JAHANABAD (AP).- When the Taliban blew the face off a towering, 1,500-year-old rock carving of Buddha in northwest Pakistan almost five years ago, it fell to an intrepid Italian archaeologist to come to the rescue. Thanks to the efforts of Luca Olivieri and his partners, the 6-meter (nearly 20-foot)-tall image near the town of Jahanabad is getting a facelift, and many other archaeological treasures in the scenic Swat Valley are being excavated and preserved. Hard-line Muslims have a history of targeting Buddhist, Hindu and other religious sites they consider heretical to Islam. Six months before the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, the Taliban shocked the world by dynamiting a pair of 1,500-year-old Buddhist statues in central Afghanistan. The Jahanabad Buddha, etched high on a huge rock face in the 6th or 7th century, is one of the largest such carvings in South Asia. It was attacked in the fall of 2007 when the Pakistani Taliban swarmed across the scenic Swat Valley. The army drove mos ... More

This perspective on the collection’s assets once again exemplifies the high standards as well as the diversity a museum like the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart can offer. A foundation active since 1986, the “Konrad Kohlhammer-Stiftung” concentrates primarily on international printmaking of the mid-twentieth century onwards. Particularly Konrad Kohlhammer’s acquisitions in the area of American art have contributed decisively to shaping the international status of the Department of Prints, Drawings and Photographs. Several of the large marble paving stones were etched with children's board games, while others were marked by horse-drawn cart wheels. Also discovered at the site were remains of tools and lamps, as well as the bases of marble columns. Viki Tzanakouli, an archaeologist working on the project, ... More

NEW YORK (AP).- A final steel beam was lifted Monday atop a new World Trade Center skyscraper — the first expected to open at the site next year since the twin towers were decimated on 9/11. With gospel superstar BeBe Winans offering a powerful rendition of "God Bless America," workers raised their hardhats in tribute as the mammoth beam rose slowly into the Manhattan sky, swaying from a steel rope hoisted by a crane. A U.S. flag attached to the bottom of the beam fluttered above several hundred spectators at the topping-off ceremony. "Ten years later, it's pretty remarkable," said a teary-eyed Sally Rexach, a nurse who aids workers constructing 4 World Trade Center. She was at ground zero just after Sept. 11, 2001, supporting workers who combed through the smoking debris in search of human remains. "This is a very proud moment; it's full ... More

Erwin Wurm, The artist who swallowed the world, 2006, mixed media, 190 x 140 x 140 cm.

THE HAGUE.- This summer, the Gemeente Museum Den Haag presents the first ever major Dutch retrospective of one of the best-known contemporary artists of our day: Austrian sculptor Erwin Wurm (b. 1954). His work has evolved into a humorous universe in which he himself, his audience, articles of clothing, thoughts or actions can all become pieces of sculpture. Wurm directs his light-hearted criticism against the consumer society of today. His Fat Houses and Fat Cars series, for example, poke fun at the use of luxury homes and automobiles as status symbols, while simultaneously referring to the obesity that threatens the health of Western nations. His Instructions on How to be Politically Incorrect, such as ‘spit in someone’s soup’ or ‘pee on someone’s carpet’, are equally good examples of the ironic tone he adopts. However, Wurm is best known for his One Minute Sculptures, in which – with ... More

LONDON.- To coincide with a major Diane Arbus exhibition at the Martin Gropius Bau in Berlin this summer, Timothy Taylor Gallery announced Diane Arbus: Affinities, an exhibition of thirty-two photographs made over the course of the artistʼs career. Several of the photographs have never been exhibited before in the UK. Arbus explored the notion of affinities – the elements that humans share, as well as those they donʼt – throughout much of her mature work (1956-71). A deep interest in likenesses, disguises, in bonds, alliances and allegiances is a recurring theme.
Arbusʼs carefully considered titles – all for works to be included in the present exhibition – eloquently convey the depth and variety of her interests: • A naked man being a woman, N.Y.C. 1968 • A blind couple in their bedroom, Queens, N.Y. 1971 • Russian midget friends in a living room on 100th Street, ... It features some of the oldest and most valuable images of the Aerofilms Collection, a unique and important archive of over 1 million aerial photographs taken between 1919 and 2006. The Aerofilms Collection embodies all that is exciting about aerial photography. Many shots were taken in the early days of aviation by ex-First World War pilots, from extremely low altitudes, a technique which was very dangerous. It shows just how far their pilots were willing to go for a great photograph. The photographs ... More

Leak shuts down Battleship Texas indefinitely
By: Ramit Plushnick-Masti, Associated Press
LONDON.- The 100-year-old Battleship Texas, the last remaining dreadnaught that fought in World Wars I and II, closed indefinitely Monday as staff try to repair several holes allowing nearly 2,000 gallons of water per minute into the vessel, the ship's manager said Monday. The leaks plaguing the ship, which fought as the USS Texas, have highlighted the need to enact a multimillion dollar plan to dry dock the vessel, removing it from the salty waters of Buffalo Bayou and the Houston Ship Channel, where it has sat for several decades. "The ship is not as good as she was. She's leaking, again," Smith said, the frustration clear in his voice. "I think she's getting persnickety in her old age." The vessel first closed to the public earlier this month ... More
