WASHINGTON, DC.- A shield made of hippopotamus skin. A mastedon’s tooth. Illustrations of fantastic war machines. Contemporary photography. Passages from Shakespeare. What do these seemingly disparate objects have in common? All are on display in Very Like a Whale, a new exhibition at the Folger Shakespeare Library that showcases the lively world of the Renaissance imagination and the uniquely human ability to interpret a single object in multiple ways. The title is taken from a scene in Hamlet, in which the prince and the pompous court advisor Polonius look at passing clouds, each seeing different animals in the sky above. After having been cajoled into agreeing with Hamlet’s ever-changing interpretations, an exhausted Polonius concedes that the cloud is “Very like a whale.” “I’m very interested in what the world looked like to people then. This show is one way to get people to experience that f ... More

Abstract art from the collections of the Art Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina at Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein   Solo exhibition of works on paper by New York-based artist Roland Flexner opens at D'Amelio Gallery   Judd Foundation announces appointment of Rainer Judd and Flavin Judd as Co-Presidents

Enes Mundžić, Elementi Cvijeta VI, n.d.

VADUZ.- The Art Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina, founded in 1946, boasts an impressive, extensive collection of Bosnian-Herzegovinian and Yugoslavian art from the late 19th century to the present. The particular artistic traditions of Bosnia-Herzegovina in the 20th century are, however, practically unknown in Central Europe. This prompted Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, as national gallery of the principality of Liechtenstein, to invite its sister institution in Sarajevo to develop a presentation on the history of abstract art in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The exhibition at Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein brings together nine artists with their works from the 1970s, giving the first insight into the work of the artist group «Prostor Oblik» (Space Form). Their bold approach of an art totally free of objects not only changed the tradition of Socialist Realist painting, but also added new forms of artistic expression to the culture of former ... Roland Flexner, Untitled, 2012. Violet calligraphy ink on paper, 5 1/2 x 7 inches.

NEW YORK, NY.- D'Amelio Gallery presents a solo exhibition of works on paper by New York-based artist Roland Flexner. Over the last decade, Flexner has been expanding his drawing practice, which relies on elements of chance, spontaneity, and the self-directedness of his materials. Through a restrained approach to mark making, including indirect gestures such as tilting the paper to encourage gravity’s effect on ink, or using his breath funneled through straws, the artist creates images unified by the natural properties of his medium and method and their embrace of both contingency and control. Recently, Flexner has introduced liquid graphite into his process, producing images of abstractions in cool tones that endlessly fold into themselves. In this installation, Flexner presents 100 framed drawings, each of which can be read individually or as part of a larger group. On two opposite walls in the main gallery, Fle ... More

Warsaw museum to celebrate Jewish life in Poland
WARSAW (AP).- The box-like glass building rises from soil marked by tragedy in the heart of Warsaw's former Jewish district. At certain angles, its luminous facade reflects the outlines of a dark memorial to those who fought and died in the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising against the Nazis. Yet despite reminders of Jewish suffering all around, the modern building will soon open as a key remembrance site of a mostly upbeat Jewish story, becoming home to the Museum of the History of Polish Jews, a major new museum dedicated to the 1,000 years of Jewish existence in Polish lands. "It is a museum of life," said Sigmund Rolat, a Polish-born Holocaust survivor and American benefactor who has helped bring the museum to life. "We are showing 1,000 years of a magnificent history." Construction of the building is nearly finished and the museum is scheduled to open in 2013 after ... More

Antonio Riello's first solo exhibition in the UK opens at Salon Vert
LONDON.- Curated by James Putnam, DIABOLUS IN VITRO is Riello’s first solo exhibition in the UK and with Salon Vert, comprising of two large scale wall-mounted installations of objects made from Venetian glass and drawings. Spending his childhood surrounded by books in an immense library compiled by his mother, Riello grew up to become a bibliophile– a book addict with a possessive instinct for holding on to his most treasured volumes. In the installation Ashes to Ashes the artist presents a new kind of library - a taxonomic style display of elegant Venetian glass chalices, each hand-blown in a unique design. Within the stem of each glass is encapsulated the ashes of a burnt book. Through this sacrificial artwork, Riello creates a ‘virtual library’ immortalising his most loved and venerated books, from children’s classics to Kafka, Freud and Plato. As he puts it they are “precious relics of self- ... More
