Dali painted it while collaborating with choreographer Leonide Massine for the ballet "Mad Tristan".
MONTREAL AFP.- A massive painting by Salvador Dali created in 1944 as a backdrop for a ballet put on by New York's Metropolitan Opera was recently found and displayed Monday in Montreal. The eight by 15 meter piece was offered to circus master Daniele Finzi Pasca, who will use it in his next theatrical and acrobatic production, La Verita, which opens on January 17 in the Canadian metropolis. The artwork depicts the Spanish surrealist painter's vision of the 12th century legend of the adulterous love affair between the Cornish knight Tristan and the Irish princess Iseult (or Isolde). Dali painted it while collaborating with choreographer Leonide Massine for the ballet "Mad Tristan," inspired by Wagner's opera "Tristan and Isolde." He also designed the sets and costumes. LONDON.- This German enigma enciphering machine will go under the hammer for the first time on the 14th November in Knightsbridge (estimated £40,000- 60,000). Koch, at the end of WWI, there was a recognised need for new technology with an imminent Second World War approaching. Whilst this particular device was intended for commercial purposes, by 1939 the majority of enigma machines had been appropriated for German military use. The secret operations at Bletchley Park were responsible for decoding the information communicated by this machine to gain a winning advantage over the Germans. The construction of the machine Colossus at Bletchley Park, thanks to the efforts of British Intelligence, meant the messages scrambled by the enigma machine could eventually be decoded in under twenty-four hours, leading the allies ... More A mile-high skyscraper? Yes, says Ecuador QUITO (AFP).- Not far from Ecuador's capital, tourists flock to a line etched in the ground and straddle it so they've got one foot on either side of the equator. A 30 meter (100 foot) obelisk marks the spot. Now, the provincial governor, thinking much bigger and grander, wants to build a mile-high (1.6 kilometers) skyscraper there. Besides drawing more visitors to what would be the world's tallest building, the structure would honor the Quitu-Cara, an indigenous culture credited with being the first to define the line marking the planet's waistband, said deputy governor Marcela Costales. Promotors say the building would cost $200 million to erect. Its main backer is Gustavo Baroja, governor of Pichincha province, which includes Quito. Contacts have been established with potential investors in the United States and Europe, and a delegation from Qatar that's interested in the tower ... Last spring, Nationalmuseum acquired what is thought to be a unique Swedish table with a porphyry mosaic top. The tabletop shows neo-rococo influences in its form and decoration, which dates it to around 1860, four years after the Swedish royal family sold Elfdals Porphyrverk to Erik Gideon Arborelius. Arborelius ran the business until his death in 1866, and the factory burned down the following year, ending the production of large pieces in Swedish porphyry. Porphyry is a very hard material that is difficult to work with. Most previously known porphyry mosaic tabletops ... More | | | | |
