Chinese collectors gather for the autumn sale of China Guardian Auctions Co. AP Photo/Vincent Yu. By: Kelvin Chan, AP Business Writer
HONG KONG (AP).- Chinese and international auction houses are encroaching on each other's territory in Hong Kong and Beijing for the first time as they step up the battle for the Asian art market. China Guardian Auctions Co., the country's second biggest auction house, held a small sale of Chinese ink paintings, calligraphy and furniture last weekend in Hong Kong, its first outside mainland China. The firm, founded less than two decades ago, went head-to-head with 268-year-old global giant Sotheby's fall sales in the former British colony. China's other big player, Beijing Poly International Auction Co., also plans its first sale in Hong Kong next month. The two firms are little known outside of China, but their forays into Hong Kong, now a semiautonomous Chinese territory, are aimed at changing that. Sotheby's, meanwhile, has big plans to expand into mainland China after setting up a joint venture allowing it ... More

NEW YORK (AP).- Francois Nars had Andy Warhol coffee table books in his living room and Yves Saint Laurent in his closet growing up in the '70s in the south of France. "I always feel so terrible for the people who got born after that era because there was something really in the air that was unexplainable," the makeup legend said, lounging in the lobby of a Midtown hotel for a recent interview. "There was something very, very free. Today, everything is so much more controlled and so much more prepared," he said. Fear not, post-Baby Boomers. In this, the 25th anniversary year of Warhol's death, Nars' namesake company has taken on the pop icon's silvery Factory, silkscreened superstars and avant-garde films in a limited-edition cosmetic collection, exclusive to Sephora stores until Nov. 1. It's the first time the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts has collaborated on cosmetics, and the 29-piece Nars line coincides with "Regarding Warhol: 60 Artists, 50 ... More

For his third solo show at the gallery, Smith has decided to pursue two of the most controversial subjects of our time: religion and politics. As a practicing Mormon, Smiths interest in religion, and inclusion of it as a subject matter in his work, has been ongoing. This election cycle of 2012 has brought Mormonism to the front of the world stage as Mitt Romney runs for election as President of the United States of America. Smith, instead of retreating into a safe corner and remaining silent about his relationship with his church and the increasing interest surrounding it, has come out with all guns blazing. The opening night of the exhibition will contain a live action performance by Smith and gallery visitors. Two volunteers will take up the roles of Barack Obama ... More Pondering the mysteries of Easter Island By: Karen Schwartz, for The Associated Press EASTER ISLAND (AP).- From its famed giant stone statues to finding a good, affordable hotel, Easter Island is full of mysteries. There are ancient questions, like how the statues were transported, and why the island lost its trees. And there are modern puzzles, like what $1,600 a night will get you in a hotel and why roads aren't better marked for visitors touring the island. Perhaps it's fitting that riddles still exist on the most remote inhabited island on earth: a Chilean territory in the South Pacific, 2,300 miles (3,700 kilometers) to the west of the South American continent. Yet I hoped for answers. After flying nearly 20 hours from New York, and having one of our group shaken down for a bribe by a customs' agent, I wanted to not only see the sites, but understand ... Peter Gamlen, a 23-year-old British illustrator, said he believes the suit belonged to the late actor, director, entrepreneur and racing driver. The suit was by the tailor Henry Stewart. So, Gamlen researched Stewart and found an obituary in the New York Times from 1993 that listed Newman among the tailor's clients.
