EINDHOVEN.- The Van Abbemuseum asked the artists Ilya (1933) and Emilia (1945) Kabakov to organise an exhibition of their work together with that of El Lissitzky (1890-1941), as guest curators. For the Lissitzky – Kabakov exhibition they made an extensive selection from their own work and that of Lissitzky. It is the first time that the oeuvres of these famous 20th-century Russian artists are being presented together. Bringing together Lissitzky and the Kabakovs completes the circle which started with the revolutions in the early years of the twentieth century and finished with the upheavals of 1989. The confrontation between early Soviet art and that of the later Soviet era presents opportunities for a better understanding of the art and culture of the intervening period. ATHENS.- The Museum of Cycladic Art presents its new archaeological exhibition under the title ‘Princesses’ of the Mediterranean in the dawn of History, curated by the MCA’s Director Professor Nicholas Stampolidis, in collaboration with Dr Mimika Giannopoulou. The exhibition presents 24 examples of ‘princesses’ from Greece, Cyprus, Southern Italy, and Etruria from 1,000 to 500 BC, and over 500 artefacts. BONN.- In close cooperation with the Ernst Wilhelm Nay Stiftung in Cologne, the Kunstmuseum Bonn has conceived a comprehensive overview exhibition of Ernst Wilhelm Nay’s (1902, Berlin --- 1968, Cologne) gouaches, water colours and drawings. The exhibition includes 150 works on paper owned by the Stiftung, museums and private lenders, that describe Nay’s artistic development from the early »Lofoten-Bilder« up to the late »Scheiben-Kompositionen«. This compilation of works shows the equal status that gouache, water colour and painting have in Nay’s oeuvre in regard to his dealing with colour. BERLIN.- Aurel Scheibler inaugurated his new location at Schöneberger Ufer with FORM FARBE RAUM (Form Color Space), an exhibition which focuses on four German artists whose work very much evolved around these three elements: Hans Uhlmann (1900-1975), Willi Baumeister (1889-1955), Norbert Kricke (1922-1984) and Ernst Wilhelm Nay (1902-1968). FORM FARBE RAUM shows paintings, sculpture and works on paper mainly originating from the 1950s and 1960s. The exhibition runs from 8 December until 16 February. ‘Degenerate’ was a term which had made a whole contingent of Germany’s most influential and important artists non-entities for more than a decade. LUXEMBOURG.- Produced originally for the Venice Biennale in 1999 and presented in 2000 at the Renaissance Society of Chicago, Thomas Hirschhorn’s installation Flugplatz Welt/World Airport occupies for the Mudam exhibition an entire gallery space. Over an area of more than 400 m2, the Swiss artist installed an incredible number of objects reminiscent of an airport. One finds not only the runway, the planes in the colours of various airlines, the control tower, and the typical neon airport lighting: Hirschhorn also adds numerous other elements, such as gigantic silver spoons, altars with known brand shoes, as well as panels on which a profusion of newspaper cuttings evoking a highly varied range of subjects are displayed. PARIS.- Seventy-two contemporary artists are helping Madagascar. Using as their base materials doors and shutters hand-carved by Zafimaniry people from the high plateaux of Madagascar, they have created 72 works that invite us to look at Zafimaniry culture side by side with contemporary art. All proceeds from the sale of these works will go to help disadvantaged populations living on less than one US dollar a day. The inhabitants of the village of Antoetra, the source of Zafimaniry expertise, will thus have access to water, health, education and a dignified environment that respects their culture. ZURICH.- Clone, doppelganger, reflection? American-born and Parisian resident Sturtevant (born in Lakewood, Ohio) has been questioning the meaning of art and the traditional understanding of the artistic creation process for over half a century. Differentiating repetition in the Deleuzian sense and the question of the original in a reality shaped by simulacra are central to her approach to art, which is characterised by rigorous and tenacious thinking. FRIBOURG.- For many years, painting has been equated with notions such as permanence or skill; furthermore, it is an art form that excels in adapting to accidentality, temporariness or instability. The present exhibition focuses on the production of pictorial work as such: the determinism of selected materials, coincidences and temporary compositions appear to establish themselves as principles of construction, thus challenging the authoritarian vision of the work of art. In painting, the processes of negotiation, decision-making and resignation, the fluctuation between control and release therefore suggest that intention is nothing more than an initial step towards the self-empowerment of the work of art in itself. WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS.- —In a unique curatorial twist, the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute will launch Race to the Remix, a 48-hour competition that will determine the third installation of the uCurate exhibition. uCurate is an interactive program that invites users to design their own installations for a Clark gallery, using works featured in Clark Remix, an installation of some 400 works from the Institute’s permanent collection. The race begins at 5 pm on January 18, 2013 and will conclude at 5 pm on January 20, 2013. The winning exhibition will open to the public on March 23, 2013. More Mount Rushmore to be featured on new quarter KEYSTONE (AP).- Mount Rushmore will once again grace the side of a quarter when the U.S. Mint releases a new America the Beautiful quarter next year. Mount Rushmore National Memorial says the illustration portrays two workers on the sculpture finalizing the carving of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Washington will also appear on the heads side of the coin, in the typical depiction found on quarters currently in circulation.
