"Until now, Greene's photos were sold one by one or in lots of no more than a few, but never so many at once," Windorbski said. The sale will also be Poland's biggest ever art auction, he added. In the black-and-white pictures, Monroe is captured dressed in jeans, fixing her lipstick and hair, eating a meal and coyly chatting on the phone. Such images will have a fixed minimum price ranging from 120-3,300 euros ($156-3,498). "Prices will certainly spike on auction day, but I hope I'll be able to buy my favourite photo, one with ... The Los Angeles presentation is made possible by a generous gift from Steve Tisch. “By featuring this legendary filmmaker and his oeuvre in his first retrospective within the context of an art museum, Stanley Kubrick will reevaluate how we define the artist in the twenty-first century, and simultaneously expand upon LACMA’s commitment to exploring the intersection of art and film,” said Mi ... Winston Churchill by William Orpen, 1916, Lent by the Churchill Chattels Trust; Image © National Portrait Gallery, London.

LONDON.- The National Portrait Gallery has been lent a major portrait of Winston Churchill, a rarely seen life-size painting by William Orpen, one of Britain’s most significant portrait painters and war artists. It goes on display at the Gallery from tomorrow, Thursday 1 November 2012. Painted in 1916, during the darkest moment in the statesman’s career, Churchill regarded it as the finest portrait of himself. Capturing a mood of uncertainty in this introspective portrait, Orpen spoke of the misery expressed in the face. Churchill told the artist, ‘It is not the picture of a man. It is the picture of a man’s soul.’ Throwing himself into military strategy in the First World War, Churchill’s level of involvement ran the risk of his being held personally responsible for failure, as turned out to be the case in the Battle of Gallipoli, 1915-16, fought in the Dardanelles Straits and the Gallipoli penins ... VATICAN CITY (AFP).- As the Sistine Chapel celebrates its 500th anniversary, the Vatican said Wednesday it may have to limit the huge numbers of visitors because pollution is damaging Michelangelo's frescoes, one of the artistic wonders of the world. The scenes, including the moment in which God reaches out and gives life to Adam with the touch of his finger, are being damaged by the breath, sweat and heat of the 10,000 to 30,000 tourists who walk through the chapel every day. The Vatican had an air-conditioning system fitted during restorations in the chapel in the 1990s, but critics have warned that it is no longer sufficient to deal with the amount of dust and dirt being dragged in by today's visitors. Museums director Antonio Paolucci said a specialist company has been ... More

Linda Connor, North Star and Meteor, from The Olson House, 2006. Archival Pigment Print (Printed 2012), 25 x 20 inches. Courtesy of the artist and Haines Gallery.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- From Two Worlds, Linda Connor's sixth solo exhibition with Haines Gallery, pairs two seemingly divergent perspectives. The first is The Olson House portfolio, in which she photographs the Olson House, a 200-year-old farmhouse made iconic through the paintings of Andrew Wyeth. She infuses this well-known site that is rife with Americana with her unique approach to the mystic and sacred. The second revisits Connor's well-known, pictures of spiritually charged sites, but these works are newly displayed as large-scale photographs, printed on silk bringing to bear a presentation that encourages an immersive reassessment of her content and intention. The Cincinnati Museum of Art commissioned Connor to photograph the Olson House in 2006 and subsequently displayed a selection of her images alongside watercolors and drawings by the American painter Andrew Wyeth. Wyeth chronicled the Olson House and its inhabit ... More

Solo exhibtion of photography by David Chancellor opens at Jack Bell Gallery in London
LONDON.- Jack Bell Gallery presents a solo exhibtion of photography by David Chancellor. Using medium format film, Chancellor documents the tourist trophy hunting industry in Africa today. Work from the same series, entitled ‘Hunters’, won the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize at National Portrait Gallery, London. The show is also accompanied by the launch of a new artist publication. In many parts of Africa the traditional landowners have switched from farming livestock to big game. The landowners become shareholders in these animals and by default become very effective game wardens, making poaching a difficult and risky pastime. Rural Zimbabweans, for example, now encourage foreign hunters onto their communal lands to hunt elephant in exchange for the meat, and a percentage of the revenue derived from these hunts. While a picture of a man who just shot a Leopard may ... More

Japan collector puts Dali, Miro, Warhol on sale
TOKYO (AFP).- A Japanese museum showcasing art created in countries on the 43rd parallel will sell off its 400-piece collection, including prints by Salvador Dali and Joan Miro, the owner said Wednesday. Masaru Miyata, 69, opened the N43 Degrees Museum in 1997, after a decade collecting the artworks as he travelled in Europe, North America, China and Mongolia, visiting countries lying on that line of latitude. The collector established the museum in Kushiro, a city also on N43, on Japan's main northern island of Hokkaido. "I wanted to compare and contrast the artworks created on the same latitude," Miyata said, telling AFP that he was planning to close the museum next month because of his age and health concerns. "I collected them as I backpacked the world over many years, so it is unbearable to let them go separately. I hope the entire collection will be acquired as a whole," he ... More

Corning Museum of Glass unveils 2012 Rakow Commission by Danish artist Steffen Dam
CORNING, NY.- The Corning Museum of Glass unveiled its 2012 Rakow Commission work: Flower Block by Danish artist Steffen Dam. The artist’s most ambitious work to date, Flower Block is a grouping of 24 glass blocks in the style of his well-known series of glass panels, each containing the artist’s interpretation of parts of a flower. Dam’s glass blocks, panels and jars invoke fossilized biological and botanical slides used in scientific research - but the function of the ambiguous specimens trapped in glass is aesthetic, not scholarly. The artist learned about the natural world from his paternal grandfather, whose library was filled with illustrated volumes on biology, natural sciences, and flora and fauna. Dam’s initial training as a toolmaker is obvious in the refined craftsmanship of his cut, drilled and polished glass works. “Dam’s work is very much about the exploration of process ... More
