Saying Farewell to Corporate America
Goodbye Heels, Hello Flip Flops! It's official. This morning I traded heels and hose for flip flops and paintbrushes. I said goodbye to corporate America and became a full-time artist. For the past 12 years I've balanced a career as the editor of a medical magazine with my painting and teaching. There have been few days off, and very little sleep, but it's a small price to pay for following my dream. How does it feel? friends ask. Are you relieved, excited, scared? Truth is, I'm in full blown sensory overload, feeling all of that and then some, plus a little hungry and wondering if donuts are sold anywhere after 11 am. When I told Studio Director AnnieBee I'd be working from home from now on, here's what she had to say: Click Here and Brace Yourself! Instead of board meetings and budget spreadsheets, I'll be painting flowers and prepping canvases. My new office attire will be paint spattered jeans and tennis shoes (although barefoot is equally agreeable). I mentioned to hubby that he will need to get three jobs to support the pugs and I in the manner to which we are accustomed, but hopefully that won't be the case. My goal is to begin teaching all over the US, and the world, so I have a bit of work ahead! Two years ago I began teaching flower painting at the Dallas Arboretum. In the past few weeks, I've shipped paintings to Australia, Canada, California, Colorado, Florida, Kentucky, Delaware, Louisiana, Illinois and quite a few spots right here in Texas. All signs are pointing in one direction - to the easel! And to think, no more early morning panic attacks thinking I've overslept or reliving the moment when I accidentally disconnected an entire conference call with 42 doctors on the line. So much to miss, so little time! I'm taking a leap of faith, even if it means burning some midnight oil. Thanks for walking this long road with me, even sticking by me for the uphill parts! It should be interesting to see what's around the next bend... |
Dallas Blooms Tulips and Artscape Updates
There is no better time of year to visit the Dallas Arboretum than during the Dallas Blooms Festival, happening right now! March on a weekday is even better, since parking at 9 am is a bit more plentiful. I spent my first day (today!) as an official full time artist, former editorial director, right here. I'll be sharing the best photos from my stroll around the gardens with you on my art blog soon. For my art friends wondering when Artscape will occur, the event has been postponed until spring 2014 to make way for construction of the new children's gardens. If you would like to see my newest collection of paintings, you are cordially invited to my studio here in Flower Mound, Texas, (where you can meet the famous studio director AnnieBee) or I'd be delighted to bring a whole group of new paintings directly to you so you can see them in your home! Contact me to set a date! This is what's blooming in the gardens this week. Put on your comfy shoes, grab your sketch pad and camera, and let's tiptoe through the tulips. We'll take a break early for high tea in the Tea Room, and end the day with something yummy at the snack bar. Disclaimer: I'll be stopping every six inches to take several gazillion photos, I hope that won't be a problem or anything. Purple Iris and Hydrangeas
16X12
A New Two-Day Flower Painting Workshop
These purple irises were cut from my garden this week, and gave their all for the spotlight, lasting exactly an hour before giving up the iris ghost. They seemed like a gift from nature to help me celebrate my newfound freedom, but I did manage to sprinkle in a few hydrangeas since I'm on a hydrangea kick this month. I've had several students request a hydrangea workshop, so I'm dedicating at least one day of my new 2-day workshop in North Texas to painting hydrangeas, May 17-18, at the Jaycee Parks Center for the Arts. We'll use big strokes to make bold, bright florals you are sure to enjoy for years to come. Put a little joy in your brush and join me! Read more about my new hydrangea workshop here... |
Silent Serendipity White Poppies
Silent Serendipity - First Place Winner Mid-Cities Fine Arts Annual Show
16X20 Oil on Linen Silent Serendipity is an award winning painting of white poppies, and is a reflection of the first breath of spring in Flower Mound Studio. I could see this as a terrible time, with my Mother in hospice. Instead, I am celebrating every moment I can spend with her. Sometimes life gets so busy and noisy I forget there is another way of seeing. This is the beginning of a new chapter in my life, and I am so thankful for the friends and family who have joined me on this journey. |
Winter Poppy Garden
24X36
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas The Poppy Flower Winter Warming Effect
When it was absolutely chilliest this winter in Dallas (yes, okay, well that's about 40 degrees usually), I had the overwhelming urge to paint red poppies. One of my collectors has a few of my poppy paintings, and shared this photo of the bedroom from her new home. You can see my paintings beautifully arranged around the headboard. This is my dream bedroom! I even recognized the name of the Pottery Barn bedspread without having to look it up. That's how you know you've shopped at Pottery Barn just a little too much! A sigh inducing, nap enticing bedroom! Ahhh! |

Meet the new boss, AnnieBee! Reason No. 3 to Retire Early More time to hug the pugs! This is Studio Director AnnieBee's happy face. She is still processing the big news that she'll be supervising me 24-7, instead of just weeknights and weekends. I anticipate demands for increases in kibble rations shall soon be forthcoming.
