Frida Kahlo, her real look, on display at the Frida Kahlo Museum in Mexico City

A leather corset that belonged to late Mexican artist Frida Kahlo is displayed at the Frida Kahlo museum in Mexico City, Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012. A full collection from Kahlo's wardrobe will go on public display Nov. 22 in Mexico City after being locked for nearly 50 years in her armoires and dressers: jewelry, shoes and clothes that still carry the scent of the late artist's perfume and cigarette smoke or stains from painting. MEXICO CITY (AP).- The women on the cocktail circuit of the late 1930s were all curve-hugging dresses and gelled curls. Not Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo. She graced dinner parties and theaters from Paris to New York in ribbons, full skirts and loose peasant blouses embroidered with vividly colored flowers, and her uni-brow was a bold contrast to the pencil-line eyebrows of the time. Over the years, Kahlo's look has become as influential as her art, capturing the fancy of trendsetters from Madonna to French designer Jean Paul Gaultier. There are YouTube tutorials on how to braid hair like she wore hers, and Vogue Italy lets readers know where to shop for Kahloesque skirts and jewelry. Now, a full collection from her wardrobe is going on display in Mexico City after being locked away for nearly 50 years in her armoires and dressers: jewelry, shoes and clothes that still carry the scent of the late artist's perfume and cigarette smoke or stains from painting. WASHINGTON, DC.- The National Gallery of Art explores how the practice of making multiple portraits of the same subjects produced some of the most revealing and provocative photographs of our time in The Serial Portrait: Photography and Identity in the Last One Hundred Years, on view in the West Building's Ground Floor photography galleries from September 30 through December 31, 2012. Arranged both chronologically and thematically, the exhibition features 153 works by 20 artists who photographed the same subjects—friends, family, and themselves—numerous times over days, months, or years to create compelling portrait studies that investigate the many facets of personal and social identity. "The Gallery's photography collection essentially began with the donation of Alfred Stieglitz's 'key set,' so it is fitting that this exhibition opens with portraits by Stieglitz, who understood that a person's character was best captur ... The spirit of the Samurai lives on at Bonhams

Jeff Robb pushes the boundaries in 3D image making in new exhibition at Mauger Modern Gallery
LONDON.- Robb’s Macroland works are effectively inverted windows on to a unique experience of pure colour - 'inverted' because, as the viewer, each framed image projects back at you. Compositions deconstruct before your eyes in dazzling 3D with an illusion of extraordinary depth. You need to stand back from, peer in to and walk around these works to see them 'in the round' and to get the most from them; the experience is immersive. The success of Robb's work lies in his mastery of 3D film and photographic processes. Indeed his art is hard to classify. The artist himself, who received considerable media attention this year for producing a 3D series of photographic portraits of The Queen for light artist Chris Levine, describes his work as “somewhere between traditional photographic recording and 3D sculpture”. When you approach an original Macroland piece, you encounter a 3D space ... More

The museum will feature some of the band's glitzy stage costumes, instruments and other mementos that were displayed in the ABBAWORLD exhibition that toured Europe and Australia in 2009-2011. Ulvaeus said he hoped all four former ABBA members would attend the opening, set for April or May, but ruled out any chance of a stage comeback. "We are the only group ... More

Ancient Austrian remains show woman in male trade
VIENNA (AP).- An Austrian museum says skeletal remains found in an ancient grave are that of a woman metal worker — the first indication that women did such work thousands of years ago. The Museum of Ancient History says the grave originates from the Bronze Age, which began more than 5,000 years ago and ended 3,200 years ago. In a statement Wednesday, it said that although the pelvic bones were missing, examination of the skull and lower jaw bone shows the skeleton is of a woman. The museum says tools used to make metal ornaments were also found in the grave northwest of Vienna, leading to the conclusion that it was that of a female fine metal worker. It says such work had been commonly presumed to be in the male domain. ... More
