FRANKFURT.- The Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt presents a comprehensive exhibition featuring about fifty paintings and drawings by the French Impressionist Gustave Caillebotte from October 18, 2012 to January 20, 2013. Consistently rounded off with one hundred and fifty outstanding photographic positions of the late nineteenth and the early twentieth century, the show conveys a clear idea of Caillebotte’s pioneering role in the development of a new way of seeing. While this extraordinary artist has already assumed his rightful place next to great Impressionists like Auguste Renoir, Édouard Manet, or Edgar Degas in France, Great Britain, and the United States, a critical examination of Caillebotte’s production is still in its early stages in Germany. Caillebotte’s oeuvre offers new, fundamental, and complementary approaches to French Impressionist painting: ... More

THE HAGUE.- At the time, Sylvia Kristel was worried about starring in the 1974 erotic movie ?Emmanuelle,? but consoled herself with the thought that few people would see her sexually charged performance. That turned out to be wrong. ?I thought, ?oh my goodness, this is not easy stuff,?? the Dutch actress once said in an interview. ?I was nervous but then my boyfriend said, ?Who?s going to watch this film? It will never pass censorship.?? It did pass the censors and went on to become a classic of the sexually liberated 1970s, propelling Kristel to international stardom.

The flight coupled as an extensive marketing campaign for the New York World’s Fair and the progress of aviation science in the US.

CHICAGO, IL.- An important collection of Howard Hughes artifacts will be sold at auction November 7 at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, documenting Hughes’ record-setting Around-the-World flight. Following a renewed interest in the early aviation exploits of the notoriously eccentric millionaire, the unprecedented archive is expected to achieve well over $15,000 at auction. Stops were made in Paris, Moscow, Takutsk (Siberia) and Fairbanks, before the return to an homecoming parade in New York. NEW YORK, NY.- Paul Kasmin Gallery presents William N. Copley, The Patriotism of CPLY and All That, on view 18 October - 21 November, 2012 at 293 Tenth Avenue, New York. Referencing the historic exhibition by the same title at Iolas Gallery in 1976, this exhibition of Copley’s Patriotic works is emblematic of the social satire and political humor found throughout the artist’s oeuvre. In the paintings on view, which span over a quarter century of CPLY’s career, the artist marshals the visual language of American patriotism to create riotous works full of wit and colorful pomp. A field of stars and stripes vignette a comely reclining nude, the Washington Monument becomes a bathroom stall tableau for CPLY’s own symbolic scrawls, firecrackers and unlit matches embrace in a kiss. As a painter, writer, gallerist, and publisher, the artist blazed a singular path through numerous territories of ... More

NEW YORK, NY.- Mike Weiss Gallery presents MADE IN CHINA, Chinese artist Liao Yibai’s third solo show at the gallery. Inspired by China’s lucrative fake antique industry, twenty plus hand welded stainless steel sculptures displayed on “antiqued” pedestals tell the artist’s version of China’s rich history through three unique series: Fake Antiques, Fake Evidence, and Legends. The title MADE IN CHINA is not only a reference to the origin of the works and the traditional Chinese objets d’art that inspired them, but also to the ubiquitous “MADE IN CHINA” tag which adorns a majority of goods imported into the United States. By producing innovative fakes, Yibai exposes the value of truth. Yibai replicates treasures from the Ming, Qing, Yuan, and other dynasties as he marries ancient forms with pressing contemporary issues in his Fake Antiques. Embellished with playful ... More

Wax anatomical head, front view. ® Science Museum, Science and Society Picture Library.

LONDON.- Surgery is a dangerous practice, requiring detailed knowledge of human anatomy. The best tool for learning has always been a real body. But finding enough ‘subjects’ for dissection has never been easy. In the early 19th century, a huge demand for fresh bodies fuelled the gruesome practice of body snatching. Doctors, Dissection and Resurrection Men explores the murky world of the resurrection men and the ambitious surgeon-anatomist they supplied with fresh corpses. At the heart of the exhibition is an excavation undertaken in 2006 by Museum of London Archaeology which uncovered a forgotten burial ground, in use between 1825¬ and 1841, at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel. What they found was both extraordinary and unexpected. The excavation revealed some 262 burials, some containing just one person, but many containing a confusing mix of bones with extensive evidence of dissection, autopsy, a ... More

The first sale at Sotheby's France devoted entirely to music totals $4.3 million
PARIS.- This exceptional collection, running to nearly 500 lots, brought a total of €3,327,655($4.335.570) to establish the most important sale of printed music for over a century. These remarkable results constitute a vibrant homage to collector André Meyer, who devoted his entire life to music. In the words of Stephen Roe, International Director of Sotheby’s Books & Manuscripts Department: ‘We are very delighted with the results of the sale, which included a number of rarities never seen on the market for 70 years, many of which are not likely to come on the market again.’ Printed manuscripts and scores prompted the highest bidding during the two-day sale. A first edition of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Six Partitas for Keyboard (1731) opened the first session. Collectors from around the world were swift to pay tribute to one of Bach’s rarest and finest printed scores, of which ... More

South African art breaks world record prices at Bonhams in London again
LONDON.- A work titled ‘Red Jacket’, an image by Vladimir Griegorovich Tretchikoff (1913-2006) of his muse and one-time lover in Java, made a world record price of £337,250 (R4.7m) at Bonhams, the international auction house, in London yesterday (17.10.12). Before the sale, the painting had been estimated to sell for £50,000 to £80,000. Top price in the sale was a majestic landscape by Jacob Hendrik Pierneef (1886-1957), titled ‘Kransberg, Rustenberg, Transvaal’, which sold for £361,250 (R5m). A pair of sunlit mountain and farm images, titled ‘Cape Farmlands’, made a new world record for a Pierneef work on paper (smashing the previous record, also set at Bonhams in 2008, five times over). The pair, estimated to sell for £70,000 to £100,000, was knocked down for £289,250 (4m). The third world record in this sale was for a work titled ‘The Garden of Eden’ by Stanley F. Pinker ... More

Priceless porcelain used as Russian shooting targets comes to Bonhams from brink of destruction
LONDON.- An extremely rare Meissen chocolate cup and saucer is one of the key highlights in Bonhams exquisite single owner ceramics sale on 5th December. It is estimated at £25,000 – 35,000 and originally formed part of the stunning Swan service, which was largely smashed to pieces in post-war rampages by the Red Army at the end of the Second World War. The service was originally ordered in 1736 by Heinrich Graf von Brühl, the most powerful man in Dresden during the mid 18th Century, and comprised over 2,200 pieces. The exceptional service stayed in the family for over two centuries until it fell to violent destruction at the end of the war. A staggering 50 percent of the service was destroyed or stolen and it is thought that many pieces were shattered by the Red Army, who threw the priceless plates and saucers high into the air to be used as clay pigeon ... Getty Research Institute announces gift of rare 18th and 19th century prints
LOS ANGELES, CA.- The Getty Research Institute announced the acquisition of European prints from the 18th and 19th centuries, including works by James Ensor (Belgian 1860-1949) and Jean-Jacques de Boissieu (French, 1736-1810). These prints are a gift from an anonymous collector. “Prints are a significant collecting priority for us and we are grateful for this exciting gift, which strengthens our holdings of Ensor prints and adds a robust representation of works by Boissieu,” said Marcia Reed, chief curator of special collections at the Getty Research Institute. Three hand-colored etchings by James Ensor are exceptional examples of his work from the 1890s, when his creativity reached its apex. Two of the three prints take inspiration from stories by Edgar Allan Poe. Each print contains the eerie imagery for which Ensor is known—skeletons, masks and throngs of swelling crowds. These ... Seamus Moran exhibition opens at the Royal Cornwall Museum
TRURO.- When sculptor Seamus Moran goes into his local wood he is not looking for traditional sources of inspiration amongst the flora and fauna. Instead he is on the hunt for knots from dead trees from which he makes moulds – casting them in a mix of resin and iron and joining them together to create compelling works of art. Seamus’s highly imaginative sculptures are on show in a new exhibition that has just opened at the Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro. With names like ‘If swallowed seek medical attention’, ‘Ship of Bones 2012’ and ‘Untempted by Heaven’, they demand attention and are, at times, quite unsettling. One, entitled ‘The Death of Me’, is the image of a skull which Seamus says is a self-portrait, representing what his head feels like as he prepares for an exhibition – so full of ideas that it feels as if they’re bursting out of his brain.
