Paul Cézanne, The Boy in the Red Waistcoat, ca. 1888/90. Oil on canvas, 79.5 x 64 cm. Foundation E.G. Bührle Collection, Zurich.
ZURICH.- On 28 May 2012 the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft signed an agreement with the Foundation E.G. Bührle Collection setting out the terms under which some 190 paintings and sculptures are to be made available on long-term loan to the Kunsthaus Zürich. The internationally renowned collection of the industrialist Emil Bührle (1890-1956) is to be exhibited from 2017 in the extension to the Kunsthaus Zürich designed by David Chipperfield. This will enable the Kunsthaus to stage the largest assembly of French Impressionist painting in Europe, outside Paris. The new agreement between the Foundation E.G. Bührle Collection and the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft replaces the agreement in principle drawn up in February 2006 and sets the seal on the intent, declared by the parties at the time, to make the artworks from the Bührle Collection accessible to the public at large in the newly expanded Kunsthaus. PARIS.- Sotheby's will be offering a highly selective sale of African and Oceanic Art for auction in Paris on June 12. The 137-lot sale showcases several remarkably coherent ensembles: two private collections from the U.S. those of Oliver & Pamela Cobb and Thomas G. B. Wheelock (art of Burkina Faso); an ensemble of African masks with powerful aesthetic appeal; works from Congo and New Ireland; and a number of pieces fresh to the market. Oliver Cobb was initiated to art as a boy by his grandfather Albert Gallatin, a renowned collector of Egyptian art. The history of these works is linked not just to the prestigious collectors who have owned them on both sides of the Atlantic, but also to their importance within the traditional ... Also included are a series of enamel on acrylic drawings. The exhibition, the artists first major solo show in San Francisco, will be on view through June 30, 2012. ATLANTA (AP).- Fifty years ago, a group of 106 influential cultural and civic leaders from Atlanta traveled to Europe to visit famous museums and demonstrate the ascendant southern city's commitment to culture. The Atlanta area's population in 1962 had recently hit a million people, but political and business leaders worried the growth wouldn't continue if the city didn't improve its museums and venues for theater and music. The city's cultural development would be altered forever by the trip, but in ways that had to do more with its tragic end. The group was on its way home June 3 when its chartered Air France plane crashed on takeoff at Orly Field in Paris, killing all but two flight attendants. It was the worst single plane crash at the time. "The community was just in shock," ... More

For this exhibition, he has created a series of twelve red abstract paintings featuring images of the May 1968 Paris riots, which began with student protests and progressed to a general workers strike, bringing the entire nation to a standstill. The series is organized around a sequence of images taken from the introduction of Gordon Carr's book The Angry Brigade and is embellished with pages depicting aspects of the conflict from a Paris Match of the period. WASHINGTON (AP).- After the last tourists leave the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem's Old City at nightfall, a little-known but centuries-old tradition unfolds at one of Christianity's holiest sites. Clerics from the three largest denominations represented in the church Greek Orthodox, Armenian and Roman Catholic gather each night for special prayers reserved for the men who take care of the site where Christians believe Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected. Starting at midnight, clerics and monks sing and pray for hours, their chants echoing through the cavernous chambers of the Holy Sepulcher's darkest rooms. "The door of the church is closed, no pilgrims, no tourists, it's very quiet," said Father Isidoros Fakitsas, the superior of the Greek Orthodox ... More
