LONDON.- Christie's has been entrusted with Guinevere - Celebrating Fifty Years, an anniversary auction marking the first half a century of the popular and luxurious interiors shop, to be held in the South Kensington saleroom on 19 March 2013. Originally founded by French hat designer Genevieve Weaver in 1963, and now owned by her two sons Kevin and Marc, Guinevere Antiques remains a very personal, family-run business with a famous shop-front spanning the length of four shops. The eclectic mix of styles and eras showcased throughout the extensive premises on the Kings Road, London reflects the taste of the brothers who travel the world collecting fascinating objects and décor. WASHINGTON (AP).- "Breakfast at Tiffany's," ''Dirty Harry" and "A League of Their Own" will be preserved for their enduring significance in American culture by the Library of Congress, along with "A Christmas Story" and some pioneering sports movies. They are among 25 selections the library is inducting Wednesday into the National Film Registry. Congress created the program in 1989 to preserve films for their cultural or historical significance. The latest additions bring the registry to 600 films that include Hollywood features, documentaries, independent films and early experimental flicks. The newest movie chosen for preservation is 1999's "The Matrix," noted for its state-of-the-art special effects and computer-generated animation with a style that drew on Hong Kong action films and Japanese anime to change science fiction ... CARDIFF.- Visitors to National Museum Cardiff now have another chance to see Rembrandt van Rijn's (1606-1669) Portrait of Catrina Hooghsaet, which is on special loan from Penrhyn Castle thanks to support from the Welsh Government. Museum visitors have the opportunity to enjoy the Portrait of Catrina Hooghsaet (1607-1685) until Sunday 17 February 2013, when it will return to Penrhyn Castle near Bangor - its home since the 1860s. A prolific painter, draftsman, and etcher, Rembrandt is usually regarded as the greatest artist of the Dutch "Golden Age." The portrait of the wealthy Amsterdam lady, painted in 1657, is an example of Rembrandt's outstanding talent for painting characters, not just faces. LONDON.- Following discussions with the Art Fund, the London Borough of Bromley has written to Tower Hamlets Council to assert ownership of Henry Moore’s Draped Seated Woman (known as ‘Old Flo’) following significant new evidence. In October this year, Tower Hamlets Mayor Lutfur Rahman announced his decision to sell the sculpture after "unprecedented" budget cuts. Despite calls and requests from lawyers acting on behalf of the Art Fund and others for Tower Hamlets Council to produce evidence of ownership, it has failed to do so. Lawyers acting for the London Borough of Bromley, the Art Fund charity and others now say new research shows Tower Hamlets Council’s claim over ownership to be incorrect and the sale of ‘Old Flo’ cannot go ahead. NEW YORK, NY.- Sotheby’s annual December auctions of Important Judaica and Israeli & International Art brought a combined total of $7,908,754 today in New York, and many first time buyers participated in both sales, including purchases of some of the major top lots. Collectively, the sales were led by A Magnificent Passover Haggadah by Aaron Wolf Herlingen, which sold for $962,500. The Important Judaica sale totaled $4,056,191, within the pre-sale estimate of $3.9/5.7 million. The sale this afternoon of Israeli & International Art brought a total of $3,852,563, against a pre-sale estimate of $3.5/4.98 million and was highlighted by a group of works by celebrated artist Reuven Rubin. The morning sale of Important Judaica was led by top prices for manuscripts and paintings. BEIJING (AFP).- Andy Warhol's famous portraits of Mao Zedong will be excluded in a major show of his work in China, organisers said Wednesday, although they stopped short of saying they had been censored. The exhibition to mark the 25th anniversary of the American artist's death, which is currently touring Asia, features more than 300 of his works including 10 acrylic and silkscreen portraits of the former Chinese leader. But the US-based Andy Warhol Museum which is organising the tour said the Mao images will be dropped from the Beijing and Shanghai legs next year. ATLANTA, GA.- The High Museum of Art will host the fourth annual Collectors Evening on Jan. 11, 2013. Seven works will be presented for acquisition during the evening, one from each of the High’s curatorial departments. Attendees will cast their ballots, and the High will purchase the works of art with the most votes. The number of acquisitions will depend on funds raised via benefactors and ticket sales.
