El Lissitzky, Lenin Tribune, scetch, 1920. Collection State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow.
EINDHOVEN.- The Van Abbemuseum asked the artists Ilya (1933) and Emilia (1945) Kabakov to organise an exhibition of their work together with that of El Lissitzky (1890-1941), as guest curators. For the Lissitzky Kabakov exhibition they made an extensive selection from their own work and that of Lissitzky. It is the first time that the oeuvres of these famous 20th-century Russian artists are being presented together. Bringing together Lissitzky and the Kabakovs completes the circle which started with the revolutions in the early years of the twentieth century and finished with the upheavals of 1989. The confrontation between early Soviet art and that of the later Soviet era presents opportunities for a better understanding of the art and culture of the intervening period. In addition to works from the collection of the Kabakovs and the Van Abbemuseum, there are loans from the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the Guggen ... More

BONN.- In close cooperation with the Ernst Wilhelm Nay Stiftung in Cologne, the Kunstmuseum Bonn has conceived a comprehensive overview exhibition of Ernst Wilhelm Nays (1902, Berlin --- 1968, Cologne) gouaches, water colours and drawings. The exhibition includes 150 works on paper owned by the Stiftung, museums and private lenders, that describe Nays artistic development from the early »Lofoten-Bilder« up to the late »Scheiben-Kompositionen«. This compilation of works shows the equal status that gouache, water colour and painting have in Nays oeuvre in regard to his dealing with colour. With good reason, Nay is considered the one German artist who after 1945 has realized most consequently colour as a paintings autonomous energy. The exhibition illustrates how his drawings make clear the ... More

BERLIN.- Aurel Scheibler inaugurated his new location at Schöneberger Ufer with FORM FARBE RAUM (Form Color Space), an exhibition which focuses on four German artists whose work very much evolved around these three elements: Hans Uhlmann (1900-1975), Willi Baumeister (1889-1955), Norbert Kricke (1922-1984) and Ernst Wilhelm Nay (1902-1968). FORM FARBE RAUM shows paintings, sculpture and works on paper mainly originating from the 1950s and 1960s. The exhibition runs from 8 December until 16 February. Degenerate was a term which had made a whole contingent of Germanys most influential and important artists non-entities for more than a decade. Prohibited to work, to exhibit, to even obtain canvas or paint, they were bereft of their livelihood and their essence. For many of them, employment in another professional environment or military service formed their official existence while the shadow side of life ... More

LUXEMBOURG.- Produced originally for the Venice Biennale in 1999 and presented in 2000 at the Renaissance Society of Chicago, Thomas Hirschhorns installation Flugplatz Welt/World Airport occupies for the Mudam exhibition an entire gallery space. Over an area of more than 400 m2, the Swiss artist installed an incredible number of objects reminiscent of an airport. One finds not only the runway, the planes in the colours of various airlines, the control tower, and the typical neon airport lighting: Hirschhorn also adds numerous other elements, such as gigantic silver spoons, altars with known brand shoes, as well as panels on which a profusion of newspaper cuttings evoking a highly varied range of subjects are displayed. These diverse elements were made of inexpensive materials, one of the hallmarks of his work: foils, ... LONDON.- Angela Flowers is one of the most prominent contemporary art dealers in the UK. She established her first gallery in an attic space above a left wing co-op in central London more than 40 years ago. Flowers Gallery now operates internationally out of three spaces: Shoreditch and Mayfair in London and Chelsea, New York. Angela is credited with an intuition that has seen her pre-figure the BritArt explosion and trail-blaze the artistic route to East London. She is one of few gallerists to have succeeded in guiding her business through five recessions, and on the way has helped to launch the careers of artists including Ian Breakwell, Tom Phillips, Nicola Hicks and Penelope Slinger. Quick to gain a reputation for presenting museum quality exhibitions, Angela has shown many of todays most recognised names in art, among them Anish Kapoor, Anthony Gormley, Ron Mueck, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Tony Cragg, Richard ... PARIS.- Seventy-two contemporary artists are helping Madagascar. Using as their base materials doors and shutters hand-carved by Zafimaniry people from the high plateaux of Madagascar, they have created 72 works that invite us to look at Zafimaniry culture side by side with contemporary art. All proceeds from the sale of these works will go to help disadvantaged populations living on less than one US dollar a day. The inhabitants of the village of Antoetra, the source of Zafimaniry expertise, will thus have access to water, health, education and a dignified environment that respects their culture. These doors and shutters hand-carved by the Zafimaniry are being exhibited in France for the first time. The skills of Zafimaniry sculptors have been placed by UNESCO since 2008 on the representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Madagascars needs are immense. ZURICH.- Clone, doppelganger, reflection? American-born and Parisian resident Sturtevant (born in Lakewood, Ohio) has been questioning the meaning of art and the traditional understanding of the artistic creation process for over half a century. Differentiating repetition in the Deleuzian sense and the question of the original in a reality shaped by simulacra are central to her approach to art, which is characterised by rigorous and tenacious thinking. Since the 1960s, Sturtevant has consistently repeated paintings, sculptures and installations with a view to exploring concepts like authenticity, authorship and representation for example, Andy Warhols flowers in 1965. The exhibition «Image over Image» brings together many of her ground-breaking repetitions of works by Warhol, Marcel Duchamp, Joseph Beuys, Jasper Johns and Félix González-Torres, six of ... CANNES.- « Your disregard of established values removes us from these cultural peons »...The note sent to André Villers by Robert Doisneau thirty years ago echoes the very sentiments of the photographer in his autobiography. A reading of the excerpts presented here is a testament in the image of the man himself to a simple and candid language, on occasion radical and not devoid of irony, which is quite clearly leagues removed from the convoluted gibberish typically spawned by the art world. You can also listen to it in this introductory interview to the visit, in the reflection of the poster dedicated to the Picasso, Paths of the South exhibition shown this summer, which is directly linked to the work of this photographer who captured metamorphosis and chance so well and whose 60-year career is being celebrated by La Malmaison Arts Centre today. FRIBOURG.- For many years, painting has been equated with notions such as permanence or skill; furthermore, it is an art form that excels in adapting to accidentality, temporariness or instability. The present exhibition focuses on the production of pictorial work as such: the determinism of selected materials, coincidences and temporary compositions appear to establish themselves as principles of construction, thus challenging the authoritarian vision of the work of art. In painting, the processes of negotiation, decision-making and resignation, the fluctuation between control and release therefore suggest that intention is nothing more than an initial step towards the self-empowerment of the work of art in itself. Although the works featured in the exhibition are not necessarily paintings, the reading and the perception that they convey directly evoke this register. A common trait shared by the artists is a more or less ostentatious anti-heroism; for some, this quality finds ... More

WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS.- In a unique curatorial twist, the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute will launch Race to the Remix, a 48-hour competition that will determine the third installation of the uCurate exhibition. uCurate is an interactive program that invites users to design their own installations for a Clark gallery, using works featured in Clark Remix, an installation of some 400 works from the Institutes permanent collection. The race begins at 5 pm on January 18, 2013 and will conclude at 5 pm on January 20, 2013. The winning exhibition will open to the public on March 23, 2013. When uCurate was launched earlier this year, the Clark announced plans to select three submissions for future installation in its exhibition galleries. The first, Giselles Remix, was created by eleven-year-old Giselle Ciulla after Clark curators reviewed more than 1,000 submissions; it runs through ... More Thea Djordjadze's sculptures, organisms and indeterminable landscapes on view at Malmo Konsthall MALMO.- Thea Djordjadze creates in a site-specific way. Although many of the objects are made in her studio, her works acquire their final form within their exhibition space; giving a work its final configuration and adapting it to the specific space are a crucial part of her approach. She often works to the very last moment, thereby keeping the relationship between the object and the space open as long as possible. The result is a kind of mutual transformation in which the art adapts to the space and the space to the art an organism composed of objects and the impressions those objects leave after themselves. A movement which leads on to the next one. Djordjadze creates sculptures, organisms and indeterminable landscapes traces and craters of modernism, impressions of something out of keeping with the times. More Low-water rivers offering up glimpse of history By: Jim Salter, Associated Press SAINT LOUIS (AP).- From sunken steamboats to a millennium-old map engraved in rock, the drought-drained rivers of the nation's midsection are offering a rare and fleeting glimpse into years gone by. Lack of rain has left many rivers at low levels unseen for decades, creating problems for river commerce and recreation and raising concerns about water supplies and hydropower if the drought persists into next year, as many fear. But for the curious, the receding water is offering an occasional treasure trove of history. An old steamboat is now visible on the Missouri River near St. Charles, Mo., and other old boats nestled on river bottoms are showing up elsewhere. Throughout its history, the mission of the GCTC has been to prepare and train cosmonauts for a variety of space flights through realistic simulation of space conditions here on earth. Michael´s first training phase included two major milestones: weightlessness in a spacewalk simulation with the heavy Orlan-M spacesuit in the gigantic water tank of the Hydrolab, and an Edge of Space flight with the famous Russian jetfighter MIG-29 where he was catapulted with supersonic speed into the stratosphere, reaching a height of 19,500 meters.
