LONDON.- On 20 November 2012 Sothebys London will offer the recently re-discovered oil study Marie Krøyer and Anna Ancher on the Beach at Skagen by Danish artist Peder Severin Krøyer (1851 1909) in a sale of 19th Century European Paintings, together with a group of important works by Scandinavian artists. The study, estimated at £150,000-250,000, is one of four recorded preparatory oil paintings that relate to Krøyers large-scale blue period masterpiece Summer Evening on Skagens South Beach in the Skagen Museum, Denmark. Painted in 1893, the motif is arguably the high point of the artists exploration of mood painting. The finished work in the Skagen Museum and the related four oils capture the carefree existence and cosmopolitan elegance that defined the isolated painting community that flourished in Skagen at the tip of Jutland at the end of the nineteenth century. Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Retrato desagradable (Portrait désagréable), 1945. Épreuve gélatino-argentique tardive. Collection Colette Urbajtel /Archivo Manuel Álvarez Bravo, s.c.
PARIS.- Getting away from the stereotypes about exotic Surrealism and the folkloric vision of Mexican culture, this exhibition of work by Manuel Álvarez Bravo at Jeu de Paume offers a boldly contemporary view of this Mexican photographer. The photographic work done by Manuel Álvarez Bravo (Mexico City, 1902-2002) over his eight decades of activity represent an essential contribution to Mexican culture in the 20th century. His strange and fascinating images have often been seen as the product of an exotic imagination or an eccentric version of the Surrealist avant-garde. This exhibition will go beyond such readings. While not denying the links with Surrealism and the clichés relating to Mexican culture, the selection of 150 photographs is designed to bring out a specific set of iconographic themes running through Álvarez Bravos practice: reflections and trompe-lil effects ... File photo of author Franz Kafka. AP Photo/HO, File. By: Lauren E. Bohn
JERUSALEM (AP).- After a long, tangled journey that Franz Kafka could have written about himself, an unseen treasure of writings by the surrealist author will be put on display and later online, an Israeli court ruled in documents released Sunday. Ownership of the papers had been in dispute after the Israeli National Library claimed them, over the wishes of two sisters who had inherited the vast collection of rare documents from their mother and insisted on keeping them. Friday's ruling by the Tel Aviv District Family Court ordered the collection to be transferred to the library in Jerusalem, which had argued that Max Brod, Kafka's close friend, had bequeathed the manuscripts to the library in his will. The two sisters, Eva Hoffe and Ruth Wiesler, had inherited the documents from their mother, Brod's secretary, and had been storing them in a Tel Aviv apartment and bank vaults. Kafka, a Jewish Prague native who wrote in German, is known for his dark tales of ... LONDON.- Bonhams will offer this fascinating sculpture of a Buddhist disciple for £200,000 to £300,000 in its sale of Fine Chinese Art on November 8 in London. More Chinese scientist says prehistoric man ate pandas BEIJING (AP).- China's beloved national symbol the panda may have been seen quite differently by ancient humans: as food. Scientist Wei Guangbiao says prehistoric man ate pandas in an area that is now part of the city of Chongqing in southwest China. Wei, head of the Institute of Three Gorges Paleoanthropology at a Chongqing museum, says many excavated panda fossils "showed that pandas were once slashed to death by man." The Chongqing Morning Post quoted him Friday as saying: "In primitive times, people wouldn't kill animals that were useless to them" and therefore the pandas must have been used as food. But he says pandas were much smaller then. Wei says wild pandas lived in Chongqing's high mountains 10,000 to 1 million years ago. The Chinese government invests greatly in studying the native species and trying to ensure its survival. Pandas number ...
