Near-complete skeleton of a mammoth, between 200,000 and 500,000 years old, found

Archeologists working along the Changis-sur-Marne riverbank about 30 miles (50 Km) east of Paris, after unearthing the rare near complete skeleton of a mammoth, which has been christened “Helmut". The remains which include four connected vertebrae and a complete pelvis, dating back some 200,000-500,000 years ago, were discovered by accident during excavations at an Ancient Roman site. PARIS (AP).- A nearly complete mammoth skeleton has just been uncovered at Changis-sur-Marne in the Seine-et-Marne department. This type of discovery, in its original context, is exceptional in France since only three specimens have been found in 150 years: the first such discovery, known as "the mammoth of Choulans”, was discovered in Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon in 1859. This mammoth is probably a Mammuthus primigenius, a wooly mammoth with long tusks that were used to expose edible vegetation under the snow. These animals could attain 2.8 to 3.4 meters high at their withers and were covered with fur and a thick layer of fat. They usually lived in grassy steppe environments. This species lived in Eurasia and North America. The mammoth of Changis-sur-Marne lived between 200,000 and 50,000 years ago, at the same time as Neandertals. Mammoths were well adapted to cold climates and thus disappeared from western Europe 10,000 years ago when the climate became warmer. The most recent sp ... More

LIMA (AP).- The mummified toddler seized from antiquities traffickers is at least 700 years old and sits, spine curved forward, only about a foot tall. It was welcomed back to Peru on Tuesday as a sort of celebrity, a symbol of the nation's effort to protect its cultural heritage. "This small package," Culture Minister Luis Peirano told reporters, "is just a sample of the sacking, of the violation of our patrimony and all our inheritance." Police in neighboring Bolivia seized it two years ago as a Bolivian citizen tried to ship it to an address in Compiegne, France, in a cardboard box. Bolivia's culture minister, Pablo Groux, formally handed it over to Peru at a news conference on Tuesday. It was wrapped in white linen because of its precarious condition, with underlying cloth made of cotton and wool from some sort of cameloid, which include llamas and alpacas. Only two of the five pieces of cloth in which it was wrapped are original, and its left leg belonged to another child. ... More

BARCELONA.- With an exhibition entitled Critical Episodes (1957-2011). The MACBA Collection, sponsored by the AXA Foundation, MACBA, the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, presents a new organisation of its collection. The selection suggests certain antecedents to what we now call systemic crisis. The show, which features more than 200 works by 64 artists, is organised into six “episodes”: Content Becomes Something to be Avoided Like a Plague; The Art of the First Globalisation; Fissures; Voyeurism, Fetishism and Narcissism; Work, Power and Control in a Globalised World; and Déconnage. These episodes occupy all the Museum floors and even venture out into the public space in the case of Allan Sekula’s work Shipwreck and Workers (Version 3 for Kassel) (2005-2007). Part of this piece, which was shown at Documenta in Kassel in 2007, will ... More

Roger Ballen, Boarding house, 2008, from the series Boarding House, Archival pigment
print, 80 x 80.

TEL AVIV.- Photographer Roger Ballen was born in New York in 1950, and has lived and worked in Johannesburg, South Africa, since 1982. The current exhibition of Ballen’s photographs, presents 40 of his photographs taken in that country over the past 30 years. Ballen's aesthetic language crystallized into a unique, original style in the mid-1980s, at an early stage in his career. Direct, harsh and powerful portraits of marginal characters living in South Africa's rural areas, became the immediate trademark of his work. Over time, his visual style became more defined, while his message evolved into a more complex and enigmatic statement. Motifs from the homes of the people in the early series (Dorps and Platteland) and backgrounds that supply relevant information about the context, re-occur in exaggerated décor in his later series (ie Shadow Chamber, Boarding House and Asylum). Over time, Roger Ballen’s ... More

Pushpamala N, Abduction-The Battle on the Ground.

MUMBAI.- The Passion explores the characters of three women from the Ramayana as archetypal figures. Set in fantasy environments, fateful incidents from the epic are played out on a spectacular stage in both still photographs and videos, with elaborate costuming and lighting to create powerful atmospheres. Pushpamala refers to various genres of image-making in her works, resulting in richly layered hybrids with multiple references. Many of the works in the exhibition refer to theatre stills from the early 20th century, while others use early cinema as their models. The artist is always the central protagonist in these dramas and the works function as documents of performances, as critiques of representational constructions, and as oblique self-portraits. The Ramayana, seen as the national epic, is the story of the good warrior king/ hero/ god Rama who is banished from his kingdom to the deep forest due to the machinations of his stepmother Kaikeyi, who wants her own son to be ki ... New Zealand beaching proves rarest of whales exists
By: Nick Perry, Associated Press
WELLINGTON (AP).- The spade-toothed beaked whale is so rare that nobody has seen one alive, but scientists have proof the species still exists. Two skeletons were identified as belonging to the species after a 17-foot whale and her calf beached themselves in New Zealand in 2010. Scientists hope the discovery will provide insights into the species and into ocean ecosystems. It was almost a missed opportunity, however, since conservation workers misidentified the carcasses as a much more common type of whale and buried them. In a paper published Tuesday in the journal "Current Biology," researchers from New Zealand and the United States say of their discovery: "For the first time we have a description of the world's rarest and perhaps most ... Tigerish world record for Japanese work of art at Bonhams sale in London
LONDON.- A fine large wood netsuke figure of a tiger carved by Naito Toyomasa (1773-1856), Tanba, early 19th century was the top item - and a world record - in Bonhams sale of fine Japanese Art on Tuesday November 6th in which 582 works of art achieved a sale total of £2,085,000. The sculpture, just 4.5cm (1¾in) in height, was estimated to sell for £35,000-40,000, but made £103, 250, a new world record for Toyomasa. His previous record was a £85,250 for a netsuke from the fabled Szechenyi Collection. Although the tiger is a common subject carved by other artists, this image was an unusually large and boldly carved rendition by Toyomasa. The tiger is seated with its head lowered to the left as it looks back with a ferocious expression, its tail passing forwards between the hind legs and rising at the side. The eyes are inlaid with pale translucent horn. Suzannah Yip, Director of ... More
