulously constructed directly onto his studio wall. Fletcher transforms everyday objects into melancholic sculptures and integrates them within layers of flaking paint, as tender, almost hermetic compositions emerge through a surface that serves as both his canvas and stage. The fragile and ephemeral state of Fletcher's subjects relay a sense of intimacy akin with that of a lost relic, whilst the modest scale of his photographs entice the viewer to peer into these extended metaphors. Remnants from previous arrangements are ... More
