A public water reservoir dating to the First Temple period found next to the Western Wall

Israel's Antiquities Authority archeologist Eli Shukron, stands inside an ancient public water reservoir, near the Western Wall, the holiest site where Jews can pray, in Jerusalem's Old City. The finding shows that the Jerusalem’s water consumption during the First Jewish Temple period was not solely based on the output of the Gihon Spring, but it also relied on public reservoirs, according to Shukron the excavation director. JERUSALEM.- A large rock-hewn water reservoir dating to the First Temple period was discovered in the archaeological excavations that are being conducted in the Jerusalem Archaeological Garden at the foot of Robinson’s Arch. The excavations at the site are being carried out by the Israel Antiquities Authority, underwritten by the ʽIr David Foundation and in cooperation with the Nature and Parks Authority. The impressive reservoir was presented together with other finds from this past year at the 13th annual conference on the “City of David Studies of Ancient Jerusalem” to be held in Jerusalem. The excavation, during the course of which the reservoir was discovered, is part of an archaeological project whereby the entire drainage channel of Jerusalem dating to the Second Temple period is being exposed. The channel runs north along the City of David spur, from ... More

Green Art Gallery Dubai presents "Wounds", a new series of works by Syrian photographer Jaber Al Azmeh   Phillips de Pury & Co. announces highlights from its Contemporary Art Under the Influence auction   Solo exhibition of historical and recent works by Braco Dimitrijević at Sperone Westwater

Jaber Al Azmeh, The People, 2012 (detail). Printed on cotton paper, ed of 3, 50 x 75 cm.

DUBAI.- For the opening of the fall season, Green Art Gallery is presenting ‘Wounds’, a series of works by Syrian photographer Jaber Al Azmeh. This series began and evolved along with the revolutionary movements happening in Syria during the crucial first ten months that the country was in turmoil. Photographing individuals from his social circle, including those who were actively part of the revolutionary movement, Al Azmeh asked his subjects to re-enact and perform the stories that they had witnessed or heard about from what was happening in the streets. As the protests and violence increased, Al Azmeh along with many other activists and critics of the current regime had to leave their country for their own safety. Isolated and left with only stories that he heard about the events unfolding within Syria, Al Azmeh eventually became the protagonist of his own work, re-enacting and photographing himself as he transf ... SITTARD.- Jota Castro (Lima, Peru, 1965), a French-Peruvian artist living in Brussels, Belgium, is one of today’s most prominent activist artists. At the end of the 1990s he retired from his work as a diplomat at the European Union and the United Nations to devote himself fully to his activities as an artist and curator. Castro has curated exhibitions including The Fear Society / Pabellón de la Urgencia for the 2009 Venice Biënnale and more recently, Dublin Contemporary 2011. In his artistic work, he exposes the machinations of contemporary (consumer) society, sometimes with biting, politically incorrect humor, and he champions the protection of intellectual freedom and democracy. Castro’s exhibition at Museum Het Domein deals with problems caused by the global economic crisis and developments in European politics. In a 2005 interview with Jerôme Sans, Jota Castro posited that ‘Society is changing and the powe ... More

ATHENS, GA.- The Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia presents a definitive exhibition of large-scale works by the American sculptor De Wain Valentine from Sept. 8, 2012, to Jan. 27, 2013. The exhibition, “De Wain Valentine: Human Scale,” features eight translucent sculptures, most measuring between six and eight feet tall. Valentine was already working with plastics when he moved from Colorado to the California coast in 1965, where he began a “love affair with the sea and the sky” and sought to render them in his art. He and his peers using similar materials—Larry Bell, Robert Irwin, Helen Pashgian, Peter Alexander and others—got the label “Finish Fetish” from critics, implying an obsession with material that was attributed to the region’s aerospace industry and surfboard and car culture. Although he was the most technically advanced of the group (he partnered w ... More

LINCOLN, MASS.- DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum presents PLATFORM 10: Dan Peterman, the tenth project in the PLATFORM series. Since the 1980s, Chicago-based artist Dan Peterman has worked at the intersection of art and ecology. Through the creation of minimal sculptures, installations, and functional objects that often rely upon reclaimed, reconfigured, or recycled materials, Peterman explores how art can be at once critical and poetic, socially engaged and subtly provocative. As part of the ongoing PLATFORM series, in which artists are invited to present work which responds to deCordova’s unique indoor and outdoor spaces, Peterman has sited his reprocessed plastic sculpture—Love Podium (2006)—on the Main Entrance Plaza of the museum as a functional stage for visitor debates and spoken word performances. Trees and Stones: Andrea Branzi's first exhibition in the United States opens at Friedman Benda
NEW YORK, NY.- On September 11th, Friedman Benda will present Trees and Stones, Andrea Branzi’s first gallery exhibition in the United States. An exemplary social thinker, professor, architect, and designer, Branzi has been a fundamental influence on contemporary design in Italy and abroad since the early 1960s. Here he offers the latest works in his Trees series and unveils a new body of work, Stones, beside it. Since his emergence at the forefront of the 1960s and 1970s Italian radical design movements, Branzi has sought to reconcile design and architecture with the challenges of contemporary society. He was among the first thinkers to consider and integrate issues of unlimited supply, the mass-production of images and products, and the over-saturation of cities with conflicting aesthetics. Decades of thought-work and experimentation have produced Trees and Stones, gestures ... More

Berlin sculptor Jürgen Drescher opens first exhibition in Brussels at Galerie Rodolphe Janssen
By: Barbara Buchmaier
BRUSSELS.- What do you get? The artist asks the viewer: “What do you get?” What can I convey through my works? How much of that comes through to you? There is no unambiguous answer to these questions, because usually no surveys are carried out, and it is surely also always a question of viewers’ readiness and mood, of their taste, and of their previous experience—all of which shape their reactions. In his first solo exhibition in Brussels, the Berlin sculptor Jürgen Drescher (b. 1955) has created a distinctive mise-en-scène of a selection of three-dimensional objects; some of these have been executed in two different forms and are presented in a juxtaposition of sorts. In his work, the artist constantly interrogates the socio-political potential of art and ... More

London-based artist Kevin Francis Gray's first exhibition with Haunch of Venison opens in New York
NEW YORK, NY.- Haunch of Venison is showing London-based artist Kevin Francis Gray’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. The exhibition showcases several of Gray’s porcelain, bronze and marble sculptures that merge elements of both classicism and the sculpted human form with an aesthetic that contextualises the work firmly within the visual landscape of contemporary society. Drawn heavily from both popular culture and the gritty reality of an uncompromised urban life, Gray’s subjects are people from the neighborhood surrounding his studio in London who he approached in chance meetings on the street. Gray frequently works with his subjects on multiple pieces, forming a lasting relationship between the artist and sitter. Depicted in classical form with materials often reserved for immortalizing grand historical figures, Gray’s work injects dignity and admiration into an often ... More
