Painting Roses in the Hill Country
and how cavewomen kept track of stuff....

Planning my Hill Country flower painting workshop to coincide with the Wine and Food Festival in Fredericksburg, Texas, was not intentional last month, but it sure was good fortune. My students and I decided to measure the impact of daily pastry consumption upon the effects of painting flowers. We concluded that, for the best results, it was important to have a different fresh pastry for breakfast each morning, in order to add that bit of mystery and excitement to the process, and a constant sugar rush was absolutely healthy so long as you had wine with dinner.

Which got me to thinking, as I was going through my post-it note lists and packing up all the important accoutrements of a successful workshop (cotton balls to prop open roses, CHECK, straws to hold up lazy daisy stems, CHECK, Dunkin Donuts coffee pods for the Keurig, CHECK...) how on earth did cavewomen keep everything organized without post-it notes? Maybe all those drawings of little men being eaten by scary animals with big teeth on cave walls were really warnings for their husbands not to be late after the Bison hunt.

But I digress! We had a wonderful three days, tackling subjects such as blue hydrangeas, gerbera daisies, larkspur and sunflowers in our afternoon paint-along sessions. In the mornings, the students got to sit and relax while the teacher produced three new large demo paintings. Along the way, we discovered several new yummy must-have colors, a fancy new camera that we all felt we really deserved, and we agreed that gals from Arizona have a lot more icky bugs to watch out for than Texans ever thought about squishing. Here are a few photos from the workshop in Fredericksburg, Texas, and some fabulously well organized students who produced bright, beautiful paintings one right after another!

My Half-Price Holiday Sale Is On!

My annual half-price sale is under way on my Web site, with 14 paintings on their way to new homes this week already! The Dallas Arboretum has announced we will not have Artscape in March 2013. Artscape is traditionally my only outdoor event, so I wanted to create a new event to say thanks to my best collectors. What better time than before the holiday rush begins?

Yesterday I mailed paintings to Nova Scotia Canada, Massachusetts, Georgia, and California. This morning seven more paintings went to Georgia. I think this is a sign I need to get out there and visit, don't you! All sale items on the Web site are priced as marked, but if you see something that makes your heart go pitty pat, don't hesitate to contact me!

But don't delay -  This sale will end soon!

The Winning Garden Photo Contest Winner Is...

Breezy Meadows Daisies and Hydrangeas is a new work, finished during my afternoon of teaching at the Good Art Company Studio School in Fredericksburg, Texas, last weekend. This was a great day for flowers in the Texas Hill Country because we announced the winner of the Paint Your Garden Photography Contest. Congratulations Janet Beal, for your beautiful photo. I'll be painting a free garden-scape just for you! We had dozens and dozens of amazing entries to the Good Art Company Gallery Pinterest page, making it extremely difficult to choose just one.

I can hardly wait to paint this wonderful cottage scene!
I think I may be even more excited than Janet!

A Best of Show Blue Ribbon......
...and giving for a very good cause!

I was delighted to learn that my donated painting, Dinner Date Daisies, won Best of Show for the Shining Stars Annual Art Event in Hurst, Texas in October. Shining Stars is the fundraising arm of the Arts Council Northeast, which has been providing scholarships and grants for youth art programs and students since 1985.

I've read in numerous art blogs how donating to charities doesn't give an artist return on investment, or sales, or glory. While some of this may be true, I do believe that giving to a cause you believe in will reap something more valuable than wealth. The dedicated volunteers who coordinate the Shining Stars events believe art is a necessity, not a luxury. I could not agree more!

Thank you to the outstanding volunteers who

coordinate this event year after year!
