LENS (AP).- The Louvre has embarked on an ambitious quest — opening a €150 million ($196 million) extension in an abandoned coal mining town in northern France that has an unemployment rate nearly three times the national average. The "Louvre-Lens" project — housed in a futuristic glass and aluminum complex — opens this week in an attempt to silence critics who say French art is limited to the country's Parisian elite. Proponents say the complex will offer culture to the less cultivated provinces and give residents a unique opportunity to see high-end art. But for all its trumpeting of uniting everyone through art, the slick museum building instead highlights the contrasts with Lens' depressed city center, which is riddled with closed shops, abandoned houses, angry residents and a boarded-up cinema. French President Francois Hollande, who visited the museum on Tuesday, ... More

Frans Hals, Portrait of a clergyman, 1657.

AMSTERDAM.- From 5 December 2012, the Rijksmuseum Schiphol is celebrating its ten-year anniversary with an exhibition of paintings showcasing typical Dutch scenes: the Dutch countryside, Dutch waters, Dutch towns, Dutch royalty, Dutch people and their families. This is the Holland that everyone knows, as seen through the eyes of artists like Frans Hals, Johan Barthold Jongkind, Jan Toorop and Karel Appel. Together, these works present a foretaste of the renovated Rijksmuseum, which is set to reopen in its full glory on 13 April 2013 with a collection of more than 8,000 objects – showing the best that the Netherlands has to offer in art and history, from the Middle Ages to today. On 9 December 2002, His Royal Highness Prince Willem-Alexander opened the Rijksmuseum Schiphol. As a joint initiative of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, this one of a kind venture is the first art museum at ... More

OAKLAND, CA.- A confluence of events over the past two years has created an increased enthusiasm for collecting Islamic Art, according to Jan David Winitz, eminent art dealer and president of Claremont Rug Company. Citing the late 2011 opening of Metropolitan Museum of Art’s new gallery of Islamic Art as the key event, he said that art collectors have intensified their interest in rugs from the “Second Golden Age of Persian Weaving,” generally recognized as the period ca 1800 to ca 1910. In 2012, Winitz pointed to opening of a major permanent exhibit at the Louvre. As well, he noted an important Islamic art collection newly on display at the Indianapolis Museum of Art and another soon to be opened at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. He also noted that this year the de Young Museum in San Francisco began to display kilim rugs from its extensive collection of antique Oriental carpets for the first time in t ... More

Solo exhibition of works by American painter Martin Mull opens at Ben Brown Fine Arts   Design Miami celebrates its eight edition with thirty-five participating galleries   A dozen church painters from European countries seek to revamp ancient practice

LONDON.- Ben Brown Fine Arts present their third solo exhibition of works by American painter Martin Mull, whose new works reacquaint his London audience with the discordant promises of post-World War II suburban America he grew up with. Drawing equally from lifestyle magazines and life experience, Martin Mull cleverly appropriates visual material from both; his paintings function against the framework of flickering collective memory and within the cultural unrest and individual discontent of the present. Throughout his multi-faceted career in stand-up comedy, music, film and television, Mull has become well known as an ironist and satirist, however, the comedic quality of his paintings is contradicted by an equal amount of sorrow – he has moved beyond irony and satire to successfully achieve depth and meaning. Mull’s careful compositions are a continuation of the lineage of American sinister, broo- ... More

MOGOSOAIA (AFP).- With brighter hues and bolder brushstrokes, Orthodox icon painters are looking to breathe new life into the ancient art of depicting saints, angels and biblical scenes, lest its rigid rules see it consigned to history. A dozen church painters from European countries like Greece and Serbia but also from the United States gathered this month in Romania to experiment with adding modern touches to Byzantine iconography without angering the conservative Orthodox Church. "I don't want to attack them," US painting professor Anthony Salzman said of churchgoers, "but I don't want to bore them either". "Tradition died in the 16th or 17th century, now we are resurrecting it, we are learning what its limits are," he added at the event in Mogosoaia, on the outskirts ... More

Myanmar graffiti artists unhappy with new ban
YANGON (AP).- Graffiti artists in Myanmar are unhappy with a new ban on their handiwork in the country's biggest city, but expect many to carry on one way or another. Yangon city authorities imposed a ban Monday prohibiting anyone from drawing on public buildings, roads and bridges, as well as in schools and parks. Authorities said anyone defying the ban would face an unspecified punishment. The graffiti artists said Tuesday that the ban was not a surprise because authorities were copying regulations enacted in other countries. The artists also said they expected many to continue drawing, and urged authorities to provide a legal outlet for their work so they would not have to act illegally. "I cannot complain about the ban because many countries have such regulations. But the prohibition doesn't stop graffiti artists," said 19-year-old graffiti artist Arkar Kyaw, who became a minor celebrity ... More

Dinosaur skull seized from Wyoming home
By: Bob Moen, Associated Press
CHEYENNE (AP).- A dinosaur skull seized from a Wyoming home is related to an investigation into fossil smuggling from Mongolia, indicating that efforts to stem the illegal trade are making progress, an attorney said Monday. Robert Painter, a Houston attorney representing Mongolia President Elbegdorj Tsakhia, said officials hoped that such seizures will have a chilling effect on smuggling. "It's really part of what we hoped that would happen ... there would be increased awareness across the country of Mongolian law and the U.S. government is cooperating in protecting these cultural treasures," Painter said. He predicted there will be more such cases as word gets out about the illegal sale of Mongolian dinosaur bones. Louis Martinez, spokesman for the U.S. ... More
