Hail and the Chihuly glass exhibit
A Dallas Arboretum Stroll

The stars were aligned this month for my Dallas Arboretum flower painting workshop on June 9 - while my students and I painted California purple asters and daisies inside, the Chihuly glass exhibit was right outside our classroom windows. Just four days after my class, a hail storm hit North Texas and a few pieces from the exhibit were hit. The Arboretum said only a few of the more fragile pieces from the Chihuly exhibit were damaged.

When I was in the park last weekend, I learned from one of the docents that it took several large donations and just the right timing to have the installation here in Dallas from the world renowned glass artist. I asked the guide what would happen if we had a hail storm. He said the sculptures were made of pretty thick glass, and Dale Chihuly had said that if a piece was broken, he could have another shipped out to replace it pretty quickly. Chihuly works on one particular style over and over again, until he has almost a warehouse filled with that design, before he moves on to another subject.

Suddenly my sunflower obsession has been vindicated!

Get your comfy shoes on, grab your favorite camera and let's take a stroll through the Chihuly glass exhibit (pre-hailstorm). Be sure to bring soda money, it's a hot one here in Big D this week!

I watched this little fellow try to land on one
of the glass branches  of the Yellow Icicle Tower.
He tried three times and slid down each time.
Then he chomped a delicious moth from
the leaves under the base, and flew away, happy.

This one was called Frog Feet and it was my
absolute favorite. The feet just glowed in

Ode to the little green bowl....

Blissfully Content Sunflowers and Lazy Daisies was finished around 2 am, three hours before it was time to get up and go to the office and start the day job. Sometimes when I get in the zone, I simply cannot stop - and the white gerbera daisies were looking so cute and fresh and producing all kinds of interesting golden and green shadow tones.

This new painting features my little red bowl in the foreground. It replaces my favorite green bowl, which met an untimely demise during my last Dallas Arboretum workshop a few weeks ago. My little green bowl fell and smashed to pieces when I was moving a prop table around to catch the light just right, collateral damage in the quest for a great demo painting. The little red bowl has stepped up to the plate quite nicely, so far, and gotten along well with the studio models and not insulted any of the lazy daisies. I think you'll be seeing more of this little red bowl in the future.

For those waiting for an update on the release of my first sunflower video, hubby finished the downloading and is working on the editing now! Because you've been so patient and been so kind not to mention my overwhelming sunflower obsession on the blog recently, here is another step by step sunflower for you below. Enjoy!

Farm Fresh new

Farm Fresh Hydrangeas, 14X14

Sold fresh off the easel!

Keeping your hydrangeas fresh as daisies

Farm Fresh Hydrangeas is the newest work in the studio, if you don't count the 20X20 larger version that's holding down the easel today. I found these white hydrangeas at the corner market, and have been pampering and spoiling them, spritzing them with water, giving them cool drinks, and storing them every evening in the coldest room in the house hoping they will last just a few more days.

The best way to preserve hydrangeas is to keep them chilly and wet, and if they are cut and in water, to put them in the refrigerator at night, vase and all. Most of the hydrangeas in pots will end up planted in my hydrangea garden when they are done with their time in the studio spotlight. Someday they'll tell their hydrangea grandchildren about the glory days, and how they were memorialized in paintings and how they lived indoors in the air conditioning and only drank filtered water.

The school is located on a resort property near downtown and overlooks rolling hills and cabins and is just a little bit of heaven all in itself!
