Tulips was created in an edition of five, each of which features a unique arrangement of the colours of the flowers. Since their completion, these have become emblematic of Koons' work, the other examples are held by high-profile collections: one was shown at the unveiling of the Broad Contemporary Art Museum at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2008, while others are at the Guggenheim Bilbao, the Prada Foundation and the Viktor Pinchuk Foundation; ... MUNICH.- Haus der Kunst presents a new monumental installation by Haegue Yang, "Accommodating the Epic Dispersion – On Non-cathartic Volume of Dispersion". As announced in May, this installation is the first in a series of commissioned work that will be exhibited in the museum's 800 square-meter Middle Hall over a period of one year. The series, "Der Öffentlichkeit – Von den Freunden Haus der Kunst", begins on November 9. Like Haegue Yang's dOCUMENTA 13 contribution, "Accommodating the Epic Dispersion – On Non-cathartic Volume of Dispersion" consists of Venetian blinds suspended from the ceiling. These elements are structured in three autonomous, yet united parts: a massive towering structure, which is confrontationally located at the hall's entrance; a flat vertical grid wall; and a voluminous rectangle on top, which is gradually fragmented toward the floor. Depending on the angle of approach, the blinds ... More

NEW YORK, NY.- Sperone Westwater announces an exhibition of vintage works by Italian artist, Mario Merz (1925 - 2003). This is the artist’s eighth solo show at the gallery, and features three major paintings and one sculpture from the early 1980s. The exhibition is on view 1 November through 22 December 2012. A principle member of the Arte Povera group in the late 1960s, Merz possessed an anti-elitist aesthetic. In his work, he utilized accessible and unconventional materials from everyday life, as well as organic and inorganic debris. The rapid industrialization of northern Italy in the second half of the 20th century gave rise to an interchangeable association between the natural environment and architecture. This relationship, in addition to the disciplines of science and mathematics, are consistently prevalent in Merz’s alchemical art. Central to Merz’s ... More

NEW YORK, NY.- Bonhams in New York will exhibit the original Iwo Jima Monument at The 590 Madison Avenue Sculpture Garden adjoining its auction galleries, after the sculpture is featured in the November 11 Veterans Day Parade. This original Iwo Jima Monument was created by Felix de Weldon to commemorate the raising of an American flag by five Marines and a Navy Corpsman on Mount Suribachi as Allied Forces struggled to capture the Japanese-held island in February of 1945. BERLIN.- C/O Berlin, International Forum For Visual Dialogues, presents the Retrospective of the work of American photographer Joel Sternfeld, from November 10, 2012 to January 13, 2011. It is an epic journey across America—off the beaten track of tourist travel and far away from the celebrated national sights. The landscapes, streetscapes, parks, and houses that appear—along with their residents—in Joel Sternfeld’s photographs initially seem unspectacular, harmless, and familiar. Yet the images are unexpectedly powerful. Barely concealed beneath the surface of these images are failed utopias, forgotten fates, and bloody crime scenes. Joel Sternfeld peels away the layers soberly and precisely, bringing to light the limitations of human perception, the lightness of forgetting, and the everyday nature of violence. The explosive power of his pictures lies precisely in their quiet refusal of all sensational ... More

By: Suzette Laboy, Associated Press
MIAMI (AP).- Its roots are in 19th century Cuba, but the guayabera — a button-down shirt in cotton or linen with four pockets and embroidery or pleats down the front — has evolved into a fashionable and formal shirt worn from Mexico to Miami. "The Guayabera: A Shirt's Story" at the HistoryMiami museum is the first exhibition to trace the story of the shirt's evolution through Cuba, Mexico and the United States, where it is particularly popular in cities with large Latin American and Caribbean populations. The exhibition runs through Jan. 13. LONDON.- Following the huge success of his 2009 exhibition, Pangolin London announced their solo show of work by Jon Buck. Charting the most recent developments in his career, Turning Inside Out explores Buck’s most spontaneous and bold sculpture to date. Through his pre-occupation with animal forms, and birds in particular, Buck has created a joyous and lyrical visual language. His totemic sculptures and vivid animal and human characters invoke the raw, spiritual qualities he believes to be rooted in all of us. Clever, humorous and deeply moving, Jon Buck’s work acts as intercessor between our contemporary intellectual selves and our more ancient, unconscious nature as animals. This lively exhibition looks to a time when nature was revered by man and explores the human need for cultural and spiritual icons in the modern age. Eschewing fashion from the start of his career, ... More
