LONDON (AP).- Darth Vader, Charlie Chaplin's Little Tramp, Scarlett O'Hara and Indiana Jones have all come under one London roof. Not the actual characters, of course, but the outfits they made famous in some of Hollywood's most beloved films. A new London exhibition has brought together more than 100 iconic costumes, from Chaplin's tramp outfit to the world's most famous ruby slippers. The show, at the Victoria and Albert Museum, aims to tell the story of costume design and how it helps create believable characters. "It's not really about the clothes — it's really about creating an authentic individual, every time," said guest curator Deborah Landis Wednesday. She has designed costumes for hit movies including "The Blues Brothers." Many of cinema's most legendary outfits are here: Scarlett O'Hara's green velvet dress from "Gone with the Wind," Indiana Jones' leather jacket, fedora and bullwhip from "Raiders of the Lost Ark," and John Travolta's unforgettable white suit fro ... SAINT LOUIS, MO.- This fall the Saint Louis Art Museum presents Federico Barocci: Renaissance Master. Opening October 21, 2012, this international exhibition showcases a trove of exceptionally beautiful paintings and studies, the majority of which have never before been seen in this country, gathered from more than 35 institutions worldwide. Federico Barocci was one of the most innovative Italian artists of the second half of the 16th century and was highly sought after by both religious and secular patrons. A major influence on European masters such as Peter Paul Rubens, Barocci's art combines the beauty of the High Renaissance and the dynamism of the Baroque. In addition to his refined paintings, Barocci completed thousands of preparatory studies (over 1,500 survive), including pastel drawings and oil sketches— a technique he pioneered. ... More

PARIS (AP).- The burglars dashed out the back door with seven masterworks, then sped on screeching tires into the night. Now comes the hard part: The thieves have to unload the paintings, instantly recognizable pieces by Picasso, Matisse and Monet worth millions. If the thieves who robbed Rotterdam's Kunsthal exhibition this week don't have a plan, the stolen art could quickly become a burden. Paintings, sculptures and other cultural treasures can be hard to match with a buyer willing to overlook questionable provenance. Just ask the trafficker who lucklessly tried for 20 years to sell a statue head of Nero's mother stolen from Pompeii before its recovery was announced on Thursday. But, experts say for criminals with connections, it's a low-risk, high-reward job, especially for lesser known pieces. Art theft is the third most lucrative crime in the world, after drugs and illicit arms ... More

NEW YORK, NY.- Paul Kasmin Gallery announce the inaugural New York exhibition of Japanese artist, Makoto Saito, Face to Face/ Composition, on view October 18th - November 21st 2012 at 515 West 27th Street. A methodic painter and renowned avant-garde graphic designer, Saito has spent the past eight years developing software that would allow him to represent the superimposition of images and the eroticism of the body through digital painting and hand-painted print simulation, all-the-while conserving the beauty and fundamentals of the painting process. Through this practice, Saito strives to “make what is most remote from a computer with the use of computer.” For Saito’s New York exhibition debut, Paul Kasmin Gallery exhibits a new body of work divided into two parts, Face to Face and Composition: a series of paintings inspired by Fellini films and a series of works on paper portraying the female body a ... NEW YORK (AP).- A new exhibition is hailing the fashion sense of Katharine Hepburn, whose trademark khakis and open-collar shirts were decidedly unconventional in the 1930s and 40s, when girdles and stockings were the order of the day. The fiercely independent Hepburn famously once said: "Anytime I hear a man say he prefers a woman in a skirt, I say, 'Try one. Try a skirt.'" But skirts and dresses abound in "Katharine Hepburn: Dressed for Stage and Screen" at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, which opens Thursday. Hepburn, who died in 2003 at age 96, saved almost all the costumes from her long career that included four Oscars and such memorable films as "The Philadelphia Story," ''The African Queen," ''Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" and "On Golden Pond." Forty are on view at the exhibition, which runs ... More

Fire engulfs the Big Tex cowboy statue displayed at the State Fair of Texas. AP Photo/John McKibben.

By: Danny Robbins, Associated Press

DALLAS (AP).- The man who provides the voice for Big Tex, the giant cowboy at the State Fair of Texas, was greeting people with his usual "Howdy, folks!" in a slow drawl Friday when someone rushed into his trailer to tell him the towering fair icon was on fire. "It moved quickly," Bill Bragg said of the fire that engulfed the 52-foot-tall structure, leaving not much more than its charred metal frame behind. "It was a quick end." This year's fair was supposed to be a celebration for Big Tex, marking his 60th birthday. Instead, the beloved cowboy was hauled from the grounds on a flatbed truck two days before the end of the fair in a procession resembling a funeral. "It's sad to see this happen, but it's lucky no one was injured or killed," said Mike Blucher of Dallas, who was at the fair with his wife, Linda. The fire brought a temporary end to ... More

World's oldest surviving Vauxhall to be offered for sale at Bonhams
LONDON.- The oldest surviving Vauxhall motor car is to be offered for sale at the Bonhams auction in New Bond Street, London, on Friday 2nd November. The 1903 two-seater 5hp veteran (estimate £60,000 - £80,000), modelled in cream with brown leather upholstery, will be one of several important entries in the auction of Veteran Motor Cars and Related Automobilia at the auction house’s flagship saleroom ahead of this year’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, which is sponsored by Bonhams. Ordered new for Vauxhall managing director Percy Kidner on 6th November 1903, the car passed to its second owner in April the following year, in whose family ownership it has remained ever since. It remained in use as regular transport until about 1920 and then was laid up until 1948, when it was used again by the family before being loaned to The London Science Museum in 1955. In 1956 ... Paraguay breathes new life to its steam train
By: Pedro Servin, Associated Press
SAPUCAL (AP).- In this rural town, people rushed from homes along a once-dilapidated railroad and began waving in disbelief when an English-built locomotive clacked by, spewing smoke and steam again. Motorists screeched to a halt, and some honked their horns to greet the revival of the Carlos Antonio Lopez Railway. Residents of Sapucai celebrated like a national holiday with traditional music and dance over the return of the steam trains once run by two former British-owned companies, Central Railway Co. Ltd. and Perry Cutbill De Lungo. The railway carried cargo and passengers from its official opening on Oct. 21, 1861, until it finally shut down 140 years later. Now it's back as a tourist attraction in Sapucai, which is about 56 miles (90 kilometers) ... More

Major exhibition of Haitian art, representing Vodou, opens at Nottingham Contemporary
NOTTINGHAM.- Nottingham Contemporary presents a major exhibition of Haitian art, the UK’s first for many years. Nearly 200 paintings, sculptures and sequin flags by 35 artists from the 1940s to the present day trace the representation of Vodou, reflecting Haiti’s historical experience through the supernatural. Haiti is especially known for the art of its urban and rural poor. The label “naive” has often been applied to it, but doesn’t do it justice. The imaginative power and visual intricacy of these artworks reflect the richness of Haitian history and culture. They are in sharp contrast to the country’s familiar reputation for extreme poverty, natural disaster and political violence. Haitian art is often at its most extraordinary when inspired by Vodou – a spiritual belief system followed by an estimated 90% of Haitians. With its roots in West African religions, Vodou includes ... More

English city to show off Roman gold coins find
LONDON (AP).- A large batch of 4th-century Roman gold coins found by an amateur treasure hunter will go on display in the English city near where they were discovered. Staff at St. Albans' Verulamium Musem showed off the 159 coins for TV cameras on Wednesday. The coins are examples of the solidus, high-value coins that would been used for major transactions such as buying land or ship cargo, said David Thorold, a curator at the museum. Officials say the coins were found on private land north of St. Albans, but have not identified the site. The town, which is 22 miles (35 kilometers) north of London, also boasts a Roman theater and ruins of ancient walls. Brick salvaged from the Roman city can also be seen in parts of the city's medieval cathedral. The solidus coin, plural solidi, dates to the closing years of the fourth century and was issued under the Emperors Gratian ... More

Myanmar find could flood vintage Spitfire market
By: Aye Aye Win, Associated Press
YANGON (AP).- As many as 140 World War II Spitfire fighter planes — three to four times the number of airworthy models known to exist — are believed to be buried in near-pristine condition in Myanmar. A British-Myanmar partnership says it will begin digging them up by the end of the month. The go-ahead for excavation came earlier this week when the Myanmar government signed an agreement with British aviation enthusiast David J. Cundall and his local partner. Cundall, a farmer and businessman, earlier this year announced he had located 20 of the planes, best known for helping the Royal Air Force win mastery of the skies during the Battle of Britain. On Thursday, however, a retired Myanmar geology professor who has assisted in the recovery operation ... More
