Giovanni Martinelli (1600-1659), Allegory of Astronomy. Oil on canvas, 65 x 50 cm.
SHANGHAI.- Exhibiting at the Shanghai Fine Jewellery and Art Fair (Stand G5) at the Shanghai Exhibition Center (SEC), China, from 3 to 11 November 2012 for the first time, Moretti Fine Art presents fine works by masters of the Italian Renaissance and other periods to this new and exciting market. One of the highlights is a Florentine tondo, depicting The Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist and two shepherds by The Master of Memphis (active c.1500-1510). When this panel appeared at auction in 1961 it was catalogued as by Filippino Lippi (c.1457-1504), son and pupil of Fra Filippo Lippi (c.1406-1459), but scholars, including Everett Fahy, Jonathan Nelson and Patrizia Zambrano, have subsequently attributed this tender devotional image to the anonymous Master of Memphis. The latter, an unidentified assistant to Filippino, has been dubbed the Master of Memphis after a work in the collection of the Brooks Mus ... More

Carole Bayer Sager, Avalanche.
SANTA MONICA, CA.- William Turner Gallery opened New Works: Paintings by Carole Bayer Sager. The show opened on November 1st, with a reception for the artist. The exhibition features Bayer Sagers evocative new series of paintings, which focus on abstracted subjects. Rich in color and sensual surface textures, the paintings range from micro to macro views of peanuts, popcorn and cracker-jacks, amongst others. These intimate and expansive perspectives create an intentional ambiguity, allowing viewers to more freely tap into their own associations. According to Bayer Sager, I have been surrounded by pop culture my entire life. I live it and add to it when writing songs. In my recent paintings, I am fascinated by studying small and often overlooked every day subjects, and enlarging them beyond their natural states, transforming them into something entirely new. CHENGDU (AFP).- A group of museums commemorating China's violent Cultural Revolution is opening up normally tightly controlled discussion of the chaotic era -- but only up to a point. Businessman Fan Jianchuan has opened six museums about the ten year period beginning in 1966 when China's then-leader Mao Zedong called on ordinary citizens to struggle against entrenched interest groups -- including government officials. The 55-year-old says he's filled six warehouses with artefacts from the period, when young people formed often violent "Red Guard" groups and those labelled as "capitalist roaders" were publicly tortured at mass rallies. "I see myself as an archaeologist of the Cultural Revolution," Fan, a former government official who made a fortune as a real estate developer, told AFP in his museum office in the southwestern ... John Byrne, Self Portrait on White, 2012.
LONDON.- The Fine Art Society announced their third solo show for the Scottish artist John Byrne. Consisting of an entirely new body of work, the exhibition, one of his largest to date, is being displayed across two floors of the gallery. At 72, Bryne is living a quiet life in Edinburgh where he paints incessantly. Being happily emancipated from any school or scene allows him a pleasurable and productive time in the studio. Almost everything Byrne paints is cultivated from his boyhood memories and his imagination. Byrne was brought up in a dire housing scheme in Paisley in the 1950s at a time when the town was known as the murder capital of Scotland. There is no doubt that a sense of danger pervades his paintings, especially in u ... More
Khaled Takreti (1964 -), 'Portrait', 150 x 150 cm. Acrylic on Canvas 2011.
DUBAI.- From the 5 to the 29 November, Ayyam Gallery DIFC will present, Silence a solo exhibition of Syrian artist Khaled Takreti. Departing from his usual heavily saturated candy coloured canvases, a subdued palette of sepia and grey tones and stark backgrounds render this body of work more engaging as the viewer is able to quietly impose onto the world of these silent characters. In many of the portraits there is an almost palpable loneliness, yet there is no sense of weakness in Takretis characters. They stare directly at the viewer, almost challenging him to ponder over the internal thoughts lying behind their detached facades. Takreti states that his desire with this series is to present a less romantic, more contemporary view of external life. His paintings are a mirror of himself, and at present, with the ... More | | More News | India's effigy sculptors turn to human memorial statues SMALL GIRIZ (AFP).- In a busy sculpture workshop in west India, there is one unfamiliar face alongside the images of divine figures such as Jesus, the Virgin Mary and Hindu goddess Parvati. This is Ivy, the late beloved wife of 82-year-old Peter Pereira, and she is being commemorated in a life-size bust. The fibreglass figure is the latest example of a growing trend: commissioning memorial sculptures of the dead. For when a photograph is not enough, the Sequeiras -- a third-generation family of religious effigy makers -- operate a successful sideline to bereaved relatives who want a three-dimensional tribute to their lost loved ones. Using old photographs to capture a likeness, the statues and busts are made of wood or fibreglass, coloured with paint and completed with realistic glass eyes. In Ivy's case, they plan to finish the look with spectacles. "I will feel she is still here because of the ... The Gulbenkian Galápagos Residency Programme gave the artists a unique opportunity to engage with the islands on their own terms, whether observing the strange wildlife, spending time with scientists carrying out research, travelling with tourists or meeting members of the local population who have chosen to live there. They found plenty of material to inspire new work, providing insights into the complexity of the social and environmental challenges that impinge on this fragile ecosystem. A World Heritage Site ...
