And...how did I ever collect this many pairs of panty hose?
|
After throwing away 12 years worth of panty hose in a fit of glee this morning, it struck me: Being self-employed has its perks. Granted, it is past midnight and I am still working, but when everything you do makes you happy and excited, it's just darn hard to clock out and call it a day. I drove by that old glass office tower this morning, and already it seems like another world, a dimension I remember only dimly. I have such a long list of things I want to do ahead of me, I don't have time to reminisce or even celebrate, although there was a moment of jubilation when it occurred to me that I don't have to ask for vacation time in order to teach in New Hampshire this summer. I'm THE BOSS! *confetti* This is only my second letter to you since saying goodbye to Corporate America and my job as a magazine editor last month. I've heard a few folks say I am a Success Story, but I'm not really sure I can wear that badge until I get through at least one year as a full-time artist and art teacher. The cardboard box domicile under the interstate still haunts the edges of my consciousness, but each day something seems to fall into place that reminds me of one thing: When you step toward the path that is calling you, things fall into place. I recall walking into my college art teacher's home, Ivana Spalatin's small cottage in Commerce, Texas. She had painted the immortal words of Joseph Campbell across her lintel: "Follow your bliss." I've taken up the gauntlet, Ivana. I'm on my way. With each new turn in this path, I've discovered new joys. At some point I will have to pause again, and consider, to whom do I owe thanks for this immeasurable gift so late in my life? I think the answer is already there, waiting. The reward IS the journey. Thank you for walking with me every step of the way.

Painting New England Flower Gardens |
| Shed all those big city cares, leave the traffic and summer heat behind, and let's paint together in beautiful Haverhill, New Hampshire this summer! Put a little joy in your brush and learn to make New England flowers bloom in brilliant color in this 3-day workshop at the historic Gibson House Bed and Breakfast. This will be a very small workshop, with plenty of one-on-one time for each and every student. Overlooking the Upper Connecticut Valley and the Green Mountains of Vermont, Haverhill is picture-perfect New England, and a beautiful place for an artist's retreat. I can hardly wait to see you there!

A tip from the flower architect of Coronado |
How to make your flower garden stand out from the crowd
|
Thank you to everyone who joined me this year for my solo show on Coronado Island in Southern California. I was delighted so many friends traveled out for the show, even a large contingent of wonderful Facebook pals! One of the highlights of the trip was meeting master gardener Juan Flores, the architect of my favorite cottage garden. Even though the 88th Annual Flower Show on the island was about to begin, and he had some award winning entries to deliver, Juan took the time to share some of his favorite tips for fabulous blossoms.
"I always include something unexpected," Juan said, pointing to a spiny tropical plant with a thorny trunk and brilliant orange flowers, nestled amidst the foxglove and delphiniums. "Sometimes my clients like for every flower to be perfect, but I always encourage them to consider adding something new each year, something different. To me, this is what Mother Nature likes. Not perfection, but something the eye will come back to." Juan said every year he changes out all the soil in this garden, replacing it with soil enriched with chicken manure. His garden is in the top 10 best winners on the island every year, and he is charged with caring for all of the island memorials that line the center of Orange Avenue, which runs through the heart of downtown. I loved hearing what Juan said about tossing in a bit of the unexpected, it seemed to reinforce what I share with my students - Mother Nature isn't perfect - to paint an authentic flower or garden, you have to remember the brown leaves, the little spots, the broken petals - all the things that tell the viewer, this is real, this is a true garden, and a place where the eye and the soul can rest.
