LONDON.- Following a successful year Bonhams has finished 2012 with over 30 new world auction records. From vintage cars to contemporary African art Bonhams’ areas of expertise are ever expanding. The South African and Contemporary African art department have maintained their stronghold as global leaders. Ghanaian-born, Nigeria based El Anatsui’s ‘New World Map’ fetched £541,250, setting a world auction record for the artist at New Bond Street on 23rd May. World records were also set on 17th October at the South African Sale for Jacob Hendrik Pierneef’s ‘Cape farmlands’ fetching £289,250 and breaking its pre-sale estimate of £70,000-£100,000. DETROIT, MICH.- To commemorate the Civil War and the150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, the Detroit Institute of Arts presents a new installation of American art that explores the themes of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln and the abolition of slavery. The works will be on view beginning Dec. 27 and will become part of the permanent collection galleries in the Richard A. Manoogian Wing of American art. The works are: • Patriotic Bouquet (1861), George Henry Hall’s still life with red, white and blue flowers coming out of the muzzle of a rifle • At the Front (1866), George C. HELVOIRT.- Rarely seen masterpieces from the collection of drawings at the Van Gogh Museum are to be loaned to TEFAF Maastricht for a special exhibition when the Fair that defines excellence in art opens at the MECC (Maastricht Exhibition and Congress Centre) in the southern Netherlands from 15 to 24 March 2013. The 15 drawings loaned by the Amsterdam museum have been specially chosen to illustrate Vincent van Gogh’s development as an artist. SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- Bonhams have been chosen to represent the highly esteemed Oldenburg Family Automobile Collection at its second annual Scottsdale Auction in January. The extensive collection of more than 30 cars from the prominent horse breeding family includes multiple models of the same marque, including Ferrari and Jaguar. Leading the impressive assembly are the Italian thoroughbreds, which include the most sought-after Lamborghini ever produced and no less than five different Ferraris. The 1972 Lamborghini Miura SV is one of the definitive examples of the original supercar and this model – still retaining its original interior and colour scheme – is a stunning archetype in lustrous red with gold accents. SIOUX FALLS (AP).- The pipe organ has ruled the Christian worship sanctuary for centuries, and the majestic instrument continues to reign supreme in many Roman Catholic and mainline Protestant parishes. It's a tougher sell for congregations moving toward contemporary worship. The growth in praise-band led services, combined with a nationwide shortage of qualified organists, is prompting many congregations to leave pipe organs out of their new construction plans. Jerry Aultman thinks that's a mistake. The longtime organist and music professor at Southwestern Baptist Theological said the pipe organ doesn't need to be relegated to funerals and weddings, and it fits nicely into modern worship when used in the right way. Downstairs, they fit monkey magnets together at the "Tessellation Station." This is how math is presented at New York City's brand-new Museum of Mathematics, the only museum of its kind in the United States and a place where math is anything but boring. "Math's not just memorizing your multiplication tables," said Cindy Lawrence, the museum's associate director. "Math is a creative endeavor, and that's what we want people to realize."
