Sunflower Daisy Diva, 18X18 Purchase InformationLights, Camera, Snoring Pugs! My first ever sunflower demo video Sunflower Daisy Divas was my first attempt at a painting demonstration on video this week, courtesy of cameraman hubby and my four studio pugs who provided background snoring and snuffling sound effects. Hubby is working on the final movie edit, while all four pugs wonder anxiously who will end up on the cutting room floor, since I did insist that each of them be introduced and their specific studio roles and tasks explained. The loudest snoring award while mama was filming went to Howard Pee Pugpants (no surprise there, with his big ole gorilla nose), and the most determined to trip mama while she was doing a demo on camera award went to Cheesy Man Java, who decided dinner an hour early was important enough to interrupt any video in his house. (Java was our first pug, so, as I often tell him, technically in this house, we are ALL his guests...). I've already seen the first clip of the painting demo video, and it was terrifying on a par with Jaws or the first Freddy Krueger movie, with a bright overhead light shining straight down on my face and the high def camera three inches from my nose. Rest assured I'll be exercising executive producer privileges to demand air brushing, my own hairdresser, and soft romantic lighting for Scene 2. (More wine my cherie amour?) While we wait with bated breath to see what might be the first epic flower painting demo with a pug in it ever before produced on the Pug Planet, here's the movie trailer/teaser footage for you below. Enjoy! I promise to keep you posted on this new twist in life at Flower Mound Studio.

Orange Parfait White Rose Bouquet 16X20 Oil on Linen Board Purchase Information Orange Parfait White Roses Step by Step Sometimes the best gifts come in plain brown wrappers - I found an exquisite bunch of extra large creamy white roses at my corner grocery store last week. These beauties were in the manager's bargain bucket by the checkout counter, reduced to $4.99 (according to the bright orange tag). They were as nice as any of the $3 per stem lovelies I usually purchase from Central Market *sound of harps* and yet they were a fraction of the cost. They were even de-thorned! It was my great fortune that we needed cheese and butter at the market, and I came home with flowers instead. Come to think of it, I never did pick up that cheese and butter. I've been sharing quite a few new step by step paintings on my art blog this month, so be sure to visit and take a peek - Enjoy! Step 1 - the underpainting... Step 2 - getting in the greens... Step 3 - beginning the opaques... Step four - time for a closeup! Step 5 - almost fini! |
Season Finale White Roses 11X14 Oil on Linen Board Purchase Information Season Finale Roses - My Fading Stars Season Finale Roses was the last painting I squeezed from that gorgeous bunch of white blossoms purchased from the Kroger bargain bin last weekend. I had already stuffed little bits of cotton balls to open up the rose petals extra wide (shhh, that's a secret!). But these beauties opened up completely within 2 days and were ready for painting. I was so transfixed I found myself bumping into furniture when I would walk by them, instead of watching where I was going. I often wonder if being easily distracted is the nature of all artists, or just a special affliction all my own. I still can't understand hubby's shock and awe when he discovered I had filled up the new IMac hard drive in less than 12 months with my flower reference photos. I'm not worried, since I made it abundantly clear I NEED all those photos. Fortunately, they invented something called Time Machine where I was able to move all my Coronado cottage photos and Dallas Arboretum tulip pictures for safekeeping. Season Finale studio peek... |
Hannah Medina, my new baby girl It's official! We've adopted! It's official - we have a new baby girl in Flower Mound Studio this week! Carlos and I have decided to adopt our little foster pug, Hannah, aka, the Sweet Potato, to celebrate one year as her foster parents this month. Every morning when she wakes up, Hannah wraps her paws around my neck and rubs her face on mine. I think it's love, although Carlos thinks she's just washing her wrinkles. Plus, Hannah is the only foster pug I've ever had who adores our special cheesy pug Java, although Java finds this a little confusing, since he declared his unabashed love for his brother Howie years ago. I've been fostering pugs for rescue for over 5 years now, and there is always the temptation to keep these little ones, but Hannah's special needs and her wonderful personality really found a place in my heart. Hannah has a paralyzed larynx, and though she lives a full, active life, she will always have to have special care taken to stay cool and not too excited. She sounds like a little frog when she barks, and she loves it here at the Medina Foster Home for Wayward Pugs. Making this her official furever home feels like the right thing to do. Every home needs a little Sweet Potato and four pugs IS a nice round number! |

Book Now! This is peak tourist season for Fredericksburg!
Put a little joy in your brush and join me for my 3-day workshop in historic Fredericksburg, Texas, July 6, 7 and 8, 2012. A Day in Provence - Painting Flowers in Oils will be held at The Good Art Company studio gallery in historic Fredericksburg, Texas, from 8 am to 3 pm each day. The school is located on a resort property near downtown and overlooks rolling hills and cabins and is just a little bit of heaven all in itself!
The blue vase in the hydrangea painting above was one that first made its debut in my Fredericksburg workshop a few months ago - thanks to Linda for lending us this blue beauty, and thanks to Debra for finding one just like it on Ebay for me after! Best of all, I can blame Debra for my newly acquired Ebay surfing habit.
I've scheduled class each day so that we can start a bit earlier, and end a bit earlier, leaving some time to shop in charming downtown Fredericksburg. I plan to visit Bath Junkie and the Linen Store and Dogologie (of course!) and best of all hubby won't be there to rein in my spree!

Open for beginners to those experienced in oils, we will focus on loosening your approach to the floral still life. I'll share all my favorite tips for creating brilliant color and methods for making your flowers look authentic and beautiful. Students in my classes are encouraged to take lots of photos and ask many questions, so you can take home the tools you will need to create flower paintings you will love for many years to come.
I will begin class each day with a thorough and well explained demonstration. In the afternoons, we'll paint your favorite flowers together. Using transparent colors as a base, I'll show you how to create powerful color notes that will make your flowers sing. Students will receive a supply list shortly after registration.

Click Here for November Class Information An Unexpected Phone Call... My new classes are filling up so quickly my head has been spinning just a bit, so imagine my relief when I got a phone call and an offer of help from a truly unexpected source! Traci at La Quinta in Las Colinas, Texas, noticed my workshop listings at the Dallas Arboretum. Since this was her former employer, she said she took notice and called to offer a special Nancy Medina Workshop Room Rate for all my students taking classes at the Jaycee Park Center for the Arts in Irving, Texas! Even better, the La Quinta offers free shuttle to and from the airport, and to and from class at the Jaycee Park Center in Irving! I asked if Tom Bodette would be leaving a light on for me, but she assured me that's the other establishment down the street. I can't tell you how many times I've had to navigate through a strange city alone, looking for a workshop in a rental car with my brushes and turp sloshing around. Let's just say the invention of GPS has been a real game changer. I'm tickled pink for all the ladies who travel to my workshops from other states - and countries - who can now take advantage of this convenient service! Thanks so much Traci! I'll save you a donut! |
Nice things my students say about me... It's a real honor to have students who travel from across the US to study with me, and even students who have come from foreign countries - I still have to pinch myself every now and then, since I only started teaching a year ago at the Dallas Arboretum. Teaching art is something I love to do, and my goal for every class is to share everything I know. I encourage my students to ask lots of questions and take lots of photos so they take home the tools they need to create beautiful flower paintings for years to come. Here are a few of the nice things my students have shared after taking my classes: Nancy your workshop today was absolutely marvelous. It was a very, very special day for me. Total joy and peace! Thanks for such an inspiring day. I have studied all over the world and you are the best instructor I have ever had. You are something else! - Alice I have applied your technique to my roses and entered it in an art show. It sold first thing! - Bobbie It was so much fun being able to watch you paint yesterday...I learned a lot from your demonstration and am feeling motivated to get to work on some projects I've had shelved for a number of years - and I appreciate the encouragement! - Sean I have just arrived home to Mexico and I really want to thank you for your wonderful workshop. Thank you for sharing with us your painting process and giving us all your tips and shortcuts. But most of all, thanks forgiving us that very warm welcome and for being so patient with your big smile and your wonderful personality. That workshop weekend happens to be one of the most joyful experiences I have ever had in my life. - Betty-Durango, Mexico My wife, Carolyn, and I just returned from Fredericksburg, TX, where she participated in what she enthusiastically declared to be the most productive and instructive art workshop ever. We drove for fourteen hours to get there and I thought that we would have been the most distant of attendees. I was wrong. Nancy Medina, the extraordinary artist who conducted the workshop, had to close the class out well ahead of time because the demand was so high, and we met ladies who came from New Jersey, Durango, Mexico, and other distant locations for the opportunity to learn from a true master. They all expressed, repeatedly and with fervor, their excitement at the way their canvasses came to life under Nancy's tutelage. I personally observed the amazing improvement that my wife experienced and I delighted at the virtual explosion of her spirit and joy. What a fantastic return on investment of time and travel. I would have happily driven my lady across the continent and back to achieve that result. - Emory |
