SIOUX FALLS (AP).- The pipe organ has ruled the Christian worship sanctuary for centuries, and the majestic instrument continues to reign supreme in many Roman Catholic and mainline Protestant parishes. It's a tougher sell for congregations moving toward contemporary worship. The growth in praise-band led services, combined with a nationwide shortage of qualified organists, is prompting many congregations to leave pipe organs out of their new construction plans. Jerry Aultman thinks that's a mistake. The longtime organist and music professor at Southwestern Baptist Theological said the pipe organ doesn't need to be relegated to funerals and weddings, and it fits nicely into modern worship when used in the right way. "We shouldn't abandon the organ in contemporary music styles," said Aultman, who plays ... More

NEW YORK (AP).- Squealing schoolchildren ride a square-wheeled tricycle and a "Coaster Roller" that glides over plastic acorns. Downstairs, they fit monkey magnets together at the "Tessellation Station." This is how math is presented at New York City's brand-new Museum of Mathematics, the only museum of its kind in the United States and a place where math is anything but boring. "Math's not just memorizing your multiplication tables," said Cindy Lawrence, the museum's associate director. "Math is a creative endeavor, and that's what we want people to realize." The museum, nicknamed MoMath, opened Dec. 15 on two floors of an office building north of Manhattan's Madison Square Park. It is the brainchild of executive director Glen Whitney, 42, a mathematician and former hedge fund analyst who helped raise $23.5 ... More

NEW YORK, NY.- No one is in a more respected position than Lark Mason to forecast the direction of new collecting trends, up or dawn. Thanks to his stellar position as an expert, appraiser, author, and television personality on the PBS series, The Antiques Roadshow, Mason, founder of iGavel Auctions, the online international network of regional auction salesrooms, anticipates trends far in advance of just anybody else. Here are his in-the-know predictions for What's Hot and What's Not for 2013: The Chinese economy is tied to the West which in today's world is not a good thing, but China is also benefiting from a rapidly growing group of consumers of which a portion want to own something from their past. The sheer numbers of buyers in China is staggering and the quantity of material limited - a classic supply and demand equation that will be with us for many more years. The Chinese are becoming ever more selective and di ... Hubert Schmalix, Untitled, 2012. Oil on canvas, 130 x 100 cm.
GRAZ.- Hubert Schmalix, intrepid protagonist of the wild youth art movement, celebrates his 60th birthday. An occasion he chooses to mark with a special exhibition of never-before-seen large format paintings in his hometown of Graz, Austria. To be precise, at Reinisch Contemporary, the gallery of his long-standing friend and early collector, Helmut Reinisch. With Colour Rain at the Bamboo Grove, Schmalix celebrates both a round birthday and a new series of paintings: his bamboo paintings deal with the plant as an epitome of exotic lifestyles; as an icon of the modern art and design canon. The seeming simplicity of the motif leads the eye of the observer straight to the delicacy of painting itself. Colouring and brush stroke almost entirely absorb the motif, or rather, the narrative content. Colour Rain at the Bamboo Grove encompasses the latest works by the seminal L.A.-based artist, wh ... More Major new multimedia project by Tadasu Takamine at Contemporary Art Center, Art Tower Mito IBARAKI.- The Contemporary Art Center, Art Tower Mito is presenting a major new multimedia project by Tadasu Takamine. One of Japan's preeminent contemporary artists and theater directors, Takamine is internationally known for a body of work that brims with both humor and a keen sense of criticality in relation to the systems of oppression and control that operate within contemporary society. Taking the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the recent Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster as two important benchmarks, Tadasu Takamine's Cool Japan investigates popular constructs of Japanese identity. Much of Takamine's work is inspired by doubts and misgivings regarding issues he encounters in daily life. These ideas are then given substantial form through an accumulation of research, encounters and dialogues with the local residents of the area where he is working. In ... The History of Religions series was acquired by the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art after the Oregon Centennial Exposition ended and has only been shown once, in 2007, since its inaugural exhibition in 1959. In 2010, the JSMA was the recipient of an IMLS American Heritage Preservation Grant for conservation of the murals. The 1959 Oregon Centennial Exposition was created to tell "The Oregon Story." One pavilion had the challenging task of representing the history of religious faiths. Carl Morris, arguably Portlands most accomplished painter at the time, was selected to paint ... This exhibition gives a representative overview of the work of an artist who has not only influenced art and cultural history but also museum practices in very deep ways stated Reto Thüring, the museums assistant curator of contemporary art. ...
