Purple Pantaloons Irises ~ Sold 16X12
Painting Purple Irises on Video
and a Fanny Pat Down at the Airport Besides learning that a dozen southern gals makes up a really fun painting workshop, I learned another very important lesson last weekend during my trip to Tennessee. Do NOT under any circumstances, even if they are really cute, wear your fancy jeans with glitter pockets through Dallas Ft Worth Airport security. Turns out those full body scanners that leave nothing to the imagination could not properly scan my nether regions because I had on my new uber sparkley jeans. Because it was rush hour in the security line, I was about 14 inches face to face with the grinning gentleman behind me while the polite but efficient female agent gave me some fanny pats and sent me on my way. Someone smart explained to me the next day that these machines cannot see through the metallic flakes in the glitter on fancy clothing. Well so much for wearing all my sequined Vegas T shirts through the security! Fortunately there were no sirens that went off, or flashing lights "(All agents stat to line three for the elderly woman in sparkley britches....)...." It was only slightly more embarrassing than getting kicked out of the flower show on Coronado Island, though, come to think of it, the lady in the green apron did not want to pat me down before ordering me to exit the rose judging area without delay. Here is the conversation that occurred later that evening around the NTSA agent's dinner table: So hon, anything interesting happen at work today? Well, other than the 50 year old lady in 20 year old glitter pants, not much... Purple Pantaloons on the Porch |

Oil on Linen Board Demonstration for classTennessee Irises and Southern Belle Potpourri
What do you get when you put a bunch of ladies from Tennessee, West Virginia, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Mississippi, Georgia, and Texas in one room with a lots of paint, four dozen gourmet chocolate covered cake donuts and a few gallons of extra SUH-weet iced tea? You get a rowdy art class, that's what! My first ever out of state art workshop, my first ever workshop in Tennessee, was held in Collierville-Germantown last weekend and we struck gold with the fresh flower selection in the local grocery store which was the size of the State of Connecticut. Starting with glads and sunflowers on Day 1, purple and yellow iris on Day 2, and orange parrot tulips and red daisies on Day 3, these intrepid gals used big brushes to build loose, confident strokes of brilliant pure color on a transparent base. You can see photos of these painty ladies in action below. Don't let their serious countenances fool you, there was a great deal of sugar infused mayhem afoot, especially from the back table on the right, not to point paintbrushes at anyone named Sarah or anything... I love seeing smiles on my students' faces, and helping to infuse a bit of energy and enthusiasm into their zest for painting. I would be delighted to paint flowers with you. Some new 2013 workshops are posted and my upcoming 2012 art classes are almost full, so don't delay! Let's make brilliant florals bloom in oils! Click here for workshop info The class models take a bow! I love what Connie does with red! Sharon's glads were singing! All my rowdy friends making paint fly! |

A BoldBrush Painting Award...... ...and more on aging (dis)gracefully I was delighted to learn that one of my poppy paintings won first place for the people's choice portion of the BoldBrush Painting Contest for September. A huge thanks to everyone who voted for my painting - I swear I had every intention of mailing those promised donuts to you, except my packing supervisor keeps eating them before I can get the box sealed. Which reminds me I got a call last week from a gallery working on a promo for me. I took the call in Mom's kitchen, a place where all sorts of unpredictable things have been known to occur. On speakerphone, the gallery owner said: They want to know if you are an internationally acclaimed artist. My mother replied with no hesitation whatsoever: Her Mom thinks so! So now that mom has confirmed my status, I swear I will stop saying to folks who tell me they read my blog: Wow, you must be bored! A very cute, very young, immensely talented artist in Scottsdale a few weeks ago, upon learning my name, said with enthusiasm, "YOU ARE NANCY MEDINA? YOU ARE THE NANCY MEDINA?" See, Facebook can make you famous...I was thinking. When I assured her I was indeed Nancy Medina, she talked about seeing my work in California and said she was a fan and immediately brought her husband over to introduce us. Then she asked how long I had been painting. I replied that I had started when I was 30, so it's been about 20 years off and on. To which she replied. "OH MY GOD YOU'RE HOW OLD???" The good news is, when you get to be my age, the guilt attached to eating donuts and chocolate lessens exponentially as each month passes... |
Fenced Blue Iris 16X12 Oil on Panel Fenced Blue Iris and... ...the thing for which I shall be famous Fenced Blue Iris is a new floralscape in the studio, finished at dusk amidst the pug snores and new fall television lineup for which I paid little heed. The big announcements this week include new workshops for 2013 posted on the Web site, over seven great sales this week, and the thing for which I shall be most famous. I posted a few studio photos on my Facebook page and the image of my shoe bag paint storage system went viral. Artists from around the globe posted and reposted and exclaimed they could now eliminate their giant flat 2-ton multi-drawer tool cabinets on wheels and take themselves post haste to WalMart for cheap $11 shoe bags! It is a small contribution but one for which I shall always be known. Oh, wait, I forgot to put my name on that photo. Well, darn. Professional obscurity shall continue. At least it's not a lampshade... Studio Director Annie's Scandalous Video Click here for Annie's video Studio Director AnnieBee has many talents and duties, between dispensing much needed spankins to annoying brother Howard and squealing like a pig during important gallery events. Forgetting the immense responsibility that accompanies her fame, Annie was captured on video last week in a compromising moment. She is considering legal action against the puparazzi responsible, although it is likely the damage has been done, since the foreign press has already gotten wind of this.
