NEW YORK (AFP).- A seminal work by abstract artist Mark Rothko fetched a huge $75.1 million at Sotheby's Tuesday, while a new record was set for a Jackson Pollock drip painting as the big spenders came out in force. "No. 1 (Royal Red and Blue)" is seen by critics as one of the finest examples of Rothko's characteristic style -- a seemingly simple, but arresting juxtaposition of blocks of color. The winning bid, reached after a prolonged bidding battle in New York, was short of the record $86.9 million paid for Rothko's "Orange, Red, Yellow" at Christie's in May. But it was far over the pre-sale $35-50 million estimate and highlighted a contemporary art auction full of big prizes. The work described by Sotheby's as Rothko's "seminal, large-scale masterpiece" was selected by the artist for his landmark 1954 solo show at the Art Institute of Chicago and had been in the same collection for 30 years before coming to market. The heated auction also saw Jackson Pollock's "Number 4, 195 ... More

NEW YORK (AP).- The first in a series of live and online auctions to raise money for the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts in New York collected over $17 million Monday. The auction at Christie's featured 354 works by Warhol ranging from prints to photographs, some of which have not been seen by the public. Online auctions will begin in February. Leading the sale was "Endangered Species: San Francisco Silverspot," a print that fetched over $1.2 million, Christie's said. Other highlights included "Jackie," a screen print and paper collage of Jacqueline Kennedy that sold for over $626,000, more than double its high estimate of $300,000. Christie's said the auction saw a strong demand for unique photographs and prints with many exceeding high estimates, including "Self-Portrait in Fright Wig," estimated at $12,000 to $18,000, which sold for $50,000. The foundation said the money raised for its endowment from the sales would allow it to expand support of the visual arts, f ... More

David Hockney, A Bigger Splash, 1967. Tate. Purchased 1981© David Hockney.

LONDON.- A Bigger Splash will take a new look at the dynamic relationship between performance and painting from 1950 to the present day. Taking its title from David Hockney’s iconic 1967 image of a Californian swimming pool and Jack Hazan’s film about Hockney’s life, it will bring together a range of key works by over 40 artists including Yves Klein, Jackson Pollock and Cindy Sherman. Moving through half a century of painting, video and photography, alongside archival and documentary material, this major group exhibition will show how the key period of post-war performance art has challenged and energised the medium of painting for successive generations. The show begins by exploring Hockney’s striking treatment of the splash in his major work A Bigger Splash 1967 against Jackson Pollock’s radical ‘action painting’ Summertime 1948, to examine the painted canvas as an arena in which performative gestures and experiments are acted out. It will go ... More

NEW YORK, NY.- Sotheby’s Important Watches & Clocks auction in New York on 4 December 2012 will be led by The Duc d’Orléans Breguet Sympathique, a distinguished example of the exceptionally rare Sympathique clocks that helped cement the fame and renown of French watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet. No other horological invention has been as consistently associated with the palaces and grand houses of the European royalty and aristocracy as the Breguet Sympathiques. The present example, named The Duc d’Orléans after its patron and dated to 1835, has the most complex Sympathique mechanism of all known examples: it is the only one known to wind, set time and regulate its accompanying pocket watch, via the integrated cradle mounted onto the clock’s pediment. This magnificent clock is further distinguished by having been in the celebrated Time Museum collection assembled by Seth Atwood*, and its winding ... More

JOHANNESBURG (AP).- An informer's tip led South African police to a private cemetery Tuesday where they found four paintings hundreds of miles away from where they had been stolen from a museum in the capital, authorities said. The tip is the latest twist in a heist that saw $2 million worth of art stolen Sunday from the Pretoria Art Museum by pistol-wielding thieves posing as eager students with their teacher. One oil painting of a South African township streetscape by artist Gerard Sekoto remains missing. A canine officer received a tip from an informer Tuesday that led him to a private cemetery in Port Elizabeth, a city about 1,100 kilometers (700 miles) from Pretoria, said Brig. Marinda Mills of the South African Police Service. There, under a bench near a memorial wall with plaques naming the dead, officers found four of the missing five pieces of art, she said. Mills said police had started to verify that the paintings found, all in good condition, were the originals. "Fro ... More

A rare Viking sword from the 9th Century, Lot 57, estimated to sell for £6,000 to £8,000 was found in 1887 in the mouth of the River Thieles, in Switzerland. Photo: Bonhams.

LONDON.- A stunning array of death-dealing swords from the Medieval period and earlier, including Viking weapons, form the main thrust of Bonhams sale of Antique Arms and Armour on November 28th in Knightsbridge. David Williams, Director of Arms and Armour at Bonhams, comments: “Many of these rare and remarkable weapons would have been used in battle. The scarring and damage goes some way to confirm this, though the years have also taken their toll.” He said that today the 24 Medieval and Viking swords were more likely to be used as decorative items thanks to the elegance of their archaic and sculptural forms.
Among the collection of swords in the sale from the distinguished Danish collector the late E.A. Christensen, there are some seven Viking swords dating from the 9th and tenth ... More

HONG KONG.- Bonhams, the leading international auction house for Chinese snuff bottles, announces the sale of the Paul Braga Collection of Snuff Bottles on 24 November 2012 at the Island Shangri-La Hotel. The Paul Braga Collection provides a window into old Hong Kong, a bygone age when snuff bottles were displayed in baskets in antique shops and could be bought for several dollars each. Paul Braga was a true connoisseur in an era when little of substance was published on the subject, and the holdings from the former Imperial collection in Beijing and Taipei had yet to be published. Using his own eye and experience, he built up his collection and popularised the subject, collaborating with fellow collectors to organise the first exhibition of snuff bottles in the Hong ... More

NEW YORK, NY.- Ricardo Rendón (born 1970) is a Mexican artist who lives and works in México City. His conceptual and minimalist work, as well as its unique visual language, makes him an artist emblematic of the young Mexican generation. For his first solo exhibition in New York, the Vicky David Gallery is presenting a series of works in felt material entitled "Open Works" from November 8, 2012 to January 12, 2013. Since 2003, Rendón has developed a unique reflection on the roles of the artist and the creation process in contemporary times. Reconsidering the nature of the practice of art, he questions the process of artistic creation and production. Whereas an increasing number of artists delegate execution to specialized companies, Ricardo Rendón produces his works independently because "new ideas come through the act of making". He sees his work as the commemoration ... More

A re-discovered monumental 1851 exhibition center piece Surtout de Table emerges from history at auction
DALLAS, TX.- When a magnificent, massive silver and gilt bronze Surtout de table, fashioned by famed French silversmith Jean-Valentin Morel (1794-1860) in 1851 for the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations in London, comes to auction on Dec. 5 (estimate: $600,000+), it will mark the re-discovery of a true masterpiece of silver craftsmanship. “Morel was obviously one of the greatest of his era and an artist of the highest caliber,” said Tim Rigdon, Director of Silver and Decorative Arts at Heritage, “but he was not the best of businessmen. His record is dotted with great work but also with failed partnerships and, ultimately, bankruptcy.” Morel was highly regarded in mid-19th Century Paris, with significant commissions for Pope Gregory III, the Kings of Sardinia and the Netherlands, as well as the Duc de Luynes, employing up to 80 craftsmen.
