MEXICO CITY.- The finding of 47 human burials from the XVI century, in the recently opened Archaeological Zone of San Miguelito in Quintana Roo, reveal the last moments of the pre-hispanic era of this ancient Mayan settlement of the east coast, which was characterized by hunger and crisis, derivative of the Spanish campaigns of conquest and colonization of the XVI century. These interments were discovered inside 11 housing buildings which were excavated by archaeologists of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH – Conaculta). Thirty of these burials correspond to infants between the ages of three and six who died because of malnutrition and acute anemia. The archaeologist Sandra Elizalde, who is responsible for the investigation project of this particular site (in the hotel zone of Cancun), reported that “the study indicates that there was a high ... LOS ANGELES, CA.- In the first half of the fourteenth century, Florence was uniquely positioned as a flourishing center of artistic production, especially in the area of painting and manuscript illumination. Florence at the Dawn of the Renaissance: Painting and Illumination, 1300–1350, a major international loan exhibition on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum from November 13, 2012 through February 10, 2013, will present the most prominent Florentine artists of this era, and will feature the largest grouping of paintings by the Florentine master Giotto di Bondone ever exhibited in North America. The exhibition will focus on those artists who worked as both panel painters and manuscript illuminators, examining these two media side by side and offering a fresh look at the distinctive ... JOHANNESBURG (AP).- Thieves posing as eager art students with their teacher stole more than $2 million worth of paintings from a museum in South Africa's capital in a daring armed robbery, authorities said Monday. The theft Sunday at the Pretoria Art Museum saw robbers calmly pay $2.25 apiece for tickets and ask a curator to show them specific paintings at the gallery before they pulled out pistols and forced all others to the ground, officials said. They tied up the curator and others before collecting the paintings they previously asked about, official said. The robbers favored oil paintings in their theft, grabbing a 1931 painting by famous South African artist Irma Stern of brightly colored sailboats waiting against a pier, city spokesman Pieter de Necker said. ... Edward Hopper's Vermont watercolors featured in new book by Bonnie Tocher Clause   Major early work by Mikhail Larionov to headline MacDougall's Russian Art Auctions   Trisha Donnelly organizes exhibition of works from MoMA's collection as part of Artist's Choice Series

Book Jacket illustration: Edward Hopper, First Branch of the White River, Vermont, 1938. Watercolor over graphite on paper, 21-2/4 x Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

LEBANON, NH.- Edward Hopper's plein air watercolors of rural Vermont evidence another side of the artist known for his iconic depictions of urban loneliness and isolation. During summer excursions between 1927 and 1938, Hopper recorded his singular interpretations of the Vermont landscape, watercolors and drawings of hillsides and meadows, roadside views, and scenes along the White River against the backdrop of the Green Mountains. These little-known works, rarely published, are reproduced sequentially in Edward Hopper in Vermont (University Press of New England) along with the stories of their creation and their subsequent acquisition by private collectors and museums. Bonnie Tocher Clause traces Edward and Jo Hopper's automobile trips through Vermont as they searched for new places to paint. These journeys ... More

SEOUL (AFP).- Five years ago, as he watched TV images of South Korea's foremost historical treasure being engulfed in flames lit by a lone arsonist, Hong Chang-Won remembers having to turn his head away. "It was too heartbreaking to see such beautiful architecture being destroyed like that," said Hong, a registered master craftsman who specialises in traditional Korean ornamental painting. Seoul's 600-year-old Namdaemun (South Gate), listed as "National Treasure Number One" and a source of immense cultural pride, was burned pretty much to the ground on February 10, 2008. The largely wooden structure that had managed to survive the devastation of the 1950-53 Korean War was reduced to ashes by a disgruntled 69-year-old man with some paint thinner and a cigarette lighter. Nearly five years later, following one of the longest, most expensive restoration projects ever undertaken ... More
