KABUL.- Statues are displayed at the Kabul National Museum in Kabul on May 28, 2012. About 70 percent of the museum?s 100,000-piece collection was looted by mujaheddin fighters during the civil war of the 1990s and exhibits were damaged by rocket fire. The Taliban, who in 2001 destroyed the giant carved Buddhas in Bamiyan, central Afghanistan, also smashed the museum?s pre-Islamic Buddha figures, deeming them un-Islamic. AFP PHOTO / Aref Karimi.

LONDON.- This summer, as Britain celebrates the Queen?s Diamond Jubilee, the Royal Academy of Arts marks the occasion with a series of displays and events. Peter Greenham?s Study for a Portrait of Her Majesty the Queen (1964) has gone on show in the RA?s entrance hall, while displays in the John Madejski Fine Rooms celebrate the long-standing connection between the monarchy and the Royal Academy from its foundation in 1768 to the present day. The Queen?s Artists features a selection of paintings, drawn from the Royal Academy?s Collection, by Royal Academicians elected during the early part of the Queen?s reign. The display in the Reynolds Room and Council Room includes works by Jean Cooke, Frederick Gore and Ruskin Spear. Subjects range from Richard Eurich?s fanciful reminiscence of a summer spent in Whitby in 1911 to Carel Weight?s depiction of people observing the two minute silence on Remembrance Sunday. Lucian Freud (1922-2011), Head of a Greek Man. Oil on panel, 11.1/4 x 9.3/4in. (28.4 x 24.8cm.). Painted in 1946. Estimate: £1,500,000-2,000,000. Photo: Christie's Images Ltd 2012.

LONDON.- On 27 June, Christie's Evening Auction of Post-War & Contemporary Art will present a selection of important works by two of the greatest British figurative painters of the twentieth century. A major highlight of the auction is the extremely rare Study for Self-Portrait painted by Francis Bacon in 1964 (estimate upon request). It is a poignant and exceptionally intimate painting by Francis Bacon, which marries the artist?s face to the figure of friend and fellow painter, Lucian Freud. It represents one of only twelve, floor-length self-portraits ever to be realised by Francis Bacon, four of which are now held in international museum collections. It is the only to undertake the almost devotional act of conflating the two artist?s bodies. Great friendship is the theme of another extraordinary work to be offered at Christie's. Head of a Greek Man, is an early painting by Lucian Freud dating from 1946. It comes from the ... More

Cleaning Mona Lisa not only teaches the neglected lessons of art restoration, but the allows the reader to clean some of the most famous paintings from around the world with the swipe of a finger.

NEW YORK, NY.- Art historian and former Travel Channel Host Lee Sandstead partnered with Apple Design Award winning app studio, Tapity, to release an innovative reading experience on the iPad. Built on top of Apple’s new iBooks Author platform, Cleaning Mona Lisa interweaves videos and gorgeous interactive paintings with the narrative to take readers on a journey to discover why classical art work such as Mona Lisa is not nearly as impressive as it used to be and what can be done to restore it. When art historian Lee Sandstead first saw the world’s most famous painting—Mona Lisa—he was…to put it very gently…underwhelmed. As he recalls: “I sat there looking at this very small and dark painting behind three inches of bullet-proof glass scratching my head in puzzlement. Where were her eyebrows? Why is she so yellow?” It was this utter disappointment that took him on a decade-long search through museums across the world to uncover Mona Lis ... More

JISH, ISRAEL (AP).- Two villages in the Holy Land's tiny Christian community are teaching Aramaic in an ambitious effort to revive the language that Jesus spoke, centuries after it all but disappeared from the Middle East. The new focus on the region's dominant language 2,000 years ago comes with a little help from modern technology: an Aramaic-speaking television channel from Sweden, of all places, where a vibrant immigrant community has kept the ancient tongue alive. In the Palestinian village of Beit Jala, an older generation of Aramaic speakers is trying to share the language with their grandchildren. Beit Jala lies next to Bethlehem, where the New Testament says Jesus was born. And in the Arab-Israeli village of Jish, nestled ... More

ALBANY (AP).- Nearly 150 years after the last fusillade of the Civil War, historians, authors and museum curators are still finding new topics to explore as the nation commemorates the sesquicentennial of America's bloodiest conflict. Even the long-accepted death toll of 620,000, cited by historians since 1900, is being reconsidered. In a study published late last year in Civil War History, Binghamton University history demographics professor J. David Hacker said the toll is actually closer to 750,000. "That number just sat there — 620,000 — for a century," said Lesley Gordon, a professor at the University of Akron and editor of the journal, a 57-year-old publication considered the pre-eminent publication in its field. Now, that figure "doesn't feel right anymore," said Gordon. The buzz Hacker's new ... More

BERLIN.- The first solo exhibition in Germany by the British artist Haroon Mirza has a strikingly cryptic title: --{}{}{} {}--{}{}{}{}--{}. As the typographical equivalent of a wave form, it translates sound into a visual representation, thus referring to the work that Mirza developed especially for the Project Space of the Ernst Schering Foundation. The artist uses the shadow gaps that are typical for exhibition spaces as a starting point for creating a new light and sound composition. Haroon Mirza’s artworks revolve around the complex relationship between visuality and acoustics and unfold in a continuous loop as audio-visual compositions in space. In his acoustic assemblages, he uses found, culturally coded objects which he separates from their original function, turning them into triggers for sounds that form precise, self-generating compositions. These soundscapes are experienced ... More

First retrospective in a German museum of photographer Lewis Baltz on view at Kunstmuseum Bonn
BONN.- Kunstmuseum Bonn is showing the first retrospective in a German museum of an American photographer who today is legendary. Already in the early 1970s, Lewis Baltz, born 1945 in Newport Beach, California, arrived on the scene with photos that launched him as an essential groundbreaker on the way to (new) art photography. At the age of 26 with “Tract Houses”, Baltz had his first solo exhibition at the famous New York gallery of Leo Castelli, and remained within its program till the early 1990s. Baltz (as well as Hilla and Bernd Becher) took part in the 1975 epochal exhibition “New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-altered Landscape”. In view of his clear formal vocabulary, Baltz was initially seen as a documentarist. However, since 1986 and his residency in Paris and Venice, his photography has, at least at first glance, radically changed. Instead of a copious ... More

Marjorie Schiele Prize Award winner announced
CINCINNATI, OH.- On Friday May 4, 2012, the Marjorie Schiele Prize jury assembled in New York City to deliberate the work of the 375 entrants and fifty-five finalists for the $25,000 inaugural award. Given the overall sophistication and high quality of such a large number of international participants, it took the jurors several hours to narrow the field to just three. Following more deliberations, the jury found the work of artist Sarah Vanderlip—a series of graphite and silvered Mylar drawings on paper entitled Drawings for Sculpture of Buildings that use architectural renderings as fresh points for departure—the most compelling and accomplished among this select group of finalists; and awarded her the Prize. Vanderlip earned her MFA in Sculpture from the Yale School of Art. Recent solo exhibitions of her work have been on display at Shoshana Wayne Gallery (2012, Los ... More

Crowds gather for Golden Gate Bridge celebration
SAN FRANCISCO (AP).- Thousands of people flocked to San Francisco's waterfront and onto Golden Gate Bridge on Sunday to celebrate the famous span's 75th birthday. The daylong party attracted pleasure boats, tug boats and other vessels to the water as people on shore enjoyed a number of events stretching from Fort Point south of the bridge to Pier 39 along The Embarcadero. Many walked and biked across the bridge before capping the day by watching a fireworks display over the city's enduring symbol. The bridge was shrouded in fog during part of the day, but skies were clear by nightfall for the 18 minute-long fireworks show. "It's such an iconic structure, depending on the day or the hour, it just looks like it changes continuously," San Francisco resident Daniel Sutphin said as he walked through the Fort Point area with his wife and their three young children.
