LONDON.- In a crowded saleroom at Sotheby’s London, the art world witnessed an historic moment tonight when Raphael’s Head of a Young Apostle (c. 1519-20) dramatically set a new record at auction for the artist, when it achieved £29.7 million / $47.8 million / €36.6 million. Following an intense 17 minute battle between four bidders - both in the auction room and on the phones – the hammer came down on the winning bid which was cast on the telephone. The room erupted in a round of applause as the drawing - which came to sale from one of the greatest Old Master Drawings collections in the world, the Devonshire Collection at Chatsworth - achieved a price almost three times that of its pre-sale low estimate of £10-15 million. ... RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP).- Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, who designed much of the country's futuristic capital Brasilia, died Wednesday, his doctors said. He was 104. A pioneer in the use of reinforced concrete to produce soaring, curvaceous forms, Niemeyer has designed 600 works around the world and has some 20 other projects under way. The Brazilian icon, who won architecture's top award, the Pritzker Prize, in 1988, started his career in the 1930s and went on working well into the 21st century, after turning 100. "I am not attracted by the angles or the hard and inflexible straight lines created by man," Niemeyer once told the Spanish newspaper ABC. "What attracts me is the free and sensual curve, the curve which I find in the mountains of my country, in the flow of its rivers, ... More

The Author Hears the Story of Gillion de Trazegnies; Antwerp (detail view), after 1464, from the Roman de Gillion de Trazegnies, fol. 9. Lieven van Lathem (1430–1493).

LOS ANGELES, CA.- The J. Paul Getty Museum announced today the acquisition at auction of the Roman de Gillion de Trazegnies, an illuminated manuscript from Flanders by Lieven van Lathem (1430–1493). The work is considered one of the finest productions by Van Lathem, the most accomplished and sophisticated painter of secular scenes in the golden era of Flemish manuscript illumination. The Roman de Gillion de Trazegnies contains eight brilliantly painted half-page miniatures and forty-four historiated initials. The text of the book was rarely copied after its composition: the romance appears in only three other manuscripts. The work was on loan for the Getty Museum’s 2003 landmark exhibition Illuminating the Renaissance, where it was one of the highlights. “The acquisition of this richly illustrated manuscript by the greatest illuminator of the Flemish High ... Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853 – 1890), Self-Portrait, 1889. Oil on canvas. Collection of Mr. and Mrs. John Hay Whitney, National Gallery of Art, Washington.

PASADENA, CA.- The Norton Simon Museum presents an installation of Vincent van Gogh’s electrifying “Self-Portrait” from 1889, a highlight of the National Gallery of Art’s 19th-century collection. One of 36 self-portraits by Van Gogh, and among the last he painted, the work was executed as he recovered from a severe breakdown in Saint-Rémy in the summer of 1889. Its installation at the Norton Simon Museum is the first time the painting has been on view on the West Coast, and while Southern California is home to several outstanding works by Van Gogh, none of his self-portraits are in collections here. The loan is part of a special exchange program between the Norton Simon foundations and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., that brought Vermeer’s “A Lady Writing” and Raphael’s “Small Cowper Madonna” to the Simon in recent years. Some of the romantic letters and drawings the late Peanuts creator Charles Schulz sent to a young woman 23 years his junior. AP Photo/Sotheby's.

By: Ula Ilnytzky, Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP).- The late "Peanuts" creator Charles Schulz was once so infatuated with a young woman 23 years his junior he sent her dozens of romantic letters and drawings of his beloved cartoon characters. Many of the themes of that correspondence made it into his daily comic strips at the time. Now those love notes from 1970-1971 are being offered for sale at Sotheby's in New York by the family of Tracey Claudius, who the auction house says is ill at her home near Philadelphia. It's estimated the notes will fetch $250,000 to $350,000 at the Dec. 14 auction. Claudius met the cartoonist on March 16, 1970, while accompanying a friend on an interview assignment. She ostensibly came along as a photographer but afterward admitted in a letter to Schulz that it was a chance for her to meet her idol and thank him "for all the enjoyment Charlie Brown and that 'stupid beagle' provide me." She was 25. The married Schulz was 48. His comic strip ran for nearly half a century. Schulz died in ... More

The obelisk-shaped Dom Pedro gem. AP Photo/Don Hurlbert, Smithsonian Institution.

By: Brett Zongker, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP).- The world's largest cut aquamarine gem will soon go on display in its new home at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. The museum will unveil the obelisk-shaped Dom Pedro gem Thursday for long-term display. The blue-green crystal was mined in Brazil in the late 1980s and is named for Brazil's first two emperors. The gem was designed and cut by gem artist Bernd Munsteiner. It stands 14 inches tall and weighs 10,363 carats — or nearly 5 pounds. Cuts in the reverse faces serve to reflect light within the gem. National Gem Collection Curator Jeffrey Post said museum visitors will be drawn to it because of its color and large size as it joins the Hope Diamond and Marie Antoinette earrings on display. It's difficult to place a value on the gem, though it was offered to the Smithsonian in the late 1990s for $7 million to $10 million, Post said. In 2011, Jane Mitchell and Jeffery Bland of Palm Beach, Fla., donated the gem to the Smithsonian so it ... More

Record set at Kaminski Auctions for pair of rare English glass decanters
BEVERLY, MASS.- A pair of rare English glass decanters brought in on a Tuesday free appraisal day at Kaminski Auctions soared to a stunning $ 46,215, a record price for a pair of decanters. The consignor knew little of the history of the decanters, only that they belonged to his grandmother and had been in the family, sitting on the sideboard for years. Harry Morgan, Senior Appraiser for Kaminski, and glass expert, determined they were almost certainly 19th century, due to the sunburst stoppers and possibly Baccarat as they were one of the few companies producing glass of that quality at the time. They also featured a very a very large ground pontil, characteristic of Baccarat. The most unusual feature of the decanters was the transparent enameling depicting classical woman on each, later determined to represent the continents of Europe and America. Suspecting they were ... Julian Lennon launches photo exhibit in Miami

In his second visit to Miami to promote his photography, Lennon is selling about a dozen prints with prices ranging from $3,500 to $5,500, modest by the standards of the popular international Art Basel Miami Beach show. "I've been a philanthropist for all my life, and ... I've had many involvements in humanitarian and environmental issues," Lennon, 49, told AFP, referring to his WhiteFeather Foundation. "Whatever work I do, I've always put at least ten percent aside (for) my foundation," he said ahead of the show, which runs from December 6-9. "What we're trying to do here, and that's why I'm so happy to be part of this, is we're trying to make everybody else see that. Because ... More

American paintings, scarce contemporary works bring high prices at Swann Galleries' auction
NEW YORK, NY.- American Art made a strong showing at Swann Galleries’ November 15 auction of American Art & Contemporary Art, as did scarce examples by contemporary artists. Two lots sold for $60,000* apiece, making them the highest priced items in the auction: Andrew Wyeth’s The Mill House at Ivy Mills, Pennsylvania, watercolor, circa 1962, which had been a wedding gift to the consigner, and depicts the newlywed couple’s first residence; and Guy Wiggins’s The Avenue, oil on canvas, 1934, a lovely view of New York City in the snow. Another snowy city view by Wiggins was Winter on the Avenue at 42nd Street, oil on canvas, which brought $50,400. Interest in artwork by philosopher poet Kahlil Gibran remains high. On the heels of last spring’s record-setting prices for his watercolors, this sale saw a new record for his work, with Portrait of a Woman, watercolor and pencil, 1916, ... More
