WASHINGTON (AFP).- Scientists in Canada have unearthed the first fossils of a feathered dinosaur ever found in the Americas, the journal Science reported on Thursday. The 75 million year old fossil specimens, uncovered in the badlands of Alberta, Canada, include remains of a juvenile and two adult ostrich-like creatures known as ornithomimids. Until now feathered dinosaurs have been found mostly in China and in Germany. "This is a really exciting discovery, as it represents the first feathered dinosaur specimens found in the Western Hemisphere," said Darla Zelenitsky, an assistant professor at the University of Calgary and lead author of the study. "These specimens are also the first to reveal that ornithomimids were covered in feathers, like several other groups of theropod dinosaurs," Zelenitsky said. COLUMBIA, SC.- A special and unexpected loan to the Columbia Museum of Art now provides visitors a view of Venice, Italy, by the renowned painter, Thomas Moran. Typically, the CMA researches and strategically plans for loans of art, but in this case, CMA Chief Curator Will South was surprised and delighted when the painting arrived at the Museum unforeseen. The owners (also CMA donors) of this Thomas Moran painting weren’t expecting to see it here either. They asked their friends in Missouri to pick up and bring to Columbia a “small pastel of Notre Dame,” which was “leaning against the wall of the bedroom” in the owner’s Missouri home. LONDON.- A major work by the leading British painter William Scott (1913-1989) has been pledged to Tate by the artist’s sons, Robert and James Scott, to mark the centenary of his birth in 2013. The Harbour 1952 is one of the artist’s most radical works and was a treasured painting in his own collection. Valued at over £500,000, it is the first example of Scott’s seminal black and white works to enter the Tate Collection. The Harbour will be included in a centenary touring exhibition organised by Tate St Ives in association with The Hepworth Wakefield and Ulster Museum, Belfast. Co-chaired by actor Leonardo DiCaprio and LACMA Trustee Eva Chow, the evening brought together 550 international guests from the worlds of art and design, entertainment, fashion, and music, among others. NEW ORLEANS (AP).- A marathon project is under way in New Orleans to digitize thousands of time-worn 18th-century French and Spanish legal papers that historians say give the first historical accounts of slaves and free blacks in North America. Yellowed page by yellowed page, archivists are scanning the 220,000 manuscript pages from the French Superior Council and Spanish Judiciary between 1714 and 1803 in an effort to digitize, preserve, translate and index Louisiana's colonial past and in the process help re-write American history. "No single historian could ever live long enough to write all the books that are to be written from all these documents," said Emily Clark, a Tulane University historian who has worked in the papers. Manufactured by Colonel Albert Pope’s American Cycle Manufacturing Company of New York, the pioneering Rambler motorcycle is in extremely rare and original, unrestored condition. Astronauts and schoolkids will be on hand Tuesday at the California Science Center in Los Angeles at the grand opening of its new shuttle display. Visitors to the free display can't go inside Endeavour but they can use virtual exhibits, including touch-screen computer displays with information about the shuttle's flight deck. Also on display is Endeavour's zero-gravity toilet. Thousands of people watched as the giant spacecraft made its final journey through the streets of Los Angeles and Inglewood two weeks ago.
