Shifting gears to a life of full-time art
Celestial Gardens of Color
I'm still waking up each morning, a month after quitting my corporate job as a publishing director, living a life in between. Between the time when I should have put on office clothes, braved the Dallas traffic, and spent my day in a glass building. Instead I am waking up each morning with snoring pugs curled around me, the sunshine streaming in, and knowing that my day will be filled with art, packing and shipping paintings, ordering supplies and fresh flowers for classes, and moving through a life filled with color. Strive for remarkable in your studio every day! And eat plenty of chocolate while you're awaiting its arrival.... There are no days off, no holidays, no evenings when I'm not working, and these are the best hours I've ever had. I've leaped off the treadmill and chosen a path of freedom. I'm walking into the wilds away from the corporate jungle...and hoping for the best. Plus, now I have 24-7 access to the secret stash of chocolate in the refrigerator. But that's enough soliloquizing - let's you and I and the pugs go paint in the iris garden today! |

You Are Invited! Painting in the Garden on Coronado Island You are cordially invited to join me for my annual solo show in Coronado, California, on Saturday, April 20, in the garden of Art and Frames by Wood Gallery on Orange Avenue. For flower fanatics, Coronado Island is heaven on earth during this 88th Annual Flower Show week. (We won't go into details about the year I was escorted out of the Flower Show, suffice to say that if you're not a judge, you really shouldn't be wandering around in that tent with your camera going 90 mph). Click Here to See My Coronado Painting Video! Stop by Starbucks next door and grab an iced coffee, and then join me Saturday from 11:30 am to 4:30 pm. I'll be painting a new container garden from fresh flower models in the sunshine. We'll have refreshments and, if we're lucky, the official Coronado Island Welcome Committee Bird will serenade us again this year! Art and Frames by Wood Gallery will be displaying my entire collection of four foot wide and larger container garden paintings, so don't delay, there's bound to be a flower color combination that will tickle your fancy! An Iris Garden Early Morning Stroll
The new iris blossoms are singing with color this week at Flower Mound Studio - the rhizomes (aren't you proud, Joe and Donna Spears, I didn't call them bulbs?) we planted last year took off like gangbusters and a whole crop of multicolored lovelies are filling the beds. It's like an iris jungle or something out there! Get your comfy shoes on and your sun hat and let's see what's new, but beware, you may just stumble upon a snorfley faced jungle pug or two intertwined in the greenery! Click Here for My Iris Movie! Disclaimer - Watch out for jungle pugs in the wildly windy iris fronds! Ice Blue Flowers With Orange Bellies - Divine! Grape Soda irises that smell like grape soda The red rose arbor is a nice backdrop for the white and blue blossoms! Do you see the ridges where new flowers will emerge soon? Cup of Sunshine Daisies and Oranges
16X20, Oil on Archival Panel April Demos and Famous Pug Visitors
It's been a busy month in Flower Mound Studio, with weekend workshops and demos for art groups around the state. I was delighted to have a special surprise celebrity visitor during my painting for the Rockwall Art League. Just before the evening event began, in through the door strolled a fat, happy little pug named Wilbur. His servant explained that Wilbur was a great admirer of art, yes, but it was more likely he wanted to check out the refreshment table in the back of the room. I'll be teaching in Fredericksburg, Texas, in just a few weeks, during the peak bloom for the Hill Country wildflowers, so I hope to see you there! Here are a few of my extremely talented students from my class in Irving last weekend, showing off their white hydrangeas! Click here for workshop info! Hoo Boy - I need to work on my tan! Big smiles for a talented group of ladies! |
Two of a Kind Hydrangeas in the Garden

A New Two-Day Flower Painting Workshop
These blue hydrangeas were the models for my class demonstration this weekend, posing in a blue lace pot alongside yellow and white daisies. My hydrangea garden is about to begin blooming in the back yard, right next to a plethora of irises! I've had several students request a hydrangea workshop, so I'm dedicating at least one day of my new 2-day workshop in North Texas to painting hydrangeas, May 17-18, at the Jaycee Parks Center for the Arts. We'll use big strokes to make bold, bright florals you are sure to enjoy for years to come. Put a little joy in your brush and join me! Read more about my 2-day workshop here... My First St. Louis, Missouri, Workshop!
I'm very excited that I've been asked to teach by the Greater St. Louis Art Association! Put a little joy in your brush and meet me in St. Louis July 12, 13 and 14 - in my home town, to make flowers bloom in brilliant colors in a place with culture, history, great restaurants, and an outstanding botanical garden. This will be a fun 3-day workshop with six demonstration paintings. Painting together step by step in the afternoons, students will take home three completed works of art. I'll share all my favorite tips for creating beautiful floral paintings on a transparent background, and how to make your flowers look authentic and beautiful. Click here for more information... The new boss caught napping on the job! Coworker challenges in Flower Mound Studio The new job as a full-time artist has been going well so far, although the new boss has kept things interesting. We had our first PR crisis Monday when her majesty passed out in the middle of the studio floor. She snored loudly, oblivious to odd looks from coworkers and the inevitable Facebook photo postings which followed. Later that afternoon, after she roused herself for her lunch break, I received my first performance evaluation, with demerits for "Responds to supervisor demands swiftly and without delay even when it is raining outside and throwing the ball results in mud everywhere." Fortunately, she reconsidered the score after I reminded her I was the only person on staff who could open the refrigerator door. My coworkers, doing what they do best... awaiting lunch!
